Beautiful post and tribute John. Thanks Patti. I did try to do my bit today by ringing the Church bells on the hour throughout this afternoon but the bell ringing didn't go to plan. The first hour we rang them was OK because a bloke set the bells off for us and we just carried on. The hours that followed were a disaster as none of us knew how to start the bells off. So that's the end of campanology for me. The Church had an exhibition to mark 100 years since the end of WW1 and these letters were among the exhibits. Brave men from where I live and they certainly left a lump in my throat.

I think campanology is a lovely pursuit not that I've tried it myself but if I was you - I'd keep practising. Those letters really bring it home. It might be a hundred years ago but they were family and so young and put into an awful situation. You and the church did them proud. Well done.
