A friend of mine has just returned from a lovely holiday in maddog land and instead of the usual stick of rock I've been given these 3 beauties instead. The Betty Stogs is a beaut. Haven't tried the other two - yet My day off tomorrow, I might just try one of those two and let you know.

Here in the States there are now a huge number of 'micro-brews' some will never leave the counties they're brewed in and are found in local bars. Many are great, many are quite strong bordering on harsh with a lack of subtleties. Some are flat.
My favorite Stout(s) at the moment (for the last few years) are Samuel Smith's varieties from England. They are a nicely done. From Germany, I also have a strong affinity for Hefe-Weiss, especially from a hand-pumped tap (fresh, in Germany) the way it's supposed to be - as here in the States most pubs use compressed air tanks. So it's bottled - Paulaner is one I prefer and yes, with a lemon wedge, which I was also served in Germany. Summer is my favorite time for Hefe-Weiss - galunk, galunk, galunk!!!!

Rhymney is actually my home town.I live around 10 miles South these days. The Rhymney Brewery was bought out by Whitbread and eventually closed I think in the 1980's. The name still exists and the beer is brewed at a smaller place near the village of Dowlais. ( couple of miles away ). Glad to report that my father drinks Rhymney bitter and has asked me to tel you it's the best beer he has ever tastd ( he tends to be a bit biased to most things Welsh ). The Bells of Rhymney is a famous poem by Idris Davies .... www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHZgIlYSgiACheers Bunkerfan
