Set list from the King's Lynn Corn Exchange
Dun Ringill March the Mad Scientist Just Trying to Be Jack in the Green Jeffrey Goes to Leicester Square Skating Away Serenade to a Cuckoo Back to the Family Tea with the Princess Fat Man Rocks on the Road **** Interval **** Someday the Sun won't shine for You Mother Goose Guitar Instrumental A Change of Horses Bouree My God Aqualung Locomotive Breath
A quote from a friend and fellow Tullie who went to it:
What a great night yesterday at the Corn Exchange, King's Lynn. The show was excellent and the interesting choice of material - including some songs that to the best of my knowledge have never been performed on stage before - allayed any earlier fears I had about it being just a re-run of the 'same old stuff'. Florian played a key role and demonstrated his skills on the acoustic guitar - he really is an exceptional player. The second half was a bit 'rockier' with Florian and Dave (on accordion) covering the parts normally reserved for Martin's electric guitar. Ian struggled vocally on some of the material but the more 'recent' stuff such as 'Rocks on the Road' - already written within his limitations - were done superbly. There was also the opportunity for me to hear two new pieces 'Tea with the Princess' and 'A Change of Horses'.

So are these 2 new 'pieces' songs or just instrumental pieces? Okay the end of the set is pretty predicatable but does look a nice set list - though lack of transport still means I'll have to miss the tour

'Tea with the Princess' and 'A Change of Horses' are both songs. Just got back from the Ian Anderson concert at Buxton Opera House and it was amazing! I never realized how great Florian is at playing guitar and Mark Mondesir is an excellent drummer. I was on the front row of the stalls so had a great view of Ian and the band. I thought the 2nd set was quite a lot better than the 1st set because it was more rockier stuff being played, with the acoustic versions of Aqualung and Loco Breath sounding excellent (I actually prefer the acoustic versions of these songs rather than the electric versions). As for the new songs, 'A Change Of Horses' sounds absolutely amazing, i really enjoyed it. Overall it was a great concert and i really enjoyed it. I am pretty sure that the set list was the same as the one at the King's Lynn Corn Exchange, that Maddog posted.

My take on the two shows I have attended ...Buxton and Lancaster
Buxton I was not expecting much but it was a truly Wonderful show Indeed its almost unbelievable but, this was probably the best musical performance by Ian and his associates I have ever seen in some 60 plus shows since 74. Vocally it was ok strong on some songs but pitiful on others such as Jeffrey goes to Leicester square. I was particularly impressed with the two new songs. They were long and epic in their instrumental scope ,lyrical wit and observation.. They are going to be huge. When (not if released) they may even satisfy those who want Ian to revisit a longer song writing format . Tea with the Princess was simply a awesome experience. A Change of Horses reminded me in feel to Rare and Precious Chain and parts of Better Moon . On first hearing though was much more intricate and dare I say progressive in structure than either. Ian has creativity again Every aspect of the performance oozed it. Fresh sounding ararngements . Ian appears to be rejuvinated by playing with Mark Mondesir on drums and Florian on guitar. Much credit needs to be given to John O'Hara who has obviously persuaded Ian to shake up some of the old arrangements and has got Ian’s creative juices flowing
Some comments on last nights show at Lancaster. Once again ,I really enjoyed it , there seems to be a real sparkle in Ian’s playing. The interplay between the musicians on this tour is awesome. Subtle changes to arrangements of songs such as Mother Goose , Aqualung , My God , Locomotive breath , Serenade to a Cuckoo and Bouree gave all players a chance to input their own ideas. Florian is a master of the guitar and his embellishments moved everything to a higher level. Mark Mondesir brought a jazz drummers touch of subtlety and really brought out the best in Ian’s flute playing. The band were as tight as a coopers barrel. Musicianship A*. A lot of hard work in preparation for this tour had obviously been done. . The set list was slightly changed Back to the Family and Some day being dropped and replaced by Tugboat Tim ( John O'Hara song featuring superb vocals by John and a expansive bass solo by David) and Griminellis Lament featuring Ian and Martin Skyrme. The new two songs were once again outstanding. Cannot wait to hear a full recorded version ... I would estimate that both both clocked in at 10 mins plus.
This was no Tull by numbers as some recent tours have been . All in all a ,refreshing and vibrant experience Best

