Hello everyone, I decided to be away from the forum and almost all social networks until I've fully recovered from my back problems, and the computer is one of the things that doctors "banned" me, and although the final surgery will not be until September, could not ignore reporting the next convention. It will be the 15th consecutive and of course will not be the last, although each year is more difficult because almost all members and former members of Tull have already played in our convention, also become older and this year with the presence of Ian At the Festival Be Prog on July 10, things became much more complicated because the town hall of Gavá reserves us on July 10 every year or a approximate date that coincides with Saturday... Finally we got a good poster, with Clive Bunker playing with the band Lincoln Quartet that will play a very complete concert, a part of progressive rock and a second part of tribute to Jethro Tull, will be a great show with two batteries on stage and a great solo to close the performance. The second great guest is Saori Jo, this time with full band of musicians, the other time that she played in Tullianos left us all impressed and wanting more, this year apart from thanking them for accepting our conditions we will have the opportunity to enjoy a lot more, since in the first occasion many only knew her of its performances in the tour of Jethro Tull in 2010 and its songs "Fairy World" with Tull and its excellent version of "Witches Promise" Also we will count as always with the performances of a school of music (playing Tull songs of course) and Cristobal, Paco and friends doing Jethro Tull covers and we must add a band that is still unconfirmed. To be continued...

TULLIANOS 15TH ANNIVERSARY CONVENTION - GAVA, BARCELONA, SPAIN.
Just a quick word to recommend the Spanish Jethro Tull Convention to all here on the Forum. The guys running Tullianos always put on a really great show. They really are a top bunch of people who share a love of the music of Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull.If you have not been to Barcelona before you really should. It is a vibrant city, not expensive, great food great climate great people and the sandy beaches stretch for miles. Having been booked up with other stuff in early June the diary has been unexpectedly cleared so I will be packing my tooth brush and look forward to this year's Tullianos event. It would be brilliant to get a few of you guys out there. Cheers..Pat

Barcelona and the timing of the Convention is in the top three of my bucket list. Only problem is that the other bucket is not full of money.... yet.

I'd hoped to get to Barcelona but the fates have not been kind to me health wise so with one thing or another I must cry off. If I ever can get back on my feet, literally, I shall make every effort to attend.

Hello everyone, Sorry for the delay in doing a small review of the concert but this has been a tough week for me. I'm going to do a little revision of the convention, first as part of the organization and then as a spectator. This year has been very difficult since Ian's concert coincided with the date that the Council of Gavà (second week of July) reserves for us every year, we tried to make it as close as possible to this one, but everything turned against, the musicians with whom we had reached an agreement to play in the month of July could not come for the month of June, from this moment it was a race to adjust dates and musicians available, it has been very difficult and stressful but in the end when Saori took the stage, finished the nerves and everything worked perfectly. I want to thank all the sponsors and media including the Jethro Tull Forum for their help in promoting the concert, this year we have hardly made a month of publicity and only in Barcelona and Gava, despite this the auditorium presented a good entry, special mention for all the musicians and especially to Saori Jo as he lowered his cache as far as we could get, this deserves a million thanks and much more after seeing his performance, this year with a complete band unlike the first time that he came with an acoustic set (three people). Also thanks to Pat (patrick) from Cold Flame as last year with Martin, for the interview with Clive and the camera this year in charge of Juan Angel Guerra, I just acted as an intermediary, so thank you for the job well done!. The show began with the performance of Cristobal Vergara one of our members and habitual in the conventions with a set of covers of Jethro Tull, the party started well and we began to breathe more calm seeing that the people were approaching to the "Marc Grau Auditorium", followed the band 5:50 also from Barcelona and formed by some of our members who played a harder rock set and the atmosphere was increasing progressively. With the departure of Saori Jo and his band the "Marc Grau" was already practically full, and it was noticed that the people were waiting for Saori that was received with many applause that were rising in pitch as the concert progressed, I have to say That I was also impressed, despite knowing his music .... What a most