Although Terry Ellis managed Tull from its inception into the 'late eighties', round about the time of SFTW, Jo Lustig became involved as well. This detail confuses me - were Ellis and Lustig co-managers, or was Lusting only drafted in because Ellis was becoming increasingly busy?
I'm not clear on when Lustig's Tull involvement ceased (it seems to have peaked around the Heavy Horses period and IA's co-production of Woman In The Wings - Maddy Prior was also a Lustig client).
And when exactly did Terry Ellis cease to manage Tull? In the 40 Years....DVD, it's suggested this happened in the late eighties but I think Terry has stated (on this forum) that he is still involved in Tull in some capacity, even today.
After Ellis quit (and did he quit?), did IA/Tull manage themselves? I know that IA is now managed by his son.

The current 50th Anniverary tour program notes that Terry Ellis and Chris Wright were managers from 1968 to 1978. I think that Ellis must have had some involvement with Tull well after that though as I remember watching a video where Dave Pegg and others talked about Ellis not liking the "Under Wraps' album which was released in 84.
I recently read an article where IA discusses managers and Jo Lustig in particular. I am sure it must be on this site but I am am struggling to find it. I will keep looking.
The 50th Anniversary program show that James Anderson is the agent for IA and he has been production manager and tour manager
I think that James Anderson is married to Terry Ellis's daughter..

Conchis, the "Songs from the Wood box set" has some information on this (page 8 of the box set). It says "By late 1976, with Terry Ellis needing to concentrate on the running of Chrysalis records, particularly in America, Jethro Tull has a new self proclaimed manager in the larger-than-life shape of Jo Lustig". The whole section is a bit big to copy but it goes on to say that IA found Lustig "loveable but often infuriating" and that Lustig got fired from every job he was ever in.
It notes that Lustig never had a contract with Tull and that "even in 1976/77, there wasn't really a role for Jo to play. It was suggested that he could call himself our manager, and he advertised loudly to this as fact but actually what he was doing was independent PR, organising interviews, etc.".
It is worth a look at this whole section on Lustig - one interesting comment is that "Undoubtedly Jo Lustig's greatest contribution to Tull was the gift to Ian Anderson of a 1973 book titled "Folklore, Myths and Legends of Britain" which gave IA the thoughts about "the elements of characters and stories that played out my songwriting for the Songs from the Wood album, which then carried on to the Heavy Horses album and even beyond that into Stormwatch album".
IA mentions that he did not see the need for a manager or tour manager even back in 1976. I guess though that Ellis would have maintained a close interest in Tull as manager of Chrysalis (and not Tull) especially as they were probably the biggest band in their label.

Thanks, stevep. It seems likely that Ellis did not suddenly cease his involvement with Tull, more that it faded out over a period, until he eventually told IA he 'wasn't going to take any more money' from Tull.

I love the dynastic Anderson/Ellis marriage. Big dowries. no ? Yes, I've thought about that. There's no way Terry Ellis could have seen the future when this scruffy Lancastrian herbert in an old coat showed up in his office in early 1968.
