I guess I maybe failing some of you in keeping my current musical exploits secreted up my sleeve. Sometimes I forget to inform myself.
Following some questioning from afar, here is a breif summary of what I've been up to the last couple of years. When not gardening that is.
Since vacating the circus known as Jethro Tull in 2006, in which I was a member since 1995, I have been involved with all kinds of new and wondrous musical entities. I have toured with The Divine Comedy, a great bunch of talented lads and lasses with Neil Hannon at the helm. Having spied them from afar, noting their witty and clever songs, it has been a pleasure to play with them. Neil is a card, a gent and a proper songwriter. Being involved with them lead me to meeting Joby Talbot, a past member and a great composer, for whom I supplied bass guitar for a film, "Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging" as well as other music for TV and film. Nigel Godrich, Radiohead's producer, was at the desk for these sessions which was a double pleasure for me being a lover of his close and warm sounds.
Since early 2007 I have been involved with Archive, a merry and riotous bunch, joining them on a mission to supply the world with 21st century music. The sound made is formidable, lying somewhere between Massive Attack and Radiohead. One CD of a live gig was released last year to loud applause and a slap on the back. The new studio CD is in the bag and was a pleasure to record down in sunny Brixton, London. It sounds great and gave me the opportunity to unleash some narly Moog tones and bass landscapes. It will be released in 2009. Cover your heads.
Away from these and other recordings and gigs with other bands, artists and composers I have been writing and recording my own music. Musically these instrumental and vocal-led pieces move around ambient and more aggresive backdrops. Think sparseness, beautiful sounds, a groovy beat and melodies. There is no known date for release as of yet, but am completing as we speak.
As of last week a new musical endeavour may well be in the offing. A project with Bernardo Lanzetti, Ronnie Johnson and Geoff Dunn, which in it's first run through yeilded small but bountiful fruits. It's going Zappa, some Brel and maybe a little Avant Garde in direction, but intends to offer some well executed and intesting music for the listener.
Music that Willy Porter, he of Milwaukee, and I have written together is still trying to see the light of day. It's great, hummable (think XTC) and I endeavour to bring it to you as soon as physically possible.
So, heaven only knows where I'm heading, but best I bloody well get on with it.