Re Lancaster last night, absolutely concur with everything PP said. Ian's vocals on the first three numbers were the best I've ever heard live and the band were really on top form. Ian was in good fettle, as evidenced by him leaving his pick stuck in the strings at the start of Rocks on the Road, causing some bum notes. Initially baffled, he explained what had happened and just laughed it off

I better look both ways when I cross streets so I don't miss the shows in November...I need all you British and East Coast fans to applaud wildly during the new songs so they don't get ditched along the way.....many a tour has featured new stuff at the onset only to deteriorate into greatest hits by the time they get to the west coast....I'm not too worried this time...but, just to be safe, please give our man some positive feedback on the debut material. While you're at it...see if you can quash Bouree and Cuckoo without hurting any feelings.

Ian Anderson was interviewed on Planet Rock DAB here in the UK last night on the Nicky Horne show (approx. 9.15 pm UK time) which wasn't advertised and I caught the last few minutes of it. Should be available on the "listen again" facility at sometime but is not on their web site yet. He mentioned new material but as I didn't catch all of it I not sure exactly what he said. Did anyone hear the interview in full?

Maybe it sounds better live but it sounds "watered down" too much and lost it's edge.

Set list from yesterday (21 September) at Yeovil.
Dun Ringill March The Mad Scientist Just Trying To Be Jack In The Green Tea With The Princess Skating Away Tugboat Boy - poem by Ray Buck set to music and sung by John O'Hara Fat Man A Change Of Horses Rocks On The Road - interval- Who We Really Are - The Fancy Toys For You & Me - The Fancy Toys Gypsey Eyes - The Fancy Toys Bouree Mother Goose Andantino My God Aqualung -encore- Locomotive Breath (with a nod to LITP as it began in 5/4 time)
Superb concert at a new(ish) venue in Somerset. Plenty of us "grey haired rockers" in evidence but a surprising amount of "less follically challenged" folks including the 17 year old stepson of my friend and chauffeur who was pleasantly surprised by the concert and came away from the evening having realised that (a) 62 year old legends can still play a mean guitar and flute along with writing new songs and (b) we didn't rush the stage with our zimmer frames at the conclusion of the gig.
Those of you still to see the show are in for a treat - I only wish I could go again but you can't have everything in this life.

Fancy Toys inclusion???
BAH!!! How come not supporting the whole tour, I wonder? Gypsy Eyes is a great track, and James seems very happy to swap messages with fans (Facebook, etc) as well as sending out songs as attachments to e-mails.
How did they go down?

Ste They went down very well indeed and gained a few more followers. Ian A played back up flute (rhythm flute?) on Gypsey Eyes and to be honest I hadn't realised that James is quite a multi instrumentalist. Not only is he a fair drummer/percussionist but is also adept on mandolin and guitar. They were signing CDs in the foyer after the show but I did not get enough time to get one as we had a long journey back to Cornwall and the queue was long but I managed to get the song titles from him - he seems a well balanced fellow and very much like his dad close up. OK girls, sit down and stop screaming ;D

Every set list and review makes me more and more impatient for my turn-November 8 and 9....and I just try to have faith that the set list will not deteriorate along the way. What a bonus: Fancy Toys- The videos I've seen are very good.

Saw James Duncan on stage during the interval but I reckoned, wrongly as it turned out, he was acting as roadie for his dad. Hope the set list stays intact for the duration of this tour - the 2 new songs are IMO stunning. Maddog

According to Martin Webb "James says the FTs will be doing the rest of the tour, mainly because Ian never got round to inviting anyone else." Well, anyone going to the remainder of the shows won't miss out.

Hallo to all.I'm just back from my very last this year hollydays of which ten days in G.B and two spent in Buxton to see Ian,off course .I completely share all i've read from the others forum members. We really enjoyed the show.I can only add this:Florian and Mark way makes the show to the which we assisted a bit and pleasantly different by the usual J.T performance. That's what i've noticed,I mean the sound.I really love that.It seems Ian can arrange two groups! :oAnd also this time Ian has found the way to surprise us with the beautyful new songs .Every time it worths to be there! This time we were eleven friends there!! We might be in England next March in London or Manchester(only two, this time!!),no matter where, anyway. It would be nice to meet ourselves between forum members.
