Hello, Fairporters Doesn’t time fly? Christmas is just round the corner already and we’re looking forward to a busy few weeks as the festive season approaches. More significantly, in just under six weeks Fairport Convention will be entering its Golden Anniversary year – yes, on 27 May it will be 50 years since the band first took to the stage back in 1967. We’ll be celebrating this milestone of flying time throughout 2017. Our 34-date ‘Fairport @50’ Golden Anniversary Winter Tour will start in Glasgow on Tuesday 24 January and finish in Banbury on Sunday 5 March. The special guest will be Sally Barker who came to prominence in the all-girl folk group The Poozies but is also known for her appearances on the BBC TV talent show The Voice where she sang on Sir Tom Jones’ team. All the ‘Fairport @50’ dates are listed on the gigs page of our website. The tour is selling strongly so book soon. There’ll also be an anniversary album early next year. It will be titled 50:50@50 - half the tracks celebrate Fairport’s illustrious past with recent live versions of favourites from our back catalogue while the other half look to the band’s present and future with studio recordings of brand new songs and tunes. The studio tracks were recorded at Woodworm Studio earlier this month and some of the live recordings aren’t much older. The new album is produced and engineered by our ineffable soundman John Gale and features guest appearances from Jacqui McShee and Robert Plant. In May, we’ve got something really special lined up for you. Fifty years to the day – almost to the hour, in fact – since the band’s Golders Green debut Fairport Convention returns to north London for a Golden Anniversary Gig. This celebration of our past, present and future will take place at The Union Chapel, Highbury N1 on Saturday 27 May 2017. Keep an eye on our website for box office information and details of the musical guests. Pre-Christmas gigs Back in the here-and-now, we’ll be out touring with our individual projects in the run up to Christmas. Peggy and Anthony John Clarke have a dozen or so gigs booked in November and early December. As anyone who saw the show last year will attest, it mixes music and mirth in equal measure. Later in December, Peggy will be out with The Dylan Project. Fronted by Steve Gibbons on vocals and guitar, the band features Peggy on bass, Gerry Conway on drums, Phil Bond on keyboards and PJ Wright on pedal steel and guitar. This year is the fiftieth anniversary of Dylan’s seminal album ‘Blonde on Blonde’ and these Dylan Project shows will feature every track from the LP in album order. Also in December, Chris and Simon will be touring with St Agnes Fountain and The Albion Christmas Band respectively. Don’t miss the seasonal spirit of these shows. The dates and details are all on the gigs page of our website. www.fairportconvention.com/Cropredy tickets for Christmas Once again, we’re offering three-day festival tickets and three-day camping for a limited period in the run-up to Christmas. So there’s one of your Christmas pressie problems solved. This year our box office will open at midnight on Sunday 11 December. The first 1000 orders will get a special Fairport Christmas Card individually signed by all of us and the first 2000 orders will receive a souvenir windscreen sticker. The box office will only be open for one week so there may be a rush - don’t delay ordering your tickets. All other Cropredy tickets will go on sale on Wednesday 1 February 2017. Fairport’s Cropredy Convention is on Thursday 10, Friday 11 and Saturday 12 August 2017. Obviously the line-up will reflect our fiftieth anniversary - look out for some surprise guests - but won’t be dominated by it. In fact, the line-up is shaping up nicely (we’re currently contracting the Thursday headliner!) and we’ll announce some of the acts shortly in our next newsletter. Meanwhile keep an eye on Twitter and Facebook. Our box office will also be selling tickets for the now-traditional pre-Cropredy ‘warm up’ gigs in Banbury on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 August 2017. This year we’ll be in a new venue, the Banbury Trades and Labour Club, which is conveniently close to the town centre. In closing… Check the gigs page on our website – it would be great to see you at one of the various pre-Christmas shows and, of course, on our Fairport @50 Golden Anniversary Winter Tour. Love from us all, Simon, Peggy, Ric, Chris and Gerry. Don't forget to visit our website, follow us on twitter or join us on facebook for the latest updates from the world of Fairport.

