JJ JOINS GUITARIST MARTIN BARRE FOR USA EAST COAST TOUR LINK 1 Salute to Steve Schwab ROCKIN' @ Hinman Auditorium in Bonita Springs! LINK 2 Hey Jim! Yes I'm going to see Martin on March 2nd. Front row seats. Should be a good show. I remember the Catfish Rising tour and a bunch of us were sitting around the table having dinner backstage. Doane asks me a question. "Why do you fans come to multiple shows?" "It's the same show?" I said "because it's Tull!" The rest of the band laughed, he said "I don't get it am I missing something?" I said "you don't get it. You see no other person or person put on a better show that you guys thanks to Ian Anderson".. "You get your moneys worth. Each album is different. It plays out like that Monty Python skit. And now for something completely different and every album is filled with good songs. Not one or two. Who else does that? Anyway, hoping to meet him and get an autograph. LINK 3

thebradentontimes.com/interview-jethro-tulls-martin-barre-p18203-133.htmInterview: Jethro Tull's Martin BarreDennis Maley•Thursday, Mar 02, 2017 BRADENTON — Guitar icon Martin Barre of the legendary rock band Jethro Tull will perform at Ace's Live in West Bradenton on Sunday night. I had an opportunity to speak with the Grammy Award-winning artist this week, while he and his band were on a break from a few days of rehearsals in Miami before kicking off the tour. I was only around six or seven years old when I discovered my dad's impressive vinyl collection in the basement of our family home. Included, were copies of early Tull classics Aqualung and Thick as a Brick. Jethro Tull might be best remembered as that British band that somehow managed to incorporate a flute into hard-driving '70s prog rock, but from the opening chords of Aqualung's title track, it was always the guitar that got my attention. Barre's solo on that track has become an almost mythical piece of rock lore, the holy grail being able to say you've heard it live. Fans who come out on Sunday will enter that distinct circle. TBT: In addition to your work with Tull, you've had a prodigious solo career. What can music fans expect of the setlist on Sunday? MB: We like to keep it at about a 50/50 mix. We do a lot of the early Tull stuff, which is kind of guitar heavy, so we can have a lot of fun with it by beefing it up a bit and putting a new spin on it. Then we do a bit of stuff from my solo albums, and there's always a few surprises thrown in as well. We'll do a song or two by the Beatles, where we really add a lot on the guitar side and make it a little heavier. TBT: On your latest studio album, Back to Steel, there's a very interesting version of Eleanor Rigby. What does it take in your opinion to due justice to someone elese’s track, or make it your own, especially when it's such a famous piece? MB: Well, we really want to do our own thing with it. I would never do a cover straight, and sometimes there are songs that you can't really change, but there are other ones that you can really have fun with and give the audience something quite different but still true to the original, and that's what I really look for. TBT: You've been playing guitar for a very long time, and you still manage to put out new music that's fresh and inventive. Where do you find the inspiration for moving your sound forward these days? MB: I'm really just a lover of music, and there's so much great stuff out there right now, and a lot of it really inspires me. But I'm also really into classical music, and sometimes I'll be listening to a classical piece and fall in love with the melody, and draw inspiration from that as well. I’ve found that when you’re surrounded by music, always playing and always listening, the inspiration will come, and it will come from a variety of places. TBT: You've played on some of the biggest stages in music, and in front of truly massive crowds. What's it like when you get to play a small, intimate venue like Ace's? Well what we do doesn't change in the sense that we're always giving it 100 percent for the audience, no matter what size it is. There's certainly an energy that's quite amazing when you're playing a big festival and there are that many people in the crowd, but you often can't see past the front row of faces. Everything's dark and you're sort of pretending as you look out beyond that first row (laughs). Then you get into the smaller venues, and it's really nice to have the audience that close where you can really connect with them in a unique way. We've even done very small acoustic shows, where the audience is maybe only 50 people, and then there are different things to consider because the acoustics are such that you can literally hear a pin drop, so every note has really got to be perfect. So ideally, we like to do a blend of all of them, but the smaller ones like Ace's are really nice because of that interaction with the audience. Sunday’s show is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 in advance, $45 the day of the show. Ace's Live is located at 4343 Palma Sola Blvd in Bradenton.

