Any word on the anticipated forthcoming updated Benefit box set in book form, later this year? Only that there will be a surprise or two. Initial guess would be longer audio performance of the Chicago set but it looks as though the set list on the Chicago bootleg is all there was/is. So we'll have to wait and see but then I do like surprises.

Hi All - I am new to the forum but not to Jethro Tull and have been a fan since I was introduced by aunts and uncles as a kid.
I will start by saying Benefit is my favorite Tull album. It's moody and drifts in like a dream. My real love for the album blossomed while I was renovating a 200 year old house some 15 plus years ago. It was autumn and I often had Tuesdays off from work. I would set up to work, make a pot of coffee or tea and crank Benefit. The dreaminess of those rainy upstate New York autumn days; Benefit was the perfect soundtrack.
I was unaware of the upcoming expanded box set/book package: I will snatch that up immediately! Forgive my coming in out of nowhere on this, but this time of year is especially a 'Jethro Tull' time of year as our Scottish Games draw upon us and Tull goes perfectly with all. In short, thanks to all who posted - I will read through this thread with relish!
Slainte!

Benefit is one of my top 5 or even 3 JT albums and I am anxiously waiting for the box set to be revealed. Actually they should now really hurry to announce it before I spend my limited budget on box sets by Rory Gallagher, Rolling Stones, Doors to say the least.

Has anyone here inside information on the release of the Benefit box set? It's taking quite a long time to anounce and everything is very quiet. We don't even have David Rees saying anything on the AND magazine. Perhaps, if anyone here frequents the private JT group on facebook...

Up until now it's only been revamped as a cd size release but the soon to be released issue should have some extras, even some audio stuff to boot

www.loudersound.com/news/jethro-tull-announce-50th-anniversary-edition-of-benefitJethro Tull announce 50th Anniversary Edition of BenefitBy Jerry Ewing ( Prog ) 26 minutes ago Four-disc and two DVD box set pf Jethro Tull's third album Benefit released in November Jethro Tull have announced they will release a new four disc, two DVD 50th Anniversary edition of their 1970 album Benefit, through PLG UK catalog on November 5. Benefit, the bands third album, was one of only a handful of Tull releases that didn't receive a new 40th anniversary edition. The album featured Ian Anderson (flute, guitars, vocals), Martin Barre (guitars), Glenn Cornick (bass) and Clive Bunker (drums) who were joined by John Evan on piano and organ, who would go on to play on all of Jethro Tull’s albums throughout the 70s. Highlights of Benefit (The 50th Anniversary Enhanced Edition) include: * Original album and associated recordings remixed by Steven Wilson * Additional associated recordings including mono and stereo mixes of various A and B sides * The 1970 Fillmore at Tanglewood concert, with new stereo remix by Steven Wilson * Live At The Aragon Ballroom, Chicago 1970 concert in mono * Steven Wilson’s 2013 remix of the album, 5 extra tracks in DTS and Dolby 5.1 surround and stereo 96/24 LPCM * Flat transfers of the original UK+US LP master in LPCM * Additional tracks Sweet Dream, 17 and The Witch’s Promise * The 1970 Fillmore at Tanglewood concert on video with Steven Wilson’s 2020 audio remix in stereo and 5.1 surround. Benefit (The 50th Anniversary Enhanced Edition) contains a copious amount of expanded material, building upon the 2013 Steven Wilson remixes. CD3 contains a previously unreleased Steven Wilson remix of Jethro Tull performing at Tanglewood in 1970, while DVD2 has the previously unavailable film footage of that show. Further to that, CD4 contains a newly remastered mono version of a previously unreleased concert at The Aragon Ballroom in 1970. The 100-page book, enclosed within the elegant, hardback book packaging, contains an essay from Martin Webb, who expands upon the 2013 A Collector’s Edition booklet notes. Following that are comments on each of the album’s tracks from, Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Glenn Cornick and Clive Bunker, as well as interviews with Robin Black (studio engineer of Benefit and many other Jethro Tull albums), Terry Ellis (‘executive producer’ of Benefit), Joshua White who directed the 1970 Tanglewood Festival which features on DVD2, and Steven Wilson explaining the mixing of Benefit in 2013. The masses of anecdotes are surrounded by legions of images of the band and memorabilia from the era. They seem to be getting bigger and bigger lol. I’m just getting it to match the rest of the set Ill probably give this one a miss. I never really liked "Benefit" it seemed one paced and gloomy. Hated the cover too, and only really liked a couple of songs so Id be getting it to sit largely un played on the shelf. I didn't discover the band till around 72/3 , so pre Barlow , I was discovering the albums retrospectively. I love "Stand Up" and "Aqualung", from the Bunker years but those two classics have more depth and variety than "Benefit".

This is great news. I’m in! Duly ordered. I’ve steered clear of the Tanglewood and Aragon gigs on bootlegs in the past, so it’ll be good to hear these live gigs spruced up to best advantage.
Only one quibble: I’m assuming the original master tapes for The Witches Promise are *still* missing? The only studio track from this era of Tull to not get mixed to new stereo or 5.1. It must be truly AWOL…

Hopefully Wilson really cleans up most of the tracks and improves the production. The listening experience could improve alot. Especially the outtakes. Can’t wait
