Every evening at the moment we're treated to watching hundreds of Starlings flying in formation called a murmuration so I decided to capture the event from my back garden last night.

Thanks John that's brilliant. Got me googling didn't even know it was called a murmuration. Usually see it here in Fermanagh only in early autumn but according to the RSPB they flock autumn through to winter. They flock to deter predators, find shelter and because they are such social birds to huddle together to keep warm and to exchange information as to the best feeding areas. They also mimic noises and are currently being tested to understand the origins of the human voice.
This is sad
Don't be fooled by big flocks
"Despite the incredible size of the flocks, these numbers are just a fraction of what they used to be. Huge starling flocks used to gather over Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast, but you have a much better chance of seeing the birds in rural areas.
The starling population has crashed by over 70% in recent years, meaning they are now on the critical list of UK birds most at risk.
The decline is believed to be due to the loss of permanent pasture, increased use of farm chemicals and a shortage of food and nesting sites in many parts of the UK."

Beautiful pictures! That cliff has seen a bit of erosion in the passing decades. On a side note, hurry up and win that lottery would ya!

I had one number last night so I was only five numbers short of the jackpot. If it increases by one number per week I'll be sorting that trip to Philly in five weeks.

That's a weird place John it reminds me a bit of the Lido in the Highlands where Tull played with Marillion - wild, rugged and a bit odd. Great pictures. Do it full time now that your retired *jealous smile*

If Tull or Marillion played there now I reckon the Kittywakes might drown out the acoustic numbers!

Maybe I'm thinking Hitchcock with all those birds Mind you is the only way down to via that lift? If so I wouldn't like to be stuck there all night.

Calling Graham, John or anyone What was the name or place of that concert in Scotland in the 80's that was in an out of the way place and an old Lido? We have a few posts on it and I was going to find them for Ron but I can't remember the name.

Well done Graham for finding this, we'll all sleep better now. I wonder if they ever restored it back to it's former glory?