kawarthanow.com/2017/03/07/market-hall-march-april-2017/What’s coming up at Peterborough’s Market Hall this springFeaturing pop opera, mentalism magic, classic American and British rock, and a double shot of blues By Bruce Head - Published March 7, 2017 Market Hall presents Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre Band on April 11 at 8 p.m.Former Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre (photo: Martin Barre)While you may not know Martin Barre by name or face, if you’re a fan of the music of classic British rock band Jethro Tull, you are most familiar with his talent. The guitarist joined Jethro Tull for its second album Stand Up in 1969 and, with Ian Anderson, anchored the band’s progressive sound over the next 45 years. But it was Barre’s contribution to the album Aqualung — his work on the title track has been voted among the top rock guitar solos of all time by a number of music industry magazines — that he remains best known for. Barre also played flute and mandolin with Jethro Tull, again adding to the band’s trademark sound that brought it a Grammy Award and album sales of more than 60 million. If he wasn’t busy enough, Barre launched a solo career in the early 1990s and subsequently recorded four albums, the latest being 2015’s Back To Steel. Market Hall Performing Arts Centre presents Barre April 11 at 8 p.m. as part of as extensive tour of Canada and the United States. Joining him will be singer Dan Crisp, drummer George Lindsay and bassist Alan Thomson. Expect a healthy dose of signature Jethro Tull songs as well as performances of Barre’s solo work. Tickets are $35 and are available from the box office at Market Hall (140 Charlotte St., Peterborough), by phone at 705-749-1146 or online at www.markethall.org. Tickets for Row C and Tables 8 and 18 are also available (cash only) at Moondance (425 George St., Peterborough, 705-742-9425). Cabaret-style table seating is available for $30 while VIP table seats cost $75 and include a meet-and-greet with Barre, complimentary refreshments, and a signed poster.

Very cool. It's great how Martin Barre, at this stage in his career, has the willingness and respect and trust with his fans, to use a sort of punk/ DIY/ Fugazi business model. I'm gonna round up everyone I can to give him an enthusiastic welcome in the SF Bay Area next September.

NEW DAY: MARTIN BARRE IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LOVING LIVING IN THE PRESENT BILL KOPP on March 11, 2017 at 1:53 pm Ask most people who the leader of Jethro Tull was, and they say, “Why, Mr. Tull, of course!” No, that’s Ian Anderson you’re thinking of. But the mainstay of that group alongside the flutist/singer was ace guitarist Martin Barre. On all but the first of the band’s twenty-plus albums, it’s Barre’s fretwork that you’ll hear. With the disbanding of Jethro Tull in 2013, Barre has focused more intently on his solo career. But a Martin Barre solo tour isn’t one of those “older guy with an acoustic” shows where you get quiet readings of the back catalog. No, Barre is a fiery guitarist in a blues-rock mode, and he’s touring with a full band.
The tour – which comes to Smith’s Old Bar on March 15 – features tunes from Barre’s new album, Back to Steel, alongside select re-imagined classics from the Jethro Tull songbook. Back to Steel includes a new reading of “Skating Away (on the Thin Ice of a New Day),” a tune that originally appeared on Jethro Tull’s 1974 War Child LP. Barre’s arrangement strikes a balance between remaining faithful to the Tull version and offering up something new. And on his concert tour, Barre leads his band through some other reinvented songs from his Jethro Tull years. “I’m looking for a song that I can do something with,” he says. “And very often it’s a song that didn’t [originally] have lots of guitar in it. That gives me a sort of whole different place to go. And these really work live; they have a lot of energy.”
The band’s set sometimes includes new versions of “Sweet Dream” (from 1978’s Bursting Out), and two tunes from 1969’s Stand Up, Jethro Tull’s second album (and the first to feature Barre on guitar), “New Day Yesterday” and “Fat Man.” Barre characterizes his arrangement of that last title as “quite rock ‘n’ roll.” His approach to arranging a Tull song is deceptively simple: “You deconstruct [the song] but keep the basic melody intact. I like music to be clever, to be a little bit complicated. But I don’t want it to sound complicated.”
Barre began his professional career as a musician in the mid-to-late 1960s (he recorded some early sides with a then-unknown Elton John), and joined Jethro Tull in 1968. But it wasn’t until the early 1990s that he began recording and releasing solo albums; with the regular schedule of Tull album releases and world tours, there simply wasn’t time to focus on a solo career. In more recent years, Ian Anderson has wound down activities for his band, and in the 21st century, Barre is busy with that long-delayed solo career.
“I never really had the time for it in the days with Tull; the schedule was so punishing; really full-on. If we ever got a few weeks off anywhere, I just wanted to relax.”
Only in the 1980s did Barre begin writing music. Back to Steel is his seventh solo album.
“I started to learn very late, but maybe that’s a good thing. I was thinking, ‘Wow, this is great. I’m really inventing my career as a musician.’ And I’ve been happy – really, really happy – ever since.” And even now, he says, “I still feel very much like I haven’t peaked. I have a lot more to go, and I’m going to get better and better.” More of this interview on Stomp and Stammer LINK

Interview with Martin Barre of Jethro Tull by Garret K. WoodwardKnown as one of the all-time iconic guitarists in rock-n-roll history, Martin Barre became world-renowned when he joined legendary act Jethro Tull in 1968. And for the better part of half a century, Barre's hands played some of the most recognizable guitar solos in rock music, with "Aqualung," "Cross-Eyed Mary" and "Locomotive Breath" rising to the top, beloved by fans and critics alike. Currently on tour with his solo band, Barre is finding a rebirth at age 70, onstage and off. Interview conducted by Garret K. Woodward, features editor for The Smoky Mountain News, on March 14, 2017. www.smokymountainnews.com
