Best Jethro Tull music video
I'm not including TOTP performances like Witches Promise or Solstice Bells. Only proper music videos. Let's get the list sorted out first. Have I missed anything out?
Life's A Long Song - 10 Sweet Dream - 10 Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die! - 10 Moths - 10 The Whistler - 10 Heavy Horses - 10 Dun Ringill - 10 Flyingdale Flyer - 10 Lap of Luxury - 10 Steel Monkey - 10 Jump Start - 10 Said She Was A Dancer - 10 Kissing Willie - 10 Rocks on the Road - 10
------
Let the voting commence....
Life's A Long Song - 10 Sweet Dream - 10 Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die! - 11 Moths - 10 The Whistler - 10 Heavy Horses - 10 Dun Ringill - 10 Flyingdale Flyer - 09 Lap of Luxury - 10 Steel Monkey - 10 Jump Start - 10 Said She Was A Dancer - 10 Kissing Willie - 10 Rocks on the Road - 10
Hard choice this - today I think I will vote for TOTRNR - I love the theatrics and invention of this video.
Flyingdale Flyer is going down one point.

I haven't seen all of these, but am guessing that Slipstream features a few? In which case I have to agree - I love TOTRRTYTD but seeing the kids in their underwear in Flyer makes me feel a bit uneasy and leads to a point off.

Tull's best video is 'the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles'...classic Tull w/Hammondx2 and Evans. Choosing amongst the others is too hard...Rocks is great Ian but not so Tull...Steel monkey is clever tribute to ZZ Top...Dancer is quite beautifully done

Never liked the TOTRRTYTD video but the The Whistler vid is a classic IMO along with Rocks...., and Steel Monkey. I suppose it all boils down to the era(s) that they were produced. Good thread though.

Placing a vote for The Whistler today. Excellent video - rolling tape at the start, the band at work sitting around the mixing desk, pipes, cross-fades, different angles, snappy editing, two wee plastic cups of tea/coffee/orange juice/milk sitting in front of John Evan and big rectangular 70s headphones! Love it!
That short promo of Budapest on the 20 Years video...I wonder if any more of that exists that wasn't included on the video. Does anyone know?
A favourite clip of mine (although not actually a Tull video) is in the Channel 4 Fish'N'Sheep and Rock'n'Roll documentary. The bit when Ian goes into his studio and starts playing keyboard and singing. Great tune he sings there - cool to see him working in his studio like that.
Rocks on the Road is an excellent video. Great editing on this too - during the instrumental break there is a shot of an old lady with a walking stick. I have always found that image very poignant.
Flyingdale Flyer is going down another point.

Heavy Horses wins pretty much hands down for me, though I will give some votes to Dun Ringill. In part HH because of the memory in the Tull media wasteland of 78 how bold that video stood out when it was played on whatever rock video show like Don Kirshner, probably alongside Peter Frampton, Donna Summer, some softcore new wave band, nothing too scary..But Ian, JE, they were scary, dripping with character. I felt like yeah...these are the cats. Martin's monocle opener alone pretty much makes it a slam dunk for me. For better or worse that video is Tull, absolutely one of a kind. The only thing missing would be a little bug eyed fluterage, but it gives way to the lovely beasts. Clean brass to flash the dawn on Don Kirshner, I love that. I mean check out that freakin hat JE is wearing, and that military call to order drumroll from bonnie boy Barrie, those are golden Tull moments.

Or maybe it's because it's an accurate colour/tone for a beach in Scotland ........in Summer ;D

I am guessing everyone has noticed in that Steel Monkey video the man on drums in the stovepipe hat is Dave Mattacks, who still was about 4 yrs shy of his actual brief tenure with the band. I recall reading in A New Day that he was more available than Doane on that particular day, probably by several thousand miles, and was still in FC with Dave at the time. Points off as much for my disinterest in the song,(although I have heard live versions of it that burn pretty nice) though I have never thought it had the first thing to do with ZZ Top, I would not be surprised if IA is only marginally aware of their, and Dire Straits existence. I also recall reading in A New Day when there was all the talk of elements of Crest sounding like Dire Straits, or maybe even being influenced by them, (please, no!) that Mark Knopfler had gone into some guitar shop requesting a sound like Martin Barre, I believe some years before Crest. So who sounds like who?

Hey 'Stray...The Steel Monkey video is too a wink and tribute to ZZ Top...as is the mention of a ZZ member in Rattlesnake trail': Dusty Hill. Somewhere or another, I actually read of ian's admiration for the little old band from texas...who do nothing for me beyond a bit of humor and a song called 'Tush'....pronunciation butchered by the texans!

No votes for Moths yet - methinks it's a good example of his method acting. However the thing that puts me off, as a sainted ex smoker, is bloody hell "all that smoke"!! The cigarette business Ian does in the 'Moths' and 'Heavy Horses' videos is very entertaining. He keeps on going to take a draw on the cigarette just as he is about to sing.

Love this thread. I had to go back and watch many of them, and I enjoyed myself greatly! Must say I love the more whimsical videos best, Kissing Willie, Moths, Dun Ringill, Too Old to Rock 'n Roll: Too young to die is just awesome! Rocks on the Road was a new vid for me and I was really impressed with it. But my vote has to go to Sweet Dream, Ian being Ian, and references to Aqualung, A Passion Play, the A album... Can't place the 2 little girls in the vid though. Anyone? Steel Monkey is my least favorite. Wasn't there a video for Jack in the Green? I swear I remember a video with IA playing that song under a green sky with ivy growing all around....

Love a good poll - shame I registered too late to participate in all the other recent ones! Life's A Long Song - 11 Sweet Dream - 08 Too Old to Rock 'n' Roll: Too Young to Die! - 08 Moths - 11 The Whistler - 10 Heavy Horses - 11 Dun Ringill - 11 Fylingdale Flyer - 16 Lap of Luxury - 10 Steel Monkey - 10 Jump Start - 10 Said She Was A Dancer - 11 Kissing Willie - 06 Rocks on the Road - 10 If I get the scoring system correctly it's 10 points a piece with an extra 2 for the best - and then adjustments here and there according to taste. Happy to throw a spanner in the works by scoring Fylingdale Flyer highest of all - there are reasons for this, mainly (a) that A is in my top 5 Tull LPs and Fylingdale Flyer definitely in my top 20 Tull songs; (b) the video is so (un?) intentionally hilarious that I love it and (c) that I've spent the last five years or so studying nuclear war planning (don't ask!) so it's a subject close to my heart. Plus I'm sure I used to have those same Y-fronts! Moths and Heavy Horses score well for the homemade-ness and warmth of them. Dun Ringill for the gorgeous Skye landscape, ditto Said She Was ... ; TOTRARTYTD scores low as I've never been a fan of the song and Dave's out of time teacup movements irritate me every time. Sweet Dream - pfffff. Kissing Willie - dreadful. Just to check - should Song For Jeffrey (Rock & Roll Circus) and the animated Solstice Bells promo not count also? Maybe not Jeffrey? Gareth
