Nobody (especially Ian Anderson) has ever held a flute like that, ruins the whole thing.

He has his left hand up near the emboucher, there are no keys there, in all your pics his left hand is on the keys, I cannot understand why the sculptor would make such an obvious mistake The only time he has held the flute there is when he is whirling it around (in the old days), and he would have it in his right hand for that...... Do any flautists on the forum agree... …..where is Ash when you need him...

With Ian Anderson as a performer he breaks many rules which is probably why he is still performing.
Regardless, the statue is an interpretation of how the flute can be an instrument used in many ways. I've always laughed at the more controversial use which some may think as inappropriate. Such is the case when he uses it as a symbol of sexual euphoria even though it may be offensive to some.

The only time you hold a flute there is if you are removing the headjoint from the body of the flute or tuning it . Having said that most annoying picture ever for me is Gazza playing the flute...Google it and you will see why!
