I took myself off to Durham Cathedral today to try and get some info on Ian's Christmas Concert. I spoke to a very pleasant young lady who was at a desk and asked if she had any information on the concert by Ian Anderson in December and she looked at her computer and said " Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull?? Wow! I can't believe he's coming here, I will definitely be going to that show!" Bunkerfan was hoping for a free poster or some sort of flyer but at least I made that young lady happy. I took these photo's while I was there and I hope the scaffold's down before Ian gets there. The Tower looks a bit like a cut finger with a plaster on.

No tickets or anything else about the concert from the Cathedral staff but while I was there I sat in the 5th pew from the front which had extra legroom plus a great view.

www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/15171326.Prog_rock_legends_to_play_Christmas_concert_at_Cathedral/?ref=eblnIan Anderson and Jethro Tull to play festive gig for Bradford Cathedral building fund22 March A PROG rock legend will play a concert in Bradford Cathedral this Christmas to raise funds for the building. Ian Anderson, of Jethro Tull, will be performing The Christmas Jethro Tull concert in the Cathedral on Friday, December 15.Although not a Christian himself, Mr Anderson is known to play cathedrals around the country, and donate the takings to them to help with their upkeep. Jethro Tull, who first formed in the 1960s, have sold more than 60 million albums, and are considered one of the most important and influential prog rock bands. The Bradford concert will mix Tull classics with Christmas carols. Mr Anderson, whose one-legged, flute playing pose has become an iconic rock image, says he enjoys the challenge of playing cathedrals and their “cavernous spaces”. He added: “Whether your Christmas is a secular affair of gift-giving and family togetherness or a more worshipful recognition of one of the two biggest days in the Christian calendar, join us for some uplifting Christmas spirit, music, readings and maybe even a prayer or two.” Despite being a non-believer, the prog rock hero says he has a “huge affinity for the deeds and traditions” of Christianity. He added: “The bringing together of people of all backgrounds, cultures and faiths in this way is possible, perhaps, only under the auspices of modern Christianity, especially the Anglican Church. So, if I can help to draw people in to these beautiful and historic buildings to savour just a little of the spirit of Christmas, it seems like a worthwhile effort.” The Very Reverend Jerry Lepine, Dean of Bradford, said: “He has a real feel for the financial burden of keeping these buildings going, and also their heritage. He loves playing gigs in these kinds of places at Christmas. “Really what they are doing is giving us a massive Christmas gift, all the money will go towards helping the Cathedral pay its way, and for that we are incredibly grateful to him. “In the past few years we have had to raise something like three quarters of a million pounds to make sure the building is kept in good condition, and that is not something that ever stops. “Cathedrals across the country tend to be hosting a lot more concerts, including secular ones.” Previous Christmases have seen the band play Lincoln, Worcester and Sailsbury Cathedrals. As well as Bradford, they will also play Durham Cathedral this Christmas. For tickets, visit bradford-cathedral.ticketlight.co.uk

www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/Bradford Cathedral to hold open day on Saturday, June 10
Chris Young LINK
PEOPLE have been invited to see how Bradford Cathedral is working to become a “centre of excellence” for music. The Cathedral is holding an open day on Saturday, June 10, where visitors will be able to listen to, and learn about, the Cathedral’s organ and its prestigious choir amongst other activities. The Cathedral recently welcomed a new director of music, Alex Berry, Canon Precentor the Reverend Canon Paul Maybury and assistant director of music Jon Payne, who all hope to cement its reputation as a leading music centre, and increase the profile of its Cathedral choir. The choir supported singer Aled Jones when he brought his Cathedral Tour to Bradford last year and they have sung for the BBC’s Songs of Praise programme, and for Sunday Worship and Christmas Carols on BBC Radio 4. They will also be singing when Ian Anderson Brings his Jethro Tull tour to the Cathedral this Christmas.
They also performed at a vigil held for the Manchester bombing victims on Tuesday night. The choristers come from schools across the district. Fourteen-year-old head chorister Zachary Smith last year sang at a concert in St Paul’s Cathedral. The unique concert brought choristers from 61 of the nation’s cathedrals and colleges to sing with St Paul’s Choir to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the Friends of Cathedral Music. A CD from the concert, Jubilate, was released earlier this year and went straight to the top of the Classic chart. At 27, Mr Berry is the youngest Cathedral organist in any Anglican cathedral in the country. He said of the cathedral choir: “We really want to create a fantastic musical education for the children and young people of the district. It provides them with opportunities they can’t get in any other part of Bradford. “Bradford Cathedral Choir is getting an increasingly good reputation. All cathedral choirs are held in a certain regard, and the Bradford choir is really going places. They really hold their own.” The open day, from noon until 4pm, will see Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf played on the organ, as well as talks on the ongoing organ restoration project and a “chorister masterclass”.

Been to Durham Cathedral this morning and bought my tickets A very helpful young lady asked if I needed concessions and I said "well, we're both over sixty. Does that count?" She knocked me £8 off the tickets. I also used my bus pass to get there and back so it does pay to be old after all.

That "very helpful young lady" also gave me a good tip. As there are no seat numbers and your tickets are for a section in the Cathedral she told me the doors open at 18.30 so the sooner you get in the better the seat you'll get.

Ian Anderson with The Christmas Jethro Tull LINK Peterborough Cathedral Saturday 16 December 2017 19:30 - 22:30 Rock legend Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull will be performing The Christmas Jethro Tull concert at Peterborough CathedralIan says of the show, “Whether your Christmas is a secular affair of gift-giving and family togetherness or a more worshipful recognition of one of the two biggest days in the Christian calendar, join us for some uplifting Christmas spirit, music, readings and maybe even a prayer or two."
The self-professed non-believer nonetheless claims a huge affinity for the deeds and traditions of Christianity. In his support for the both the religion and the actual places of worship, he performs most years in our great cathedrals and churches - and a few little ones too!
“The bringing together of people of all backgrounds, cultures and faiths in this way is possible, perhaps, only under the auspices of modern Christianity, especially the Anglican Church. So, if I can help to draw people in to these beautiful and historic buildings to savour just a little of the spirit of Christmas, it seems like a worthwhile effort.
“100% of the sales of tickets go to the upkeep of the buildings and, perhaps, also in support of the musical liturgy of the cathedral. I try to balance the festive time of year in song with a few of the elements of an old-fashioned carol service. All delivered with good humour and good cheer. Grace me and, hopefully, a few special guests with your presence for some of the best-known repertoire of Jethro Tull and a few snippets of seasonal traditional church and Classical music.”Tickets: Ticket details for this concert are currently being finalised.
