I was talking to my sister tonight and she mentioned that she had never heard any Jethro Tull, not even one song. She is 57 and her music taste is mostly pop, though she does like Bryan Adams and the Foo Fighters. I said I would do her a cd of Tull songs for her and I need some help picking which ones, nothing too heavy, i was thinking of the following:
Living In The Past Locomotive Breath Sweet Dream Bungle In The Jungle Thick As A Brick The Witch's Promise
Any suggestions would be appreciated, it is so hard to pick 6 songs that show Tull at their best?

Not a list as such, but Velvet Green started me on my Tull journey way back in '78 as a snotty nosed teenager!
Mrs Zob, who is not a Tull fan as such, loves El Nino..
And any (not too heavy) list for me would have to include Reasons for Waiting and The Waking Edge. If I could sneak Mountain Men in there, then I would as well - and Dun Ringill. Where do you stop..!!!

Great thread! My fire-proof, sure-fire (!) list of Six Tracks for the Tull-less, specifically designed to turn 'normal' people away from the path of ignorance, would be:
- Teacher (US version) - A New Day Yesterday - Minstrel in the Gallery (incidentally, the one that recruited me, back in '75) - We Used to Know - Hunting Girl - Steel Monkey
But for a pop fan, I'd amend that to:
- Living in the Past - Steel Monkey - Bends Like a Willow - Fylingdale Flyer - Taxi Grab - Another Christmas Song ('Rock Island' version)
Good luck!

I think Maddog's list is EXACTLY right except I would swap Crossfire for Jump Start.

Thanks for all your suggestions. This is going to be tough. I love Teacher, Reasons for waiting, Look into the sun etc. Of course a few have been mentioned that I do not know cos I haven't got round to them yet but I will look them up.

It's actually really hard now to imagine listening to any Tull song with totally fresh ears, and to evaluate how a complete newbie might react to it! I suppose my suggestions revolved around strong, simple hooks and general 'up-beatness'.
My memory (and this relates to your post-TAAB albums thread too) is that it generally took a few listens to get to grips with a new collection of Tull songs, not least because there was so much breadth and depth in every new album. You knew you were listening to something amazing, but weren't quite sure (yet) precisely WHY it was amazing. I recall 'Songs' being pretty immediate, though - a real 'wow!' moment the first time I ever played that one! In later years, the 'magic' of some of the albums never came within reach - no matter how often I played 'Rock Island' and 'Catfish', in particular, they never cast their glow on me.
