Playing this album now. Great stuff. I always loved the album artwork on this one as well. You can order the painting that the cover is based off of. About 20 years ago, I had it hung above our sofa, but the wife kept scoffing at it. So, I gave it away. But, I'm considering fooling with the wife and ordering another one, only bigger. :-) "Twelfth Night Revels in the Great Hall, Haddon Hall, Architecture of the Middle Ages, 1838" by Joseph Nash. And, staring up at the painting, while cranking Minstrel adds something tangible to the listening experience. It may or may not be from this time, these people, and this place that these songs are born, and though it is not necessary to know about this time in human history to enjoy the music, it does lend a certain understanding for those who care to think about such things. And nowadays, past it's former glories

Bring back everyone who is...alive and well and living in, and play one last show at Haddon Hall. The setlist, of course would be chosen by the fans. The final encore would be Cold Wind to ValhallllllLAAA.

One particular item grabbed my attention, "Halloumi, Pepper & Pumpkin Wrap £9.95 Breaded and deep fried halloumi served in a pumpkin wrap with peppers, onions, beetroot, lettuce and sweet chilli sauce. Served with Haddon slaw, salad and potato wedges. Haddon Hall: 900 years of polarizing the pumpkin eaters.

Always enjoyed the atmospheric banqueting hall (smaller than you might think by the way) without realising that it was THE Gallery from the iconic cover. Only when the boxed set came out did I learn its significance. By then I lived miles away and havent had chance to return !

But, I imagine the interesting events that took place there hundreds of years ago. The room reminds me, for some odd reason, of the short poem, The Haunted Palace, that is embedded in The Fall of The House of Usher.

The thing is, for those of us that value these Tull connections, to actually track down an iconic album cover is exciting ( like for those many people to whom the "Abbey Road" Beatles crossing matters, or the street from "Ziggy Stardust" for example). Its just so ironic and quite funny really that the "Minstrel" cover was under my nose all the time. Even funnier, a friend of mine ,who is a rock fan, but by no means a Tull fanatic has always held up "Minstrel" as his favourite Tull. He lives within walking distance of that very Gallery, and sends me pics from time to time to tease! I need to go back don't I?

I am very surprised that you didn't walk through that gallery, walk out the door, stop with a puzzled look on your face, walk back in the room and go, "Hmmm!". The image that comes to mind is of Jonathan Winters in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World when he runs underneath the giant W, stops, pauses and gets a puzzled look on his face.

Of course I visited often long before the album came out so for a long time there was no connection to make. Also its not unusual for similar halls to have a Minstrel gallery, so until I knew different ,that cover illustration could have been anywhere, or indeed made up.. A pity the album didnt credit the original artwork at the time!

A pity the album didnt credit the original artwork at the time! One day, about twenty years ago, I was looking for something to hang in the parlor. I actually wanted to have a very large print of the Minstrel cover, so I looked it up. That's how I found the original painting it was based off of. Of course, I ordered one. After I had it framed and hung it, my wife came home from work, saw it, sighed to herself, and mumbled in her Irish lilt something like, "Jethro Tull, Jethro Tull, morning, noon, and night with Jethro Tull, mumble, mumble, mumble." I giggled. The painting lasted several years until I agreed to take it down. I think it's time for another one. Or perhaps, a painting of a white duck.

A pity the album didnt credit the original artwork at the time! Perhaps, they didn't credit it on purpose, for fear of it being overrun with crazed fans spilling pints of bitter all over the floor.