impressive concert !, great! His music has evolved more than I can express, what band so united! There is a lot of work behind this group! What great musicians! And Saori is for me one of the best voices of folk rock today, it is a privilege to have it between us, hopefully my English was better to be able to express better what was the concert of Saori Jo, the public got up several times and Saori left the stage truly excited, hugged Albert, me, and several of the board members of Tullians, a success as I have rarely seen in our conventions. This year I worked mainly in the area of merchandasing since I took a chair to be more comfortable and I can assure that I received more than 25 requests for CDs of Saori, questions about who was and how to find their records, it was a crazy thing . Saori, how great you are !!! If you have the opportunity to go see her, do not miss it, she will not disappoint you. We have contacted the promoter who brought Ian and Martin to Barcelona to organize a concert in Barcelona, of course I will be there. To conclude Lincoln Quartet made a concert divided in two parts, the first of progressive rock playing songs of Genesis, Focus. PFM and other Big Bands of the 70s (approx 35 minutes), in general a great first part but without Clive... The second part already with Clive on stage came what we all expected and did not disappoint at all, started playing Tull songs of the early years when Clive was in the band, with two drummers, the duel of drummers and ended with the encore " Budapest "! (1 h and approx 30 min) Clive was great to the height of a great drummer and in his 70 years young man showed an enviable physical form, I prefer that you see the video that will explain better than I do. What more could you want? A great convention that had us worried until the musicians surged to the stage. It only remains to thank once again all the musicians and colleagues of organization for doing a work that far surpassed our expectations. Another year and the history of Tullianos has written a new chapter, but much less the last. Pat, Ian Anderson, Juan Angel and his wife, Martin Driver and Clive as you can see this is the usual convention environment.

I see that the photobucket plague has also infected my photos, I will upload them again to another site and replace them, for this reason I do not delete the post, as I think I have only crossed the border for a few megs, I'll try to delete some and I think that can save the rest. Well I have not forgotten the convention but as the Be Prog was recent I left the thread abandoned for a while and now I return with news. Pat has told me that the transcript of the interview with Clive Bunker is ready! and this week will make his publications, as you know Patrick is the leader of Cold Flame and apart from their songs, their publications are always very interesting so I ask you to be attentives. The interview will also be published in "A New Day" magazine, so the members of the forum will have a scoop. I love the relationship so good that has been established with Pat since his band was invited to play at our convention, I never tire of thanking him for being always willingness to help and make known Tullianos, so thanks again!

Saori Jo Live @ XV Tullianos Convention, 2017June 10th 2017 Tullianos Convention In Gavà, Catalonia. When the artist leaves the stage with tears in his eyes and kissing and hugging everyone who was waiting for her at the entrance of the backstage, and the audience is still standing applauding for a while is because something great has just happened, the magic of music invaded us all with his great performance! A good friend and very knowledgeable of good music, good critic, fan of Tull, but when something is wrong says it, I would say it is a hard critic, he told me after the Saori concert, "I needed to go to the WC with urgency, but I did not go until Saori's concert ended, because for time ago I did not enjoy so much." Saori Jo Band, here is the FULL CONCERT, Enjoy! Saori Jo setlist : Fellow traveller/Dolls Revolution/ Boogey Man/Tobis/ Fairy World/Stay/ Last/ Northernmost/ Bitter/ Doll Story/ The Witches Promise. Greetings one and all...it has taken a lot longer than expected partly due to technical issues but here at last is the interview I had with Clive Bunker last month during the Tullianos 15th Spanish Jethro Tull Convention in Gava Barcelona.
An Interview with Clive Bunker - Saturday June 10th 2017
As the main special guest at this year's 15th Spanish Jethro Tull Convention in Barcelona and with Jethro Tull only months away from celebrating their 50th anniversary, the opportunity to catch up with Tull's original legendary drummer and all round good guy Clive Bunker was just too good to miss. Finding a quiet area in the Hotel Olympic in Gava near Barcelona, Spain - base camp for Tullianos this year - proved more elusive than first thought but in between background noise and occasional distractions, Clive answered a whole range of questions from the early days right through to the here and now with honesty, integrity and good humour. We began with a few references to the early days.
