Ian Anderson: “Christmas is not exclusive, it embraces all” LINKEvery year, just before Christmas, Ian Anderson – driving force behind progressive rock legends Jethro Tull, who celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2018 – takes his band on a most unusual tour. They perform Christmas-themed music at cathedrals and churches up and down the country, and donate all the proceeds to the upkeep of the building in which they are playing. This year, he will be bringing the show to Peterborough Cathedral for the first time. Toby Venables talked to the man about his music, what Christmas means to him and the show’s surprise guests...

I'm really looking forward to tonight's concert and just hope I can get a decent seat I'm taking my compact camera but, if they say "no photographs" I'll abide by the rule. I must admit, where there's no cameras and mobile phones waving about at concerts it seems to make it more special.

Hopefully you will have no problem finding a good seat Bunkerfan. Really looking forward to the concert tonight though not quite sure what to expect as it is my first Tull Xmas concert. We have 6 of us going tonight and it will be their first experience of seeing IA & co for 4 of the others.

Just back after tonight's concert. Will write a review in the morning but I thought the concert was excellent. It was, not surprisingly, different from a normal Tull concert but great all the same. Surprise of the night for me was that they performed Solstice Bells - not sure if they have performed that live before but it was the first time I have heard it live. IA also sang Greg Lake's " I believe in a Father Christmas and I thought he did a good job on it.

Yes Steve, a great concert and like you I don't think I've heard Solstice Bells live before and I've never really noticed what a complex piece of music it is. More later when I've got the Grandchildren "packed off to school", done the weekly shop and put up the Christmas decorations. Before the concert began............

After a hectic day for me yesterday here's a short review of the Durham Cathedral Concert........... The concert began by an introduction from The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, the well spoken Dean of Durham. Who gave a potted history of Durham Cathedral. He was followed on stage by Reverend George Pitcher who was dressed all in black including top hat and Cod Piece. Yes a Vicar wearing a Cod Piece! He also carried a thick walking cane which he threatened to use against anyone caught taking photo's or video's and it worked. He then introduced the band. The set list at the bottom was changed slightly with the inclusion of 'Pastime in Good Company', 'I believe in Father Christmas', and 'Solstice Bells'.The only downside for me was 'Dun Ringill' being dropped. It was a great night for everyone in the packed Cathedral and the highlights for me were the Cathedral Choir singing ''Gaudete' and Ian Anderson an Co. playing 'Another Christmas Song', Pastime with Good Company', I Believe in Father Christmas', the brilliant Florian with'Toccta and Fugue' with an intro from the magnificent Cathedral Organ played by Jason Lowe and surprisingly for me,'Locomotive Breath' which I tend to be a little tired of but it was truly fantastic and a great way to end the show! Thank you Ian, John, Scott and David for a memorable night.

Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull play festive gig for Bradford Cathedral building fund LINK A PROG rock legend played a concert in the stunning surroundings of Bradford Cathedral to raise funds for the building. Ian Anderson, of of Jethro Tull, performed The Christmas Jethro Tull concert in the packed Cathedral last night. Def Leppard's Joe Elliott also appeared as a guest musician. Mr Anderson is known to play cathedrals around the country and donate the takings to help with their upkeep. Jethro Tull, who first formed in the 1960s, have sold more than 60 million albums, and are considered one of the most important and influential prog rock bands. Last night's concern mixed Tull classics with Christmas carols. Mr Anderson, whose one-legged, flute playing pose has become an iconic rock image, has said he enjoys the challenge of playing cathedrals and their “cavernous spaces”.
Cathedral spokeswoman Sandra Howard said: "It went really, really well. The band themselves said that they were really pleased and Bradford had given a really warm welcome." She said that people had been generous, with a number of donations left in the retiring collection. The cathedral's own choristers took part in the concert, as well as the Bradford Citadel Salvation Army band.Speaking earlier in the year about the concert, The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford, said: “In the past few years we have had to raise something like three quarters of a million pounds to make sure the building is kept in good condition, and that is not something that ever stops.
“Really what they are doing is giving us a massive Christmas gift, all the money will go towards helping the Cathedral pay its way, and for that we are incredibly grateful to him."
Previous Christmases have seen the band play Lincoln, Worcester and Salisbury Cathedrals. As well as Bradford, they will also play Durham Cathedral this Christmas.

Not sure about the modern Christ on the Cross.
It looked like great concerts - glad everyone enjoyed it.

Was the set list similar to Durham in Peterborough and Bradford? Us Tull fans are so lucky to be able to see our favourite band in settings like this. I talked to a few folk who attended the Durham concert and they said they really enjoyed the performance here. I think a percentage of the crowd did not know much of Tull music so it helped that much of the set list were known Christmas songs. A great night.. and George Pitcher was an interesting character. Journalist, author and cleric who does a mean IA impression.