www.banburyguardian.co.uk/whats-on/music/cropredy-s-most-famous-export-in-sky-arts-documentary-1-8231761Cropredy’s most famous export in Sky Arts documentaryPicture: David Jackson STUART PRESTIDGE Published: 15:03 Monday 06 November 2017 An in depth look into the formation and continued influence of Cropredy’s Fairport Convention, in celebration of the folk bands 50th anniversary, will be aired later this month. Titled ‘Fairport Convention: Folk Heroes’, the 70-minute film will be transmitted at 9pm on Saturday, November 25. The film tells how five young musicians in North London formed Fairport Convention during 1967s ‘summer of love’. The band went on to shake English folk music to its roots by fusing it with rock, an approach which outraged some purists but delighted a new and devoted audience. In the subsequent five decades, Fairport Convention has attracted widespread critical acclaim, won a coveted BBC Lifetime Achievement Award, and Radio 2 listeners voted Fairport’s ground-breaking album Liege and Lief ‘The Most Influential Folk Album of All Time’. The documentary has been made by London-based independent producer Special Treats Productions. The company’s are no strangers to music documentarieshaving also produced ‘XTC: This Is Pop’, ‘I’m Not In love: The Story of 10cc’ and the award-winning film ‘UB40: Promises and Lies’. The film features rare archive interviews and footage as well as newly-filmed interviews with the current Fairport members and former members and collaborators including Ashley Hutchings, Richard Thompson, Iain Matthews, Judy Dyble, Joe Boyd, Ralph McTell, Maddy Prior, Bob Harris, Suggs, Rick Wakeman, Steve Winwood, and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. The film examines Fairport’s first five years in detail, including the tragic motorway crash which killed drummer Martin Lamble. It details Fairport’s pivotal role in the evolution of British folkrock, how the band fostered major talents such as Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick and spawned other notable bands including Matthews Southern Comfort, Steeleye Span, and Fotheringay. The story is brought up to date with contemporary material filmed at Fairport’s annual ‘own brand’ music festival held at Cropredy in Oxfordshire. The closing sequence features this years Fairport Convention festival performance when virtually all the surviving former members joined the current line-up on stage. Producer and director, Charlie Thomas, said; “Our aim is to explain how important Fairport’s influence has been and continues to be - in other words, why the band matters. “We have not set out to make a comprehensive, year-by-year history of Fairport; that has been done before. “The film concentrates on two periods - the first five years and the band today. The result is a celebration of a very British institution and an assertion of Fairport’s continuing relevance.”

13 November 2017 Stars of folk music are rocking upFOLK music fans are in for a treat next week — with both up and coming talent and established favourites preparing to play intimate live shows. www.henleystandard.co.uk/news/music/117814/stars-of-folk-music-are-rocking-up.htmlTwo nights later the Crooked Billet at Stoke Row is the venue for “Mirth and Music” — featuring the talents of Fairport Convention multi-instrumentalist Dave Pegg and Irish stand-up comedian and songsmith Anthony John Clarke.
The pub’s chef proprietor Paul Clerehugh said: “Belfast-born Anthony John is recognised as one of the top songwriters on the acoustic-folk scene with 12 albums and three singles to his name, including the beautiful Seven in Ireland and Irish Eyes. He enjoys an enormous following in the UK, Europe, Australasia and the USA.”
Joining him for the evening will be Dave Pegg — now the longest serving member of folk rockers Fairport Convention, who this year celebrated their 50th anniversary.
Pegg joined the band in 1969 but has also played bass with a number of significant folk and rock groups, including Jethro Tull and the Ian Campbell Folk Group while also undertaking solo projects.
Paul Clerehugh added: “The friends will draw on a wealth of hits and much-loved songs for an evening of exquisite, outstanding music and a lot of humour. It’s a real treat to enjoy such legendary artists in the intimacy of the Crooked Billet — in comparison to enjoying them at the Cropredy festival playing to 25,000 fans.
“They perform at the Billet because they like the pub — not to mention copious quantities of red wine after the show.
“Peggy and AJ are truly astonishing musicians, delivering songs that make your spine tingle. You can feel their friendship and the show is as much about funny humour, laughs and smiles as belting songs.”

