FACTSWiki en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benefit_(album)Tull website www.j-tull.com/discography/benefit/index.htmlInterview featured on Tullpress www.tullpress.com/nme11apr70.htmTHE album where Ian found his calling where Martin played with confidence and panache and as stated by many - Glenn and John's finest offerings. and the album that sealed the deal for me - the main course after the enticing starters. The dull album cover you can forgive for the songs and the lyrics speak greatly for themselves. The Benefit tour included the Isle of Wight Festival on 30th August 1970 East Afton Farm, Godshill Isle Of Wight, UK Isle Of Wight or By A Benefit Of Wight Day five of the Isle Of Wight Festival. Playing on this day (in this order?): Good News, Kris Kristofferson, Ralph McTell, Heaven, Free, Donovan, Pentangle, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, Richie Havens, Hawkwind. Tull set released officially in 2004, in an edited form. Great album, a must. #11 US album chart. "The dull album cover you can forgive" Who wrote/believes this? DULL? ? Cool cover. Might be more suitable to Stand Up.

I bought Aqualung/Stand Up and then Benefit so compared to the first two I thought the album cover was boring.

Benefit is pure gold. As a less than confident, well-adjusted teen, I'd lsiten to 'with you there to help me' at least once a day to stave off self-pity...it worked.

As a completely off the rails teenager I would rock back and forwards to "Cry You a Song" on a daily basis. I'll tell you the lyrics I heard....... sometime

With nearly all of my Tull curiosities long since answered via A New Day specifically, and the net in the past 15 years or so, plus all the stuff that has been released that had not been for decades, were I to wish for one thing, and a very low level wish it would be, is for filmed evidence of the recording of that laughter at the beginning of WYTTHM. I'm guessing it was Ian, so like the notion of him heading for the recording booth, engineer saying ready, and...actually doing it. This was also of appeal to me in middle period Pink Floyd recordings where someone, Roger Waters I guess, would go in that little booth and lay down whatever, "I know I'm mad I've always been mad." Also someone please remind me next time there is an available Q and A with IA, I am always of the opinion that anything I wanted to know, re where's Jeffrey these days, has long since been answered. However, I am curious to know what methodology he used to quit smoking, as he had quite a serious habit. I am hoping/surmising that he quit thru sheer will, but I am curious, having failed myself thru several attempts with other methods, all of them work, but still leave the individual at the end.

Probably nicotine patches, or a stern talking to by Shona?

I seem to have spent my adult life moving from one addiction to the other - nothing major or immediately life threatening my theory is that it starts with too much sugar given as a child and then addiction kicks in and then we replace it with something else. I stopped smoking fifteen years ago I stopped drinking about five years ago - just didn't like the taste or affect anymore and hey presto now I'm back to the sweets and cakes.

Apparently it was Terry Ellis and Ruan O'Lochlainn who designed the album cover.

Back when Benefit first came out.... There was this lass I fancied - older than me - she finally (to my delight) invited me to her room. There she played this impressionable, eager and very hormonal teenager her latest LP aquisition - Benefit. I can't remember the 'affair' - I can't remember her name! But I pretty much went, soon as possible and bought my first Tull... Benefit! And then 'Stand up' and then 'Aqualung' and then..... Passionately hooked for life.
'Woman, you were too old for me-hee...' Aint Tull music grand!

Had a thought which seems to have been overlooked.. Steven Wilson presents remastered rejigged Benefit - especially With You There To Help Me - can you imagine the hauntingly beautiful sounds of that song highlighted

There has always been a bit of hiss at the start of 'With You There To Help Me' just before the squeal and then wistful/soft flute starts - not that it bothers me, but I'm sure Steven Wilson could take a lot of that out. Would be interesting to hear what he might do with IA's fifth harmonies too. Also, there is a lot of really nice strumming on 'Benefit' - in terms of Anderson's guitar playing he was just on the cusp of taking his acoustic playing to a new level. I've always really enjoyed 'Nothing To Say'. 'Son' could benefit with a bit more beefing up perhaps? I'd love to hear what SW might do with 'Sossity, You're A Woman' - as it is though I think that one is excellent anyway. The guitars sound really crisp on that track. I wonder if there were any out-takes or alternate takes during the 'Benefit' sessions or even better, an unreleased or half-finished song that we know nothing about...?

Ohh that sounds so enticing - I'd even go to night classes for sound mixing/producing and do it myself - what price the result??

Just relistened to my remastered CD version of Benefit, specifically to check out 'Alive & Well' after it got recent mentions on another thread. Jings! I don't remember the tambourine being THAT prominent before? (when the chorus comes in) Must did out the vinyl (when I get well and am able) and see what the original sounded like. And I wonder why this hasn't bothered me (on the CD) since I bought it, as much as it does now?

Play In Time always irritated me and I would skip it. Despite the clever song title and depending what way you think that the guitar was either clever or overdubbed - I didn't like the song.
I think it might have been what Tullist was talking about the other day elsewhere - if I may quote R; ".. the closest Tull came to psychedelia.."
I think the vocals didn't fit the song.
I couldn't find many covers of the song on youtube however Cold Flame despite the bad quality on this video do a good cover here especially vocally.

Play in Time is one of my favourite Tull songs. No doubt Martin can do on his tour a million things that can't be done on one more pathetic tour that plays songs like that F-ing Bourree. My feelings parallel another thread that mentioned clear joy at the idea of Tull ending, in the interests of sparing the audience from bad music.
Ian can adjust to his limitations and continue all he wants, but there are elements in the Tull live show over the last decade that I really find repulsive. The standard "best of" approach has always pissed me off. No wonder the recent additions to the Tull line-up seem to have nothing sparky to add; there's no new music and everyone has their images of how the classic hits of the early years have to be played. When Andrew Giddings said he had played all the "jobbing" roles in music before joining Tull, I, and no doubt he, expected Tull to be a creative venture. It hasn't been, now, for a long time.
Looks like the musicians, will, out of self-respect, Play In Time.

A beautiful video and a complete contrast to what I posted earlier ;D ;D however I don't find it really appropriate to the song. A couple of the lines might be but ...
"Going back to the ones that I know with whom I can be what I want to be"
Ellis Island was hope and the start of a new and better life.
