That's a setlist I could live with when Tull come to California in the Fall. I knew it was too much to hope that Clasp and Black Sunday survive changes to allow more new songs.....

I still find myself planning to share some teeny information with him about Tull and beyond before i remember he is gone.

Reason For Waiting/Cornucopia definitely on the cousin's list. Sometimes the cousin vibe is so obvious ( fat man, tall thin girl, water carrier), (budapest/white innocence) that it reveals pre-meditation.

As is so often the case, close listenings after first impressions reveal songs with shared DNA to the rich catalogue, if not actual cousins:
Wolf Unchained- Hunt By Numbers and Turnpike Inn Perfect One-Lost in Crowds and a teeny bit of Change of Horses Trickster- Whistler, Sad Sisters Navigator-Jump Start, Engineer Hammer- Barren Beth

I was, at an awful venue but Kenny Wylie let me bring in a bunch of impoverished bike messenger at the last moment, for free, very cool.

I shuffled Rokflote, Zealot, Homo and Rupi the other day and found them compatible and logical together....TAAB 2 more in it's own space or maybe along with TAAB for me.

Current Rokflote summary from my corner: There are no bad songs. Each and every one rewarding from close listens.

I am so down with Ian on 'turn up the wick' while we can. Immortality till death.

My last post about the song, I promise: The title may have fooled me but I swear its not cuz i thought 'finally, Ian wrote a song about me' This song somehow, note by note, layer by layer forges a path to beating heart of Tull for me and, furthermore, has remined me how to listen to the other new songs and let them build and develop. Since size does matter, It will take its place among similar length jewels like Acres Wild and Velvet Green and European Legacy.

ZG sorted out into three tiers, maybe I can force that format on Rokflote;
Highest Tier: Perfect One, Navigators, Guardian, Feathers Tiny step below: Gigg, Ithavol, Trickster, Wolf. Hammer Sure to grow but not yet settled: Voluspo, Corn, Allfather
I'm sure I am missing something on Corncopia and will humbly admit same soon but at the same time wonder why only me and one reviewer that I read so far are so blown away by perfect one and wish it had been drawn out to budapest or beyond length. It is so damn TULL.

This album is growing on me fast. Current summary: 'Maybe I'm not done yet'. Every song has a musical adventure built in and lineages to older songs emerging as well as strong connections to each other and to ZG and HE.

Friends I used to subpoena to see Tull with me wonder why I no longer force them along...i tell them that Tull in 2023 if for dedicated Tull fans, not neutral observers. I don't discourage anyone from seeing Tull and getting a taste of what made them so unique and great but I also admit that we lifers have to fill in a lot for ourselves at this late date and live Tull is sort of a live documentary performance about Tull during which Tull concert moments do still emerge.

Giving the album a full thru listen raises the whole thing quite a bit. It's making more sense and the strength of the music is undeniable. I dunno why one track jumped out ahead for me ( The Perfect One) especially without lyrics and context....but doesn't that always happen? Going backwards, early favorites have included Mine is the Mountain, Enter the Uninvited, Change of Horses, Back Door Angels, Seal Driver, Big Dipper, etc etc etc. Comments above about the somewhat concrete rigidity about what Ian has decided to tell us about Norse mythology rings true with me. I prefer vaguer lyrics that allow self-interpretation, often from own life, like one can with songs like Under Wraps or Jump Start. Norse mythology just plain not high on my list of interests but I would listen to Tull/Ian singing the phone book. Anyway...it's new Tull, it will get many more listens and it will sink into my musical DNA with all the rest.

Wow 5 concerts in California. I am confirmed for two and might be tempted into a third either by chance to escort a Tull novice or if first concert (9-26) proves too good to ignore adding date option.

Very early impressions:
Strong Favorite: 7....almost puts the rest of the songs to shame! Don't like (yet?) 1 and 3 Meh: 6 and 9 Sounds like Tull to me: 2, 4, 5, 8, 10 and 11.
The album will get plenty of attention this weekend.

Now ticketed for two concerts: San Diego and Winery outside of SF where the good seats all go to people with the right rodney richpig credit cards or willingness to buy $300 crappy dinner at crappy winery restaurant. Oh well. I have a seat in the venue and for that I am grateful.

South Americans are SO ENLIGHTENED. Tull sells out huge venues. There was a bar in Argentina that, till deep into the nineties, ONLY PLAYED TULL.
