My copy of the four page German "programme/newspaper" for the Out In The Green festival in Giessen, July 1988. It was certainly a "fun" weekend. Memories of the event include the fact that it p1ssed down with rain, Tull did a great set and Carol Decker of T'Pau swore at the crowd when they wouldn't listen to her music which made it even worse. Oh and the A New Day away team in a rather minging/rancid camper van, who offered us tea and biscuits and then wondered why we stayed outside in the pouring rain. Well wouldn't you if the camper van was meant to hold four people and they'd somehow squeezed in six or seven.

One for the "locked box" of Tull memorabilia. Issue #20 of "Classic Rock Presents Prog". Interview with Don Airy, members of Yes, a "round table" of Ian Anderson, Steve Hackett, Mark Kelly, Ray Shulman and Roine Stolt discussing prog rock. A cover mounted CD including Locomotive Breath (remix) and a booklet advertising a 2CD various artist's release called "Prog Rocks". And all for a pittance of £7.99p.

Thank you for that and I will hot foot it to my local prog newsagent Thought you would ...and back.... last copy would you believe well just skimmed through it love the art love the young uns and their prog - a couple of comments; "When punk arrived there was a lot of showbiz about prog. We disappeared up our own arses!"
Ian Anderson "Did you used to be in Hawkwind?" he kept saying. "No " I kept going "Course your gonna say that. If your in Hawkwind your gonna say you weren't".. In the end I just went "Yeah, okay"
Turns out I was in Hawkwind for many years!"

Didn't know Lemmy got sacked from Hawkwind. Can just see that conversation; "Eh Lemmy me an the boys had a chat and don't take this the wrong way - it's not the drugs, the daily container truck of Jack Daniels or even the nazi duvet cover but ffs trying it on with Dave the roadies' Mrs ??"

I travelled up for this gig with a few family Tull Heads. We managed to get 4 complimentary tickets. How? Well my cousin was working as a nanny for the actor Paul Nicolas. She mentioned to him that some family were coming up from Wales to seer Tull at Wembley. He had a contact ( Crysalis Records ) and got 4 cracking seats down front just left of centre. We sold the tickets in hand and had lots of beer and food! Happy Days. Onecomplimentaryduck

That was a very well written review Graham. While not a ringing endorsement of Tull, and I don't clearly recall what slant Sounds magazine had other than that I believe it was a somewhat strictly rock and roll one as opposed to the one I think called Q from over there, it may have been as close as a clever writer could come to intimating that he actually liked the show, while not losing his hipster credentials in the process. The reflexive negative review for Tull was only just starting to change in 88, not that they've every completely come back to pre 72 consideration. Now if you ever come by one, I believe from about the same period, may have been in Sounds, NME or Melody Maker more likely, my favorite negative review of Tull ever.A copy of it was in A New Day 20 to 25 years ago I think. I think it had a non flattering caricature of Ian and the reviewer I believe starting the review with, "That swivel eyed little turd. Is he still about then? I shall have to give him a good slagging ." It was the type of thing I will bet Ian would get a giggle out of. Swivel eyed little turd. You know, in a horrible way, I can see that.

Just to prove that we Brits can "push the boat out" when it comes to eyecatching posters, this is one from the aptly named Dacorum Pavilion in Hemel Hempstead in 1997 Sure beats the hell out of some of the American west coast artists - not

Ha! So I finally get to see this review! Must have been Dave Rees, had to have been, in one of the first 2 issues of A New Day who had made mention of this, but a little too late for me to get my hands on that issue. Kerrang was, maybe is, a heavy metal mag that I would otherwise have zero interest in. Most of us know who Chris Welch is, as close to a friend in terms of a reviewer as the band has, although most known for his less than sizzling endorsement of the live performance of Passion Play. Sorry...i tended to agree with him. Funny to see his being so impressed with Doane and Peter's solo spots, in real time, (saw that tour 4 times) I do not recall having a problem with it, but with the recordings I have of the tours in that time, I would mark those solo spots, coupled with the guy from Rainbow in 87, (hands down, and not including Tony Williams)the most ill fitting member of Tull ever, (with an asterisk for Tony Williams in those dumb ass riding boots I am sure Ian asked him to wear)as the most embarrassing moments in Tull history. Although magic can come out of any instrument I am aware of, to the extent I dislike any instrument, it would start with the whole battery of "inventions" coming to the fore in the early eighties, be they synthesized keyboards or drum sets. Give me Max Roach or Art Blakey or Charlie Watts at an actual drum kit everytime. Anyway Graham, great thanks for this share, had to have been the only positive review, at least of the album, which is why I had wanted to hunt down that magizine 29 fricking years ago. I notice in the time I have been keyboard jabbering, Remy Claus has been here. Anyone else find it quite unbelievable the non stop flow of tasty treats coming from our friend? Way to be Remy! My man!

I would have posted it earlier John but it's been lurking in a binder with other magazines which have to be pulled out from the spine of said binder. If I can get some more out without damaging the magazine itself I'll post a few more. Hats off to Remy for the "tasty treats" he's providing. Class act ;D

Kerrang, 7 October 1989 I don't reckon the reviewer liked Jethro Tull that much - discuss ;D

Thanks Graham, pretty damn good shot of Ian actually. And I'm not going to act like that was not well written and funny because it was. Right up there with "the swivel eyed little turd" accusation, I think from a punk zine though more likely NME or Melody Maker. I mean if you're going to make it hateful, pull out all the stops, I have to give the man credit. And those of us old enough to remember the Passion Play bashing that truly the band has never completely "recovered" from in terms of public perception. One would have to remember the perception of them prior to that record which means you are one old mf.
