We're all rock fans - sort of - I grew up in the 60s/70s listening to Hendrix/Clapton/Page/Beck and wondered what is my favourite guitar break? There's thousands to choose from and I can honestly say, the guitar passage that's as good as any, is Martin Barres' guitar work on the live version of Jump Start from the "In Concert" album. From 4:22 onwards, it is truly awesome. There's a wonderful false ending at 5:22, after which Martin is let loose - do yourself a favour and buy it.

There's a You Tube out there, from the tribute concert to george harrisson, where Prince takes the last guitar lead on 'while my guitar gently weeps'....he goes through it twice...by the end..everyone on stage is just stunned...watching him with their guitars hanging around their necks ( Petty, Harrison's son, the ELO guy who was in the Wilburys and a few other famous guys) Prince should have been arrested....he stole the show!

Wow, I'm going to have to hunt that up. You don't happen to have the link handy, do you?
Whenever people ask questions like this, I have a hard time coming up with anything, but I also know that later on something will be triggered and I'll be suddenly thinking "that's one of the best." In such a way I just now remembered that the end of Purple Rain is just one such thing. Even if I tried to make a list, I know I'd miss important ones.

I know the one you are referring to SteelMonkey but its not from the George tribute, those were all guys that knew him, memory says it was from either a HOF thing or a Grammy some years before George's demise. Ain't no doubt that Prince fully burns, though I still manage to be relatively unmoved by his career, though I don't doubt his vast talent. Jimi's Voodoo Chile at Woodstock (oddly never released first time round) remains the pinnacle to me, followed by the usual assortment of his other stuff, like that black and white Machine Gun from Band of Gypsy's, and of course the Star Spangled Banner, love the way he watches the bombs bursting in air, a true son of the 101st Airborne.

Apart from MB's guitar breaks, this is my favourite of David Gilmour's - and what an incredible light show

Wow, that's a tough question. I could probably do a list rather than pick one....and there would be a few classic Lynyrd Skynyrd tracks on there.

That's certainly a list and a half. Think I'll spend a day sometime working my way through it. Thanks for posting broadsword

Apart from MB's guitar breaks, this is my favourite of David Gilmour's - and what an incredible light show Now that is a very nice way to start the day indeed. (If you don't think about the lyrics too much!!) An old friend once commented on how "economical" a guitarist David Gilmour is, which I always thought was a really apt description.

wouldn't want Slash over for dinner...nor his pals...but some of those leads are pretty good

Allright...so mentioning Slash murdered the thread..I'll try again..Jerry Garcia tosses off a gutitar solo on 'Dark Star' that starts about 8 minutes into the song and continues for about 8 minutes after that...lots of bootlegs and countless posthumous releases of this song but none can touch the version on Live Dead, with humble recording technology of..what? 1968 or 69?
Another good one is by the hendrix acolyte, Randy California, of Spirit...a live release from 1976 (Tampa...but a much smaller venue than the Tull Tampa gig from that year). They cover 'Like a Rolling Stone' and the guitar solo is amazing...better than thir handful of 'Rolling Stone' versions on You Tube....but you can get the drift that way...I think the album ( Spirit of '76) is long out of print and never even made it to CD. You Tube has some good versions of 'Natures' Way'...not a song with a great guitar solo but a cool song anyway.

Yeah, Randy California....what a dude and very underated too IMO. Good call! I've been listening to mainly current music lately (there are just sooo many great new albums kicking around lately I can't keep up with it all, who said prog was dead?!!) This is a beautiful piece of guitar playing from Sylvan, the track is Postumous Silence from the live CD/DVD of the same name. Nothing overly flash, just a wonderful melodic solo that always makes me play it again...louder! I've taken the liberty of moving this to other music btw, hope you don't mind.
