In common?
They are me 3 fav songwriters/musicians
and, especially:
In the 80's each one put out a synth-based album with drum machines, etc. that were GREAT b/c they are all great musicians, and tried something different, even tho their so-called "fans" did not dig them.
Neil Young- "TRANS" (1982)
Jack Bruce-"AUTOMATIC" (1983)
and, of course,
Ian Anderson- "WALK INTO LIGHT"!- (1983)

I'm not familiar with the Neil Young or Jack Bruce albums but IMO, although in some respects sound wise WIL to a lesser extent Under Wraps sound a little dated now I think they both have some excellent material on them. Although as you said they got a pretty mixed reaction at the time, I think Tull's early 80's brief dabble in electronica was in hindsight very successful and Tull were one of the few bands of the 70's who made a convincing job of incorporating all the new technology that became available at the time. In fact Under Wraps is quite high up in my list of most listened to Tull albums.

Was trying to think of a connection between IA, Jack Bruce and Neil Young but all I came up with was that IA played alongside Jack Bruce on a live Mandoki album on House oF The Rising Sun but can't figure out a link connecting IA and Neil Young. Mind you I have just got up from a day in bed after a long night shift so my few remaining brain cells haven't yet dropped into position.

Ian and Neil are both career long mavericks who don't cater to popular, mainstream bull$h1t, they say what they think without prissy filtering and experiment with styles and genres in an often surprising way. When Cobain died and a few words from hey hey my my were in his suicide note, neil said he would retire the song forever...then played it first the next gig he had. Real men change their minds! I think my Mt Rushmore...and I'll limit it to the correct 4 heads so I don't go on forever, would have ian, neil, Garcia and Lou Reed....think how much each of them would have hated to be stuck in a room with the other 3! (well, jerry wouldn't mind).

(well, jerry wouldn't mind). gotta disagree with you on this one in all cases but maybe Lou Reed, in that, to my knowledge Jerry and Neil were quite good friends, and I will bet Ian and Jerry would have at the very least a profound mutual respect, and a knowledge of so many non musical subjects, plus knowing what it is to be idolized by a generation that occasionally would apply god like status to them, not many people have lived with that weirdness. I am of the opinion that Lou Reed is just an arrogant man, and no where near the talent of the other 3 mentioned. Miles Davis was sometimes, and usually incorrectly noted as being arrogant, but had ten times the cache to be arrogant as Lou Reed. I nominate Miles Davis to be the fourth in this quartet, and I bet those guys love each other, I know Miles Davis had very kind things to say about the Grateful Dead, much less so another rock band he opened for, Steve Miller. I believe his precise words were "he's a no talent mother******"

Mile's quotes would be a great thread unto themselves...I agree with many of them, including his assessment of Miller. Miles got stuck ina limo with barbara Bush after a kennedy center award. she says to him:' I bet your mammy would be proud' Miles says: 'my mother was the first black dentist in Maryland...no one EVER called her mammy' he added that he was tempted to die by secret service bullets with his hands tightening on her throat! The german review of Mile's autobiography was fasinated by the fact that MF could be used as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, gerund, and every other part of english speech in Mile's usage..often in one paragraph!