PR.What are your recollections of the John Evan Band prior to you and Mick getting involved with Ian and Glenn ? CB: We went to see them at a local club in fact Mick went to see them first and then he said you should come along and see this band so the next time they came to the venue he said will you come and see this band - they're good so we went to see them and got to know them before they moved down to where we lived and didn't make it at that time which was when Mick spoke to Ian and Glenn about getting together and forming a blues band. PR: Mick recognised that there was something appealing about the band. CB: Oh yeah. They were a good band. A very good band. PR: Were you familiar with the move away from blues type songs that Ian was writing from lets say mid 1968 onwards prior to Mick no longer being part of the band. These songs would eventually surface on the Stand Up album ? CB: Yes. Mick just wanted to play blues. The songs that Mick was writing were just more blues songs and the songs that Ian was writing were getting more progressive I suppose you could say and we all preferred what Ian was writing and Mick just felt a bit out of it. PR: Do you think the songs Mick was writing at that time resurfaced a few months later as Blodwyn Pig songs ? CB: A couple of them did I think yeah but what I call the good songs of Blodwyn Pig were written by Mick with Jack Lancaster. PR: As Ian's song writing developed, did his music present more challenges for you as the drummer in the band ? CB: Yes. Yes it was a challenge and an interesting challenge because coming up with drum parts I had to actually get better and it had to be immediate. There were songs where I said to Ian that I could not think of a drum part. What do you want me to do ? One of the songs was definitely Song for Jeffrey and he just said ' just play dum didi dum didi dum and it will work ' which is exactly what I did - dum didi dum didi dum - but all the other stuff, it was a bit of a challenge and it worked out pretty good actually. PR: Reading about the band during that early period you get the impression that the element of challenge was really appreciated by all the band members. CB: Oh yes. PR: Following your departure from Jethro Tull in 1971, how long did you stay away from music and what prompted you to once more get behind a drum kit ? CB: I didn't actually...I mean that when I left Tull I never intended to ever play the drums. It was just that friends from school were forming a band and said you could be the drummer and then after that band split up, another band asked me to join and err after that things just kept on happening. I don't like the situation of being regarded as like a star. In Tull during the last year and a half it was pretty chaotic constantly touring and whilst in America, I met this lady and at the start of the last American tour in 1971, I said that after it was finished I would leave. If Barrie [ Barlow] can't do it or something, then give me a call and I will fill in until Barrie has got it together....and I never ever intended to play again. Then when Robin Trower phoned up about a year and a half later and said I've got this band together with Frankie Miller. PR: That was Jude ? CB: Yeah that was Jude and I thought - I've got to do this [laughs] and I picked up the sticks again. PR: You once did an interview in Melody Maker, under the title' I'll never forget what's his name' One of the quotes you made in that interview referred to you watching Jethro Tull perform 'A Passion Play' at Wembley in '73 and you felt very proud of the band. Did a part of you feel that you shouldn't have left the band ? CB: No...I never regretted leaving at all.The last album I did was Aqualung. Some of the songs Ian was getting together like ideas that came out later with Passion Play - well I like playing more rock n roll [ waves arms in the air] and 'dum dum dum' not so much the fiddly bits[ crosses arms with imagined drum stick hand movements]No I never regretted leaving. PR : From 1971/72/73 onwards you played with a lot of major artists some of which I have been fortunate enough to see with you behind the drum kit. Which of these artists/ bands post Tull have you found the most interesting to work with ? CB: [pause for concentration] Uli Jon Roth the German guitar player in the sense that he played classical stuff and not just the rock stuff that he did with The Scorpions.I got to play with him and other musicians and play lots of very different things so overall he was probably the best yeah. Cue commercial break...PR:I'm now going to shock you[ producing a copy of Clive's solo album 'Awakening' to loud groans and acknowledgement from Clive] CB :[composing himself with deep concentration] Martin Allcock who used to be with Fairport Convention , said that he liked the album - pity about the singer [ laughs all round] PR: Everyone has heard of Clive Bunker the drummer but what about Clive Bunker the singer songwriter. Back in 1998 with the help of several of your music friends and the support of Dave Rees and his team at A NEW DAY you released your solo album 'Awakening'. What are your memories of that project ? CB : I built a studio in my garden and really it was to try and move away from the experiences I had had in the studio where engineers would be saying something but what I heard was my drums. So I thought I could get a good drum sound myself and then I started playing a bit of guitar and a bit of this and that and then I think it was in conversation with Dave Rees that I said I had some songs none of them really complete - more ideas really and he said we could fit them onto a cd. I thought yeah why not so I finished the songs off and then [pause] unfortunately I sang on it [ more