Beef Stroganof! 'Only Fools And Horses' or 'Monty Pythons Flygande Cirkus'? Difficult. Monty for the surrealism. Flute or guitar?

Interesting you should mention Rhiannon Giddens. I was lucky enough to work in the States in Savannah, Georgia in 2008/2009. There is a nice river waterfront there with all sorts of bars, restaurants, cafes, art shops, etc. When I first got to Savannah, I went in a shop there where the owner picked up on my Scots accent and started talking to me. He mentioned that he was involved in the local folk club and said they had a great group soon on called the Carolina Chocolate Drops. He recommended I come along. I intended to go but then forgot what night it was on and missed it. Regretted it ever since (Rhiannon Giddens was the singer in the band). A year or so back she was in concert at the Sage in Gateshead and I booked tickets to go along. We had a family problem and I missed seeing her again then too. Hopefully one day in the not too distant future I will get another opportunity, www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVIaiADsyYoThird time lucky stevep! I had so many plans this year to hear live music. I got tickets to see Yusuf/Cat Stevens at Kelvingrove Park and I was looking forward to Celtic Connection in January. The only consolation is that Celtic Connections is online so it's free, and reaching a wider audience. www.celticconnections.com/

There aren't many genres of music that Tull hasn't been associated with or influenced by over the years.
Puirt à beul (mouth music) is a traditional form of song native to Scotland, Ireland, and Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
It was used in the chorus in the beautiful song Coronach.
I'm listening to the wonderful Rhiannon Giddens - award winning, American musician singing a trad gaelic puirt a beu song.
“Nobody, but nobody, gets three standing ovations in Scotland”. Well, Rhiannon Giddens did just that, for a one-off night playing with an orchestra created just for the occasion at Celtic Connections."

10th November In 1917 41 suffragists are arrested in front of White House. It's been 103 years later for a woman to be elected as Vice President !!!! Absolutely and sad that it's taken so long.

Q: Ian, have you closed the book on Gerald? Ian Anderson: ''I really thought I had until about two weeks ago, and I woke up in the middle of the night with another thought. It’s certainly not THICK AS A BRICK 3, but I just thought maybe Gerald has a little life in him yet. I just kind of like the more or less weekly newsletters called THE BOSTOCK DIARIES which appear on our web site and on Facebook. … I rather like the rather cantankerous, failed politician and middle-aged, getting a bit kind of angry — I quite like the angry Gerald, so I actually think I might possibly have just another Gerald moment, but a very different one to this''. Gerald my friend, don't you start away uneasy You poor old sod, you see, it's only me..
Any thoughts? Can we soon expect TAAB3, about an angry old greaser Gerald? Personally, I think I've had enough of GB and I wouldn't be interested in TAAB3 - 1..2..far? I'd like something completely different.....(we've not had a Python video today)

I like to think about women in rock as "ladies", because that's what they are......don't get me wrong, I LOVE WOMEN in general, but I do not fall into the trap of considering sex as a tool for women to get into rock and be appreciated. If women are sexy AND talented (90% of all women in rock !!!!!), why not accept a LADY who sings, plays guitar and is SEXY to boot ? Olde world are men who still behave as male chauvinists when talking about the world of rock. I think your confusing 'sexy' with something else. "Ladies" as a Thread title sends out the wrong message for the Forum. Women in Rock - more appropriate. eige.europa.eu/publications/gender-sensitive-communication/challenges/subordination-and-trivialisation/patronising-language

The (Very) Secret Language of Birds
Fascinating video featuring bird sounds (and others) long since disappeared due to extinction. Beautiful and sad.
What did the Somerset Levels sound like in the Iron Age?
"It’s a soundscape that is lost to the modern ear. That abundance, the diversity of species, the absence of humanity’s thrum, cannot easily be recovered. Yet, using computers and historical records, ornithologist Joseph Monkhouse has given it his best shot."

My missing Bowie just increases and increases...the definition of 'ahead of his time' as I am just now catching up with his whole catalog. Blackstar as intense as first listen and overlooked gems like 'Outside' , Heathen, Reality and the classic berlin trilogy get more play via my headphones than ever. I was listening and thinking of Bowie too. I think I'll give this a miss as indeed will his family. Bowie asked that there be no films made about him. Anyone who sees it will be short-changed anyway as the family refused permission for any of his music to be played. I know I've linked it - but I did warn

I do like the "what's yer favourite..." Threads
Maggie Bell
Dolores O'Riordan
PJ Harvey Ann Wilson Grace Slick
Speaking of labels, "Ladies" in Rock - bit olde worlde and dare I say condescending - in a nice way:)( double sarcasm) Couldn't see 'Gentlemen Guitar Players in Rock' as a heading.
I'm old enough (unfortunately) to remember the 70's and the attitude towards women in music and in particular rock music. Folk music was okay - women were allowed - goes back to tradition but rock was firmly a man's world.
Sexism was used as a marketing tool for Suzy Quatro. What, a woman rock singer AND she play's guitar?!
I worked in a Virgin record store in Glasgow in '72. It was clear from the start that I was there not to be behind the counter advising and selling the music but to sit in the corner selling beads and patchouli oil. In my place. That wasn't a revelation, I spent my time in flats listening to music and knowing that to really understand rock music you had to be male... and have a wall of albums, all plastic wrapped and in alphabetical order...to really appreciate and understand the guitar licks, the chord changes etc etc
We've moved on.

