The SFTW remix project, with this new show on video will be probably the best of the series. Amazing that nobody knew about this show being multitrack and filmed for 40 years.

An excellent post from Dave (showtaper) at the Steve Hoffman forum sheds more light into what can we expect with SFTW. Just saw this quick update from Erin Ward (TullTapes) from the Jethro Tull Group facebook page about the WOR Special footage: While we can't talk details about any possible bonus material for the "Songs From The Wood Anniversary Edition" we did stumble upon something else pretty interesting. This coming Feb 8th will be 40 years since Channel 9 WOR in New York aired the documentary "Minstrels in the Gallery" featuring some nice segments of Tull live, recorded throughout New York on the "Songs from The Wood" tour. A badly washed out copy has been traded by fans for decades and the quality leaves much to be desired. I had long searched and inquired to various people on the whereabouts of the raw films assuming a full show may have been sitting around somewhere? Several months ago a former WOR producer contacted me and was kindly able to fill me in on some details of the filming. They shot at 3 separate concerts using 3/4" tape (dubbed down to 2") but were only able to shoot one entire concert which they used as the master shot. This was from THE BROOME COUNTY VETERANS MEMORIAL ARENA in BINGHAMTON, NY on Dec 3, 1977.(a show my family and many friends were at). Being able to only shoot one full concert and wanting to use different angles, they picked certain songs and shot one at each venue. All the cutaways were from The Nassau Coliseum, and Madison Square Garden shows. Of course Tull's choreography was so exact that you couldn't tell in the edited version that it all wasn't shot in the same place at the same time. Q: So where's the raw tapes? Including the entire Binghampton show, full songs from Madison Square Garden, and Nassau Coliseum shows, soundchecks, interviews, parking lot footage etc? A: Channel 9 went through 3 or 4 owners and a move from Midtown Manhattan to Secaucus, New Jersey and all the 2" videotape ended up in a dumpster. :0 Q: How about A soundboard or multitrack audio recording? A: They were originally going to let us plug into their board but then someone decided that they didn't want us to bootleg an album so we had to set up a few mics in front of speakers. [IMG] He did manage to salvage and pass along to us his own 40yr old VHS master copy of the 30min show. See the clip below. He believes this is "all that exists" and has entrusted it to the Jethro tull group for possible usage. We will hopefully be able to make this available to the Tull fans here soon. We are working on it. The bootleggers make it very difficult. In the meantime something else might come along before too long?

Ian brought velvet green back for a show or two like 6 years ago or something. I remember hearing an audience recording of this a long time ago. Does anyone have a copy?

Here it is, for your pleasure:
JETHRO TULL - SONGS FROM THE WOOD 40th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Jethro Tull's tenth studio album set for deluxe reissue by Parlophone Records on May 19th 2017 3 CD, 2 DVD and 96 page book deluxe package Including the original album remixed by Steven Wilson A host of unreleased associated recordings and live tracks DVD components featuring a live concert, HD audio and 5.1 mixes Jethro Tull's tenth album was insipired by Ian Anderson's departure to a more rural envrionment in a transition which bore clear influence on the writing and recording process, with the band notably doffing a cap to British folklore and countryside.
Songs From The Wood is often referred to as one of the most commercially appealing Jethro Tull albums, containing elements of rock, prog and folk-rock. Although media reaction at the time divided opinion, the album has certainly developed a nostalgic rapport with fans through the years and itis perceived today as one of the band's most popular albums. Drummer Barrie Barlow comments that it sounds "Fresh, unique, great textures, interesting and dynamic!", while Martin Barre remembers that "it was a very tight band, one of the strongest line-ups Tull ever had... I think Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses [the follow up album] as a pair of albums are near the top of the tree"
The first disc of the set contains the Steven Wilson remix of the original studio album, accompanied by associated recordings. This includes the tracks "Old Aces Die Hard" and "Working John, Working Joe" which are being released here for the first time on any format. "Old Aces Die Hard", a title Ian Anderson recently gave the track in a subtle nod to Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister, is, according to Ian "an extraordinary find, because it's a long piece, and quite evolved, and one that sounds like it is pretty much complete - it doesn't sound as if it was waiting for me or anyone else in the band to go back and redo vocals or guitars or whatever".
CDs 2 and 3 in the box form 22 track live tracks, recorded on the Songs from the Wood Tour across two dates, Boston Garden, Boston, Massachusetts, USA on 6th December 1977 and Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland, USA on 21st November 1977. These tracks have been reconstructed as a complete set and then remixed to stereo by Jakko Jakszyk and are completely unheard.
DVD 1 contains 5.1 DTS, AC3 Dolby Digital Stere Surround and 96/24 LPCM stereo versions of the original Steven Wilson remixed album along with selected associated tracks, as well as various quad mixes and flat transfers.
The final disc in the package is the video footage taken live at the Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland on 21st November 1977 mixed to 16/48 stereo LPCM and 5.1 DTS, AC3 Dolby Digital surround by Jakko Jakszyk. This footage has never been publicly seen before. The concert venue was the home for Washington Wizards basketball team, then known as Washington Bullets - so the video footage comes directly from the film that was played to the big screens in teh venue during the show and has since been seen nowhere else.
Completing the set is a beautiful 96 page book which contains extensive writing on the history of the album and how it came to be. Martin Webb reflects on the writing, recording and touring of the album whilst Ian Anderson gives a track by track annotation of the album and associated recordings. Alongside lyrics, there's an interview with assistant engineer Trevor White, relevant photos and imagery and a full recording and touring chronology.
Vinyl, digital, and breakout standalone CD versions of the Steven Wilson remix will follow in July.

Great! Any information if 15. One Brown Mouse (Early Version)and 16. Strip Cartoon are different ( maybe more developed) version than the ones which apperead onto the TOTRNRTYTD 40th edition? Seems strange that they decided to include them here for the second time just because of the folky sound since they were recorded in the period of the previous album recording sessions...

I didn't realise Working John, Working Joe came from the SFtW sessions. Guessing it'll sound quite a bit different to the A version! As for One Brown Mouse: so we have the "draft" verion on TOTR&R, the multitrack version on SFtW, and then get the "final" version on HH ..... Any chance another version will crop up for Stormwatch? Anyway, it does look a great package

Yes - it definitely looks the business!
I'm not usually a fan of re-releases/best ofs etc, but I shall be saving my pennies for this one...
SFTW was the album that started me on my Tull journey - I can't quite believe that it's been 40 years!

Just ordered it. Pity there's only one unheard studio track. So you think they found tapes to Too old and added them in? I was hoping a finished version of advertising man and other tracks from 76 might be found in the 77 box