laughter] which was the worst idea. A lot of the words were very personal and it is very difficult to get someone in to sing and convey the meaning. [at this point I couldn't resist singing the chorus to 'Swayo' the first tune on Clive's album - cue more laughter all round] PR: Would you do another album ? CB: Err..no no. [shakes head] PR: You have performed at various Tull Conventions across Europe during the last few years. How do you feel about such events ? CB: I quite like them actually. Its amazing to be remembered by people because I was only in the band for what - 4 years and the band has stayed together for nearly 150 years so for people to remember me all this time later is quite an honour - fantastic really. PR: I guess these events have given you the opportunity of meeting new people leading to different things possibly outside of music. CB: Oh yeah. PR: Outside of music what keeps you busy ? CB : Lots of things really. When I left Tull, I did have quite a few business interests so they kept me busy initially. Nowadays I like to go hiking and things like that to keep myself fit because without fitness the ability to play the drums would be difficult. You need to do something to keep yourself fit so we go to Canada quite often especially around September when the bears return to the mountain slopes so I do lots of hiking. Its brilliant and I love it. PR: Although you were in Jethro Tull for 4 years, the band has carried on since then and you have played in various line ups featuring other members of Tull past and present. Do you still keep in contact with members / ex members of Jethro Tull ? CB: Yes but mainly the drummers...Doane Perry, Barrie Barlow...I was there at Barrie's a couple of months ago and with Eric Brookes the Tull tour manager. Eric now lives in America but whenever he comes over to England we get together. I meet Martin every now and again. I was going over to see Glenn in Hawaii just before he died so thats a bad one really. PR: Next year is the 50th anniversary of the release of 'This Was'. Along with many fans, I have been very impressed by the recently released Tull album booklet format remasters that Steven Wilson has been involved in. Whilst This Was has been remastered it has not yet had the booklet/Steven Wilson five star treatment. Are you aware of these new releases ? CB:Yes. PR: Have you got copies ? CB: No. PR: Err..I asked Martin[Barre] the same question last year and the answer he gave was the same. CB :Hmm [ nodding head] PR: Well...I think that it is the shared hope of a large number of Tull fans that, in recognition of 50 years of Jethro Tull that both This Was and Benefit would both receive the Steven Wilson remastered booklet form extended treatment. A fitting testament to those ground breaking albums. CB: [nodding and smiling] That would be good..that would be good. PR: We all know the value of Facebook in helping to sell, promote live music but having said that there are downsides to Facebook as well. In recent years there has been a problem that you have had to deal with of someone pretending to be you and causing you grief as a result. Can you comment on this problem ? CB: Yeah its not just me. A lot of people I have spoken to in the music business have had similar problems. Martin Barre did. He had someone calling himself Martin Barre on facebook but they eventually stopped. I just can't seem to stop this guy. We have an idea of where he might be based but we are not fully sure. We know he speaks Spanish but is proving elusive. Facebook don't want to know about it. There's not a lot more we can do about it. We have all seen the government try to do something about facebook, twitter and all that but its all about money, money, money...but [shrugs]. I don't go on the computer so if anybody - a lot of people send me stuff which my friend has downloaded and many things are from people that I know but there appears to be very little I can do about it. There you go..when they started doing all this computer stuff they talked about the net or the web and it all seemed [waves arms around shaking his head] so I thought forget it I don't want to know. PR: Lets finish off then on a positive note. Here we are in 2017 and another gig this evening doing a Tullianos show with Lincoln Quartet. I know you have worked with Lincoln before. Can you tell us a little about him, about the band and what can we expect from tonight's show. CB: The band plays Tull tunes but they're not professionals playing the stuff all the time. It's just a good laugh and they are all very good friends of mine. One of the really good things, not here in Spain but when we play [in the same format] in Italy we stay together for a few days , have good meals and socialize. It's just good good good fun. PR: And if it is not good fun then it's not worth doing. CB: Exactly. PR: Clive..it has been a real pleasure. CB: And for me too.
With that, Clive left the Hotel to spend a few minutes rehearsing with Saori Jo having agreed a few hours earlier to join the band on one of their songs later that same evening at the Tullianos concert prior to his performance with the Lincoln Quartet. Throughout the weekend, Clive gave his time freely to fans despite the tight schedule. Never one to hog the limelight, nevertheless his attendance and participation both on and off stage was deeply appreciated by all and I think he really did quite enjoy himself and found the whole thing rather good fun. What a fitting testimony then for Clive and the rest of the original band members if EMI/ Universal do decide to bring out the definitive This Was collection in booklet form with the five star Steven Wilson treatment as a 50th Anniversary release. Oh yes and lets have Benefit as well please...