Taken from the Mike Amos Column in The Northern Echo
"last Thursday, we’re at the Gala Theatre in Durham to see Fairport Convention – a folk/rock band on the road for 50 years and still able to fill the place. “If we tour for another ten years we won’t need roadies, we’ll need travelling paramedics,” said Ric Sanders, the fiddle player. Dave Pegg, the bass man, remained seated almost throughout. He needs a new hip, poor chap. Musically masterful, most of their jokes– and much of the audience – may be as whiskery as they are. It was good, though, that they’d contemplated a bit of Handel. Handel, said Ric, had merged with Hinge and Bracket. “They became The Doors.”
I hope you get a new hip soon Dave.

Fairport’s Cropredy Convention 2018 is proud to announce that headlining our festival this year we welcome the legendary Brian Wilson. A Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee and recipient of the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement, Brian Wilson is one of popular music's most revered figures, the main creative force behind some of the most cherished recordings in rock history. In 1966 Brian produced three landmark records, recordings that changed the course of popular music. The first was Pet Sounds. Universally acclaimed for its ambition and sophistication, Pet Sounds is widely acknowledged as one of the most influential albums of all time. Primarily working with a new collaborator, lyricist and songwriter Tony Asher, Wilson produced a masterpiece that still stands at number 2 in the Rolling Stone '500 Greatest Albums of All Time' list, only beaten to the top spot by The Beatles' Sgt Pepper. Pet Sounds featured four hit singles; a reworking of the folk standard Sloop John B, Wouldn’t It Be Nice, Caroline No and God Only Knows. The latter was released as a solo single under Brian’s name and is considered by many (including Paul McCartney) as one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. And the good news is that Brian and his band will be performing Pet Sounds (and more!) for us this August! Buy tickets online

www.banburyguardian.co.uk/news/peggy-s-memoir-gets-the-thumbs-up-from-bob-dylan-1-8728087Peggy’s memoir gets the thumbs up from Bob DylanThe Dylan Project, Gerry Conway, PJ Wright, Steve Gibbons, Phil Bond and Dave Pegg ROSEANNE EDWARDS Published: 15:27 Tuesday 04 December 2018 Next Wednesday’s gig for The Dylan Project will have extra special meaning for bass player Dave Pegg. For ‘Peggy’ has just received plaudits for his memoir Off The Pegg from the great man himself - Bob Dylan. Peggy - best known for his membership of Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull - is a huge Dylan fan and has been part of The Dylan Project band since its inception. He is delighted that his hero has enjoyed his recently published book. “Nigel Schofield who’s the co-writer of the book is an expert on Bob Dylan and Bob and his manager send stuff to Nigel to evaluate whether it’s worth releasing. “He sent Bob both the Dylan Project albums we made and Bob said he liked them. So he asked for a copy of my book and Nigel sent him a copy. “The message came back that Bob had enjoyed the book and thanked me. I was so pleased about that. “We went to see ELO and I gave Jeff Lynne a copy. Jeff was in the Travelling Wilburys with Bob (along with George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty) so the last two surviving Travelling Wilburys have each had a copy.” Best-selling author Stephen King - who’s a big Fairport fan - has also asked for a copy. Off The Pegg is selling like hot cakes and it is thought a second print will happen in 2019. It is a hugely enjoyable read and full of ‘names’, showing that Peggy has worked and played with some of folk and rock’s biggest stars. The book is available at davepegg.co.uk and from Waterstones. Tickets for the Dylan Project are still available at Chipping Norton Theatre on 01608 642350.

