Blimey, I'd maybe swap Mirage for the Snow Goose & Pawn Hearts For H to He but other than that the man (or woman) who posted that is a genius!! I'd put Fragile & Going For The one in there too but that wouldn't be a top ten anymore would it??!!

Funny how close our votes landed, Col, seeing the thread title...and before seeing your post, I had already settled on 'Tales from Topographic oceans' as my favorite pure prog. Can't take much 'Yes' these days....stop listening after Relayer, despite thinking 'Gates of D' is their second best work after 'Tales'...bought 'Close to the Edge' on CD not long ago and didn't like it anymore.

It struck me looking at that list how many of them I was never very fussed on. King Crimson, Gentle Giant - too heavy and jazzy for me. Never liked Van or Yes much either too overblown. Floyd and Oldfield's TB - Yes I remember the hype before the release of TB (was this the first ever big pre-marketing hype in music?) "like nothing you have ever heard before!" I think now it's long and self-indulgent (hello prog) apart from the first 5 mins. However it was permanently glued to my underarm for a time and when I hear it now I think of the early 70's, parties, fun and rotating heads

I know it's oft-namedropped as a pinnacle of prog, but I really do adore King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King, as well as several of their other albums.
I'm also very fond of Nektar's "A Tab in the Ocean" and bands like Brainticket and Silberbart.
I guess I'm more into what they used to call Krautrock or Kosmiche Muzique like early Can, Amon Duul, Guru Guru, Harmonia, Faust and the like as well as some "motorik" stuff like Neu! and Cluster...

In the court of the Crimson King is definitely up there... its just dark and beautiful and strangely chaotic in a good way.. Its an experience to listen to! That being said, Close to the Edge and Tales are some major works, and one must not forget Selling england by the pound and foxtrot.... GAH SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM! Guess Thick as a Brick still outshines them all though