Yes, Ben Wishaw looks the part. I don't really know much about the casting process, but I'd say for a biopic there would have to be some resemblance to the person they're playing although I don't think Rami Malek really looked much like Freddie Mercury - he did after make-up. It's a good question . I'm going to think about it. Any actors that I think about are all too old to play the younger band now. I see Richard E Grant on stage as Ian; Tom Baker as John Evan ...hang on here's a young 'un

Good Thread Orion. Off the top of my head for the part of Ian from say, early 20's to early 40's, covering his time in Skye etc I nominate the Scottish actor Richard Rankine. Richard brings humour, warmth and stubbornness to his role in Outlander. I can see him with long hair and a torn coat. He'd have to tone down his accent a bit as Ian lost most of his east coast brogue when he moved to England. here he is promoting his photography - a man of many talents as indeed is Ian

Remembrance Sunday 2020"Rise And Fall" I've seen the sunlight shining on the valley I've seen the shadows darken on the deep I've seen the young men riding out for glory And broken in defeat There was an hour that never knew a gloaming*( twilight) The whole of life, enchanted in a day And we'll be there, forever in the places Where we used to be Passing the hedgerows, moving through the orchards Through the bocage and breaking out for Caen Dealing fear and all our dices loaded With the courage of the dawn And some will rise and some will fall To gain the world or lose it all And that time was mine to hear you when you called You were our youngest, brightest flower Walking side by side through our darkest hour And we'll take this cup, this portion evermore I've seen the last wave breaking on the beaches I've seen the angels crying on the wire I've seen the first star up and brightly shining Couldn't rise much higher Now we're waiting here not getting older But we can dream like we cannot believe With all those fools, those great historic moments That flatter to deceive And some will come and some will go To rise on wings in the skies of gold Or to fall down to the final, silent cold When I was young it burned so bright The only son, a rising Christ Now I'm left here in the fall out of that light The rise and fall The rise and fall fb.watch/1DKeZdruVG/Let me know if that link doesn't work - it does for me but I'm logged in to FB. It's an official Runrig Facebook video of a great performance of the song at Edinburgh castle. If it doesn't here's the song.

I actually preferred the Q&A with him in 2009... yikes....eleven years ago! jethrotull.proboards.com/thread/1165/ian-anderson-february-2009-answersEven the last one was seven years ago,and there's been plenty happening in Ian's world and the world of Tull since then. It's a good idea to have another Q&A, probably not this year maybe early '21? Plenty of time to think up some good questions because as you can see from the last ones, he can be facetious at times so the trick might be to keep it light and short but also get him to reveal.....something. That was a great read, and nonrabbit, a walk in the countryside with Ian was on offer was it not..... Aye, and I never did get round to making a Thread about it either

Thank you, my dear Tull world and real world friends. I am ignoring this birthday but planning to note next year, 'when I'm 64' but I knew a peek at our Tull oasis would bring friendly greetings from the sanest part of my life: Tull Fans. My work is out of control....a parade of young people, 12 to 30, landing in the psychiatric emergency room...mostly because their parents fight them over screen and phone and video game hours vs attention to online school. Hmmm...take away the only social oxygen these kids have managed to preserve and you are surprised to end up in an emergency room at 1:00 AM with a kid threatening or having attempted suicide...surprise? These kids need momadectomies and dadedectomies if you ask me...let them be. No one can remember 15 and imagine how it feels for teens right now? Whoops...sorry to whine. Thanks for birthday greetings and for 365 days a year connection. I hope to catch up a bit on Tull news a little deeper into current shift. For my birthday, a 18.5 hour shift turned into a 19.5 hour shift thanks to clock change from daylight saving's time. That plus blue moon ! Not whining - venting (and god knows you need to with your job and hours) We're here as friends and listeners. Stay safe and sane in this week of madness in a year full of it X

I used to buy NME every week just to see if there was any news about Tull in it and to see 'Tour dates' mentioned I'd have been very excited to see that on the front page Same here. It was like the enthusiasm that I used to have for the 'Bunty' went to 'Jackie' and then NME! Not forgetting the lyrics magazine - I've forgotten the name Ha! Sitting memorising the lyrics of songs with way more enthusiasm ever shown for school work.
