Hiya,
I'm working on putting together a "checklist," of sorts, to outline the ultimate Jethro Tull collection, but also sifting out duplicates and identical pressings, etc. Let me give you an idea of what I mean...
Let's say you wanted every album Tull's ever released, including different re-masterings, and even including both vinyl and CD (I'll skip tape-based formats), but wanted to only hit the important releases of each. I'll use Aqualung for one example of how the list I have in mind might look:
1971 US LP
1984 CD (which was, amazingly, made from vinyl masters!)
1994 CD Chrysalis 25th Anniversary (blue disc; reissue)
1996 CD Aqualung 25th Anniversary (remastered)
1997 DCC LP
1998 CD Chrysalis Remaster (17 tracks)
2003 CD Toshiba-EMI Remaster (17 tracks)
2006 CD Toshiba-EMI (11 tracks) (not sure if remastered)
That's probably where I'd stop. There are actually dozens and dozens of reissues and pressings, even remasters (not to mention versions from other countries), of just this album, enough to fill an entire long page by itself, but that set above pretty much covers each variation in the audio that I can ascertain. Well, ok, knowing me, I'd probably add-on the 2008 Caroline CD and the 2009 Classic Records LP just out of curiosity, but those wouldn't be critical.
Fortunately for my sanity most Tull albums don't go through so many variants as Aqualung did (I left off Aqualung Live, since that's its own separate "live" album), so lists like the above would typically only have about three entries (original LP, original CD, and remastered CD). Hmmm, maybe make that four entries. Almost forgot about the Japanese Mini-LP remasters for a sec. I've heard those sound better than most other releases (some even prefer them over MFSL and DCC stuff).
Ok, so now you've got the idea. The ultimate "abbreviated" collector's list, covering just the important stuff. I'm very curious how other people's lists would look. What would you include? What would you leave off, and why?
Some may find this a boring discussion, but if you're like me, this could be a rather enjoyable discussion.
Hope to see some interesting responses!
