Wow. Thanks again Graham. A picture I truly wanted to see, and was gratified to see or read of Ian having worked with this man on an issue concerning all sentient beings on this planet, namely water concerns, the impending reality of there not being enough, which I would suspect also gets into world wide population. A few things come to mind when I see Mr Gorbachev, among them, respect, love and nice looking daughter. Yeah I know it was his intent to maintain the Soviet Union, I won't be holding that against him, it was his duty. Just knew when he came in office this is a man that can be reasoned with. My only concern is that under the famous mark on his head was the number of the beast.

O.K I got one and It's a bit weird because it's personal. I worked with David Threlfall AKA Frank Gallager in Shameless in the late 80's on a film in Budapest we were both working on.
While out to a company dinner early on in the shoot, he asked me where I came from and I said Blackpool and he turned to some other actor to his right and said that's where Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull comes from and I turned to some other actor to my left and said "I used to go out with him" then we then turned to one another and a really weird friendship began that lasted six years. He told me that at one time in his teens his friends thought he was turning into Ian Anderson because he was such a big fan. He told me he dressed like him and everything. He knew all his songs and could sing them brilliantly. I listened to them both so I know. I actually told Ian about David in the early 90's and he said that he thought that it was very strange. David wasn't that famous then and Ian confessed that he didn't know any actors or at least only one, different now, he will be more clued up on the way things work.

Now that you mention it Frank Gallagher certainly has a touch of Aqualung about him -wonder if the album cover influenced Threlfall in any way? Also wonder if David has any pics of himself dressed like Ian?

That is really funny. David looks so extremely truly awful in this picture. I don't know if he has any pictures of himself looking like Ian. He was a teenager then and if I remember correctly 6 or so years younger than Ian and I didn't know David as a teenager. I didn't know him until he was in his mid thirties when he was playing a german war criminal. So David was just a young lad from Manchester when Ian was his hero. David was a very good mimic. He improvised a very good Prince Charles to me in our local park and then got to play him later in a film about Lady Diana.

I wonder if it's a good thing or not for an actor to be associated with such a character in respect of finding the next job? If it's such a strong and memorable figure then it might be a case of typecasting or then again some directors might want the publicity and cast them against type? David Threfall is of course a very successful actor.

Not sure if this counts as a celebrity fan, but in the book Sunshine on Scotland Street by Alexander McCall Smith (2012) is the following:
"Since then there had been telephone calls, a visit by Big Lou to the Mains of Mochle, and a trip to Glasgow to listen to a Jethro Tull concert. 'Those boys are gey musical,' was Alex's verdict on that." (Page 92)
Alexander McCall Smith is a very prolific Scottish author, most of his books being gentle but very perceptive comedies. The Scotland Street series looks at the lives of a number of inter-related residents of an Edinburgh street, poking gentle fun at the foibles of the Edinburgh middle class. The series is first aired as a daily column in the Scotsman newspaper before being collected as a book - so when this first appeared it may have related to a specific concert. 'Big Lou' is a no nonsense café owner who hails from a rural background near Arbroath, further up the coast from Edinburgh. She is used as a foil to some of the more pretentious Edinburgh residents. Alex is a farmer from Mains of Mochle who Big Lou is developing a relationship with. His verdict could be translated as 'rather musical', which in the area of Scotland he hails from is close to being ecstatic. So I wonder if this makes McCall Smith a fan?

I was at the Hollywood "House of Blues" Tull concert a few years ago and low and behold, Bette Midler was there having a great time, even singing along to a couple of songs. I was at the Las Vegas House of Blues and Midler was there as well, rocking out. Also, Howard Stern, John Stewart are fans if I recall correctly.

Tootull I know this post is from over a year ago but it is worth noting (in case someone else hasn't already) that this is just clipped together footage of a Metallica concert with Iron Maiden's cover of Cross-Eyed Mary as a soundtrack. None of the movements of the band ever really match up with the music. I suppose the Youtube user found a way he could accumulate a bunch of views.

A Rapid Fire Interview With Julie Klausner gothamist.com/2014/06/26/julie_klausner_1.phpFor awhile you were pretty obsessed with Jethro Tull. Lately, you’ve been in more of an Alice Cooper zone? What has caused this shift in priorities? Is there room for both prog and monster glam in our day to day lives? I think there is! Well look at you, Jake! You went and answered your own question! I, too, think there is absolutely enough room in a healthy day to day life for lots and lots of #Tull AND Alice Cooper. #Tull rules and Alice Cooper should be worshipped like The Great Satan! (Remember I told you I was a Satanist earlier?) Julie Klausner en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julie_Klausner

He's not been mentioned in this thread before probably because we took it for granted that he was a fan.
Fish has a blog and in this blog he has a detailed story about Ian from the past right up to the present- he likes HE.
Great read.
"..We go back a long ways our first meeting being at the Theakston festival outside Wakefield on the 28th August 1982. It was Marillion’s first ever festival and we were first on stage on Saturday afternoon ( I opened with “good evening” just after midday! )
I walked out of the dressing room area to come face to face with non other than the singer from the headline act and having been a fan of “Tull”‘ since I was a teenager I was as taken aback as Ian was when confronted by a 6ft 5 Scotsman wearing full face make up. We eyed each other up slightly bemused at what to say or do.
He’d chosen us to open the day after listening to our demo which we had sent to the festival which he was co promoting. I found out, as we reminisced on gigs gone by this weekend, that he’d chosen Marillion over Runrig ....
