I've had a friend from the Van world named Rose, from Wales. She calls me about once a year, usually around New Year's. But now she has moved to the states so that she could marry another Van-lister, which she did on May 1. She sent out an email with the title "Bliss in North Carolina," so who couldn't be happy to see that?
But the surprise in it for me was that she was talking about missing her British yummies and having to order them through the mail. I live in a large enough city where I can get imports such as that, and it turns out that for a lot of things it'll probably be cheaper for me to send it to her than for her to order it. So it looks like I'm going into the trafficing business. That isn't illegal, is it?
What's a girl to do when true love separates her from a steady supply of McVities?

I went out and did research today so I'm getting ready to send her a list of stuff I can get. So, Jeff? BTW, I asked my new boyfriend if he liked JT and he said "My family's rednecks, of course I do!" I had to LOL at that, because I wouldn't normally make that demographic connection.

you poor thing...he probably thinks Jethro Tull is the Jethro on 'The Beverly Hillbillies'...love is blind, no? Rednecks DO NOT like Tull...they like Lynryd Skynyrd.

And Molly Hatchet!
I mentioned JT mainly because he was talking about liking British folk rock - but I'm not sure he is familiar with that era of JT.
I don't think of people from Chicago as being rednecks anyway, but what do I know?

Talking of foreign food I have relatives who were stationed in what was then known as West Germany with the US army and I used to visit them a lot from "boring bland food Scotland" of the 60's - It was like paradise for me going to the PX store - weird exotic food like chocolate powder mix and all sorts of bright dazzling food packets - to quote Bill Bryson on American food "a paradise of junk food" I LOVED IT

I was a bit disappointed when I looked at this thread with that tantalising title I expected a bit more of.. " 50 year old Tull fan seeks alluring violin player to whisk away to a paradise in the Wild West!!

Where was this? I know what you mean, though, and although my fascination was always in reverse, other people's big eyes can start to make you see your own food's uniqueness more clearly. I used to have a Dutch email friend and we'd send each other huge boxes of food and it was as much fun to hear his reaction to what I'd send as it was to try what he'd send. In the past 20 years we've got some good grocery stores with foreign goods, but representing Britain and Western Europe it's usually expensive, fancy things like pickles, mustards, jams and the like, rather than ordinary "staff of life" kinds of things, which is really what I'm interested in. This store with the McVities is a little different, with things actual expats might miss like Heinz spaghetti and tomato soup, salad cream, HP sauce and like that. I do like that HP sauce! I'm just incredibly fascinated by this stuff, so forgive me for going on: the neighborhood my family was based in here in Louisville - I haven't lived there since the early 90s - was really going downhill and because of the lack of expense, that's where many immigrants started moving - mainly Vietnamese, West Indies, Mexican, Bosnian (we've got a huge Bosnian community), now Iraqi -- my grandparents would have been horrified -- they were used to what they were used to -- but it's really revitalized the neighborhood, it's great. And the restaurants and grocery stores are wonderful. One of the old neighborhood stores saw where the bread was going to be buttered and completely transformed itself and now about a third of the produce section is filled with things I can't identify and have no idea what to do with. It's still a cheap neighborhood to live in, but it's getting a certain cache so it might not stay that way.

My Dad was stationed in Germany twice - Bremerhaven and Trier. WOW coincidence - my uncle was at Bremen in 67/68 ! He lived quite a bit south of Bremen in a village near Delmenhorst. He was also stationed in the early to mid 60's near Munich no idea the name of the base I was only about 7/8 years old when I visited then. Gorgeous place - we went on a car journey to Austria/Switzerland and over the Alps to North Italy! He's retired now and lives in Orange County Cali - I haven't made the trip over yet to visit as I am scared of flying hence not knowing what newspapers or wine is served in first class ;D ;D

fatman's a lawyer...check with him before you get in too deep Oh, Christ, legal advice again? What do I know, I'm a personal injury lawyer. Seriously, though, Rebecca, I don't think there's anything illegal about what you want to do, but why on earth would you want to do it? And what are McVities anyway? Sounds like some sort of cat food or something you could get at McDonalds. Jeff

I've been told I should try them, but I haven't yet. We've been comparing notes this morning and it looks like she's coming out slightly ahead by doing it the way she has been, so I may not send anything after all, but I would do it if I could save her money because she's my friend. Surely you know, Jeff, that if you needed your Happy Balls* or Derby pie or Moonlight BBQ sauce or Burgoo or Majeskas that I'd do the same for you! *a brand of bourbon candy, for the dirty minded

Derby Pie, Moonlight BBQ sauce, etc. sound great too. After all I am the Fatman. Jeff

The thing is, I don't get along with her family....for very valid reasons (long story)....and her loyalty is divided, when she should be 100% on my side, but instead she defends them in their wrongdoing and their ceaseless efforts to sabotage our marriage. Anyway, what's this about you going to England? Jeff