www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/lifestyle/culture/fairport-convention-musician-dave-pegg-924979.htmlSaturday, May 18, 2019 - 10:00 AM Fairport Convention musician: Dave PeggWhen I told my school teacher I was going to be a professional musician, he laughed. But I always had my mind set on it. My earliest memory of music is my father playing the accordion and singing hymns as he and my mother cycled their tandem, with me in a sidecar, from Birmingham to Wales for our summer camping holiday. My parents were very religious. My father was a methodist lay preacher. I began playing in Yardley Grammar in Birmingham, in the school band. I persuaded my working class parents to splash out on my very own guitar. Then, like most of my peers, I taught myself to play using Bert Weedon’s book ‘Play in a Day’. After the first three weeks I was just about able to tune the guitar. With my two O Levels, in art and English, I started out working in an insurance office in Birmingham on 28 pounds 12 shillings a month. I used my first paycheque to buy a better guitar. My main job was opening the post, which left me plenty of free time to use their phone to secure gigs for our new band. The British folkrock music scene was exploding - the pub circuit was huge, every pub had a music night - and I got my big break soon after, joining Fairport Convention in 1969, when I changed from guitar to bass. I also played bass with Jethro Tull. It was a no brainer to leave my insurance job. The irony was that they’d no longer insure me in my new career. I was 10 years younger than every one else, and very innocent. They taught me how to drink and as we toured the world, that innocence soon left me. After 50 years, the highlights are still the nights in the most amazing concert halls - like Carnegie Hall, The Albert Hall, Festival Hall… My biggest challenge was going through a divorce with my ex-wife Christine. We’d been together 38 years and ran a local music festival together. I didn’t know how I was going to survive the split and got heavily into drink and drugs along the way. I’d become aggressive when I drank and eventually I had some counselling which helped. It’s all in my book Off The Pegg, along with all the stories I wanted to share about the music scene of the sixties. I only have confidence when I’m playing with other people, either on my bass, guitar or mandolin. There’s strength in numbers. I can’t stand in front of an audience and do it on my own because I still get very nervous. If I could change one thing in our society I’d change the UK government. Brexit is the most idiotic thing they’ve done. If you look at it just from the industry I work in, every festival is down by 25% at least this year. The feelgood factor has gone. I’m not sure if there’s an afterlife. I can’t say I believe in one. I no longer go to church but I respect people who do so. I live between Banbury and Brittany with my partner Ellen. Money is no longer a big issue. I’m doing what I want to do and never have to worry if I haven’t got any gigs lined up. My son Matthew plays bass and my daughter Stephanie worked in the music business for a while. My idea of misery is working in a factory. In part, I took up music to avoid that ever happening. I’m 71 now. I’m pretty fit. I had my hip replaced last year. To keep in shape, I go for walks on the beach and I swim a lot. We have a swim spa in the back garden in Brittany. I try not to drink more than one bottle of red wine a day. So far life has taught me not to take it all too seriously. Fairport Convention with Special Guests The 4 of Us are live in concert on May 21 - Draiocht, Blanchardstown; May 22 - University Concert Hall, Limerick; May 24 - Live at St. Lukes, Cork and May 25 - The Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny.

www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/best-bassists-in-music/Best Bassists Of All Time: 50 Legendary Bass Players You Need To KnowFour mighty strings and 50 mighty players: the best bassists are the ones who carve out signature sounds and play as many memorable licks as the guitarists. Published on July 3, 2019 By Brett Milano Four mighty strings, 50 mighty players. Common wisdom holds that the bass player is the “quiet one” in a band, playing essential parts of a song that you don’t necessarily notice. Not the case with the 50 best bassists, who have carved out signature sounds and played as many memorable licks as the guitarists. 43: Dave Pegg (Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull)Both of the bands Dave Pegg played in, Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull, have a history of remarkable bassists (take a bow, Ashley Hutchings and the late Glenn Cornick). But Pegg stands out for his dexterity, his swing and his ability to ignore any folk/rock boundaries.
