This thread is inspired by Budding Stately Hero and his comments about some of the lyrics on Thick As A Brick. That we can learn from Andersons lyrics, and this is what this thread is about.
"The long road is a rainbow and the pot of gold lies there. So slip the chain and I'm off again --- You'll find me everywhere. I'm a Rover." - Ian Anderson
I interpret the above as being a call for action. To do what makes you happy, and to cut of the things that don't make you happy. To find a way out, in the face of the daily, challenges of basic human life. "So slip the chain and I'm off again..." Tells us that nobody is entirely free... There is always something that is holding us back. Someone has the chain, but if we try to escape once in a while we just might make it...
And live with an positive attitude. Have faith and hope. "The long road is a rainbow, and the pot of gold lies there..." The gold is somewhere, out there, and if we seek it, we just might find it.

'It's only the giving....' 'life's a long song...' 'and i find, given time, i can bend like a willow....' 'if things had turned out, well, just plain different....'

'I lie in sweat, cry others' tears and write a letter to my Mum, my wife, my God unheard, unseen, Who never thinks to intervene'
'You'll be praying till next Thursday to all the gods that you can count'

"Unbridled passion, I took the bit in my teeth"
Best thing Ian taught me. The wife thinks so, too

"Be sure to leave your underpants, with someone you can trust." - Ian Anderson There must be something to learn here... Trust... Who do we trust? Not everyone... and those we trust may not be trustworthy... and why? Why should we leave our underpants with anyone? The risk is simply too high... Is Anderson indirectly saying that some people can be trusted? Anyway... It's also funny... How many sick things can be done with your underpants, I mean, don't even think about it, so once again Ian is in pursued of a very delicate problem... or is it a warning? Don't show them where you are vulnerable, or put yourself in a vulnerable position when it comes to your fellow man...

Being able to write in four lines what other composers would need four verses
"Old Black Cat"
Padded about in furry slippers. Didn’t make any special friends. He played it cool with wide-eyed innocence, Receiving gladly what the good Lord sends.

"The long road is a rainbow and the pot of gold lies there. So slip the chain and I'm off again. You'll find me everywhere. 'Cause I'm a Rover." Ian Anderson, taken from the song Rover
What a great concept... You'll never know what you'll find if you go in search of it... Walk this life with a positive attitude, and use powerful and positive metaphors to guide you... Be free and courageous, and escape whenever you can... Well, something like that... Nothing is easy...

Crumbs on the breakfast table. And a million other little things to spoil my day. Now how about a little light music to chase it all away?