You have to hand it to those ever enthusiastic Tullianos good guys in Spain. They put on a wonderful annual event every year in Barcelona that brings people together from all across Europe united by their love of the music of Jethro Tull. They do so on almost a zero budget with no grants or similar from arts councils or local council offices. They succeed in finding strong line ups each year featuring members of the Jethro Tull 'family' as well as other relevant acts and when things start to go pear shaped they just roll their sleeves up and do their utmost to ensure that things will still run clockwork over the weekend. Such was the case at this year's Tullianos 15th Tull Convention weekend in Gava, Barcelona which due to a number of unfortunate circumstances had to have date changes not once but twice in the run up to the event. Inevitably this affected the availability of several of the planned guests as well as some of the regular committee members and even the normal hotel HQ. That the Convention took place at all is a real credit to the Spanish fan club team but as they say...the show must go on ... and it certainly did and as per usual in glorious sunshine.
To wax lyrical about this year's event would be almost to repeat my write up of last year's convention headlined by Martin Barre and his band which really was a terrific Convention. Yet Tullianos really do put on a great annual event which in my view must rank as one of the best Tull related events you could attend anywhere round the world. If you have ever fancied travelling to Barcelona then timing your trip with a Tullianos event has to be a must.
Headlining this year was none other than original Tull drumming legend Clive Bunker together with his Italian friends - Lincoln Quartet - strangely enough a quintet on this occasion. In addition we had the wonderful Saori Jo and her band all the way from Strasbourg in France. Warm up acts were local Spanish rock n roll band 5:50 and starting proceedings, albeit briefly, Madrid based singer/ guitarist and regular opening act for these events, Cristobal, performing a very short solo set of Tull songs. Special mention must go to Saori Jo [keyboards/vocals] and her band...Miguel Ruiz on lead and acoustic guitars, Katia Jacob on bass guitar/ vocals and drummer Gregoire Galichet. Tull fans may remember France's answer to Kate Bush and her guitarist Miguel Ruiz supporting Tull on their UK tour a few years ago. Since then she has maintained links with Ian Anderson and other Tull members and has performed on several occasions for Tullianos. Now with a full band Saori Jo began with one of her more popular numbers 'Fellow Traveller' before launching into both old and newer original material. To say that the band was a revelation was probably an understatement. A stunning set that displayed sheer professionalism, complete control and an ability to love their every minute on stage. Many of the songs played were original tunes taken from her album 'Home 2:12 Am' but it was a pleasant surprise to hear this material played by a full band and yes she did play a very haunting version of Witches Promise to roars from the crowd. Saori Jo rocked and the audience loved every minute of it. Definitely not an easy act to follow but the Italian based part time Tull tribute band Lincoln Quartet featuring Clive Bunker seized the initiative throwing caution to the wind despite the lateness of the hour. Starting off with a number of prog rock instrumental pieces which displayed their undoubted talents, the band comprising Lincoln Veronese [ vocals/guitar] Giacomo Lelli [ flute] Manuel Smamiotto [drums] Andrea De Nardi [ keyboards] Iacopo Gobbato [ bass] then effortlessly moved up a gear belting out some old and not so old classic Tull material driven on by the power house drumming of Clive Bunker in a two hour show that kept everyone happy. Lincoln and the rest of the band played confidently able to add the odd surprise here and there such as top notch versions of Hunting Girl and an abbreviated Rocks on the Road. It was great to see Clive yet again dominant behind the kit - a true star in every sense of the word. Hard to believe that next year will be the 50th anniversary of This Was. Yet Clive has not lost any of his enthusiasm or musical prowess in performing some of the music he loves so at the risk of repeating myself - Come on EMI lets have a new deluxe booklet Steven Wilson edition of This Was - do it for Clive...oh yeah and for Mick.
As Tullianos busy themselves for next year's 16th annual Spanish Convention, all that is left for me to say is...see you next year !!! There is a rather dodgy rumour going round at the moment that Guinness might be available on draught there next year to entice various members of the A NEW DAY fraternity. Like I said it is maybe just a dodgy rumour.
