Many thanks for that. Intrigued so I started looking further. Christina Hole wrote a good many books on Folklore, superstition etc over a period from 1940 to 2011. Here's a list of all her books; www.goodreads.com/author/list/354772.Christina_HoleDo we have any reason to believe that the book Ian read had just been published or could it have been from an earlier period? I'll see what link I can find with her books and Jack in the Green lyrics. I thought I read somewhere, maybe the 40th anniversary of Songs that it was the Reader's Digest book, "Folklore Myths & Legends Of Britain".

Ouch! The cheapest I can find the 40th Anniversary - The Country Set edition is £240 I may just have to hope that there's a 50th Anniversary edition . . . unless anyone can persuade me that £240 is an absolute steal and well worth selling a kidney for

One kidney is plenty for an otherwise healthy Tull fan and 'Old Aces' is worth the redundant extra one. Be vigilant about a clean operating room. It would be a tragedy to lose a Tull fan of your enthusiasm and intelligence to sepsis.

Actually, I might risk sepsis, but for that amount of money I'd want Ian to deliver it on a silver platter dressed in the full SFTW garb. Now THAT would be worth it 😁 Have a word, will you, steelmonkey? 😉

HOW much??? 😱 Crikey, if I had that much money to spare I'd be paying my friends in low places to take the whole group hostage at their next concert and force them play a live performance only for me Play, my pretties, play! Hmmm, I'm not sure this forum is really presenting me in the most rational light . . .

I paid £30 for it....... Please be aware that ebay is full of cheating people who bid on behalf of their friends.....to bid the price up, they do not want the product and do not have to buy........if they win, so do not put in a big final bid........you will win I know this for a FACT.........

Oh my word! Ian wasn't wrong when he wrote: Let me bring you songs from the wood to make you feel much better than you could know. I am both honoured and humbled by your very generous offer. If you are absolutely sure, and I'm not twisting your right arm in the dark, I would give two or three bars (at least!) of chocolate for the set (plus P&P) - that is so kind of you to pass (on) the wit of ancient wisdom I'm afraid I took my eye off the ball regarding what JT were up to behind the scenes so missed this release. I won't be so tardy for the Broadsword one. You, sir (I am presuming!) are a gentleman and a shining star in the Tull community and I salute you!

Sorry for being rude and calling anyone a fool, but be very careful with the auction part of ebay.....yes there are decent people dealing there, I got a lovely box set of the 20 years cd at a nice price from a genuine guy, but I think that was lucky...a lot of sellers there are fake and still have 100% showing on their profile, it is an easy place to be a scammer.........also do not show that you are "watching" an item...they can see that. Only go live at the time it is due to end and wait..........bang!

Ring Out, Solstice Bells - Jethro Tull (1977) 96KHz/24bit HD FLAC Audio4,294 viewsDec 23, 2018 MetalGuruMessiah says: "Ring Out, Solstice Bells" was released on Jethro Tull's tenth studio album, Songs From The Wood, in February of 1977. A video update featuring 96KHz/24bit HD FLAC Audio! Merry Christmas to all my Youtube friends and fans! Ring out your solstice bells! ;-)*** ***This is an update of my December 2016 video for the song that I made a few months before the Songs From The Wood (The Country Set) box (featuring the wholly stunning remaster/remixes from Steven Wilson) was released in May 2017....the HD audio is sourced from this set. Comparing the audio coming back from Youtube on the earlier version (itself featuring the 44.1 KHz/16bit 1998 MFSL Remaster) and this one, I can't help but notice the difference is nowhere near as obvious as it is when I play both through my Oppo 205 + Rotel 1590 + B&W CM10 S2 home audio rig. So minor in fact, that I almost didn't bother to upload, but decided to go ahead since there are still many questions regarding how Youtube is processing audio.....and also because, even if it's not coming back full res currently, there is no reason to doubt that one day it will playback in the full, glorious high-resolution audio that it was uploaded with. We got time?! ;-) I found this nice old video of Georges Méliès' The Christmas Dream (aka Le rêve de Noël) (1900) which I though would be perfect for a video for this tune. I gave the video a sepia tint (to give it a more mellow feel), enhanced the snow effects, stretched it for widescreen, and cleaned it up a bit. I couldn't stop laughing at the wardrobe malfunction that results in a huge shoe right in the middle of all the dancing (you can sense the dancers trip hazard worry!)...no one knows what to do...the actor who lost is very focused on how to recover it...he makes his move, recovers the huge shoe....and deposits an even larger obstacle on the stage as a second malfunction befalls him and he loses his hat! :-) I wondered why Méliès' wouldn't have re-shot to correct (it wasn't after all a minor glitch...that shoe needed a screen credit!). The video is a really beautiful look at what Christmas looked like in 1900. Filled with imagery from medieval Britain (especially in the "Jack-in-the-Green", "Cup of Wonder", and "Ring Out Solstice Bells" lyrics), and ornamental folk arrangement (as in "Velvet Green" and "Fire at Midnight"), or the experimentalism of "Pibroch (Cap in Hand)" where Martin Barre's guitar simulates bagpipes, the album is a departure from the hard rock of earlier Jethro Tull material, though it still retained some of the band's older sound. The album highlights the band at its most playful and due to its lush production and more noticeable use of keyboards is perhaps one of the band's most obviously progressive rock oriented releases. The descriptive term "folk music" has been dismissed by Anderson and Barre as not relevant to the album. Folk has a strong connotation of American singer-songwriters performing activist songs in coffeehouses, whereas Songs from the Wood was composed and performed as a tribute to the UK. Anderson said that the album was "for all the band members... a reaffirmation of our Britishness." The album signaled a new direction for the band, who turned to celebrating British pagan folklore and the countryside life in a wide-ranging folk rock style which combined traditional instruments and melodies with hard rock drums and electric guitars. The album is considered to be the first of a trio of folk rock albums: Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses (1978) and Stormwatch (1979). On the album cover appears an extended title line: "Jethro Tull – with kitchen prose, gutter rhymes and divers – Songs from the Wood". The title track of the album contain two of these phrases in its lyrics. The UK music-paper adverts read: "Jethro Tull present 'Songs From The Wood'. A new album of Old Magic. Songs From The Wood. It's inspired by the thought that perhaps nature isn't as gentle as we'd like to believe. And it takes as its theme the natural and supernatural inhabitants of the woodlands of old England. Warm and friendly, harsh and bitter by turns, it includes 'Ring Out Solstice Bells' as well as Tull's new single 'The Whistler' and seven other songs. Find a quiet spot and listen to it soon." [Lyrics] Now is the solstice of the year. Winter is the glad song that you hear. Seven maids move in seven time. Have the lads up ready in a line. Ring out these bells. Ring out, ring solstice bells. Ring solstice bells. Join together 'neath the mistletoe, By the holy oak whereon it grows. Seven druids dance in seven time. Sing the song the bells call, loudly chiming. Ring out these bells. Ring out, ring solstice bells. Ring solstice bells. Praise be to the distant sister sun, Joyful as the silver planets run. Seven maids move in seven time. Sing the song the bells call, loudly chiming. Ring out these bells. Ring out, ring solstice bells. Ring solstice bells. Ring on, ring out. Ring on, ring out.

Songs From The Wood is my all time favourite Jethro Tull album, closely followed by Thick As A Brick! One can almost smell the fresh scent of newly mown hay emanating from the speakers as these songs unfurl to the wind. When an album such as this keeps its mystery throughout your entire life, you know there is a magical quality to it.
