Meanwhile the man with the flute is well over 50 years and has reached a respectable Rockeralter. Indispensable is his music to this day: The mixture of British folklore, classic and rock'n'roll also comes to the audience well 30 years after the founding of Jethro Tull. The band had a breakthrough with "Aqualung" at the beginning of the 1970s. Since then, Ian Anderson has been touring the world of music in an ever-changing way, and continues to impress with great musical professionalism.

www.northernstar.com.au/news/jethro-tull-is-back-to-bluesfest/3117545/Jethro Tull is getting ready for Bluesfest 2017Javier Encalada | 2nd Dec 2016 11:45 AM JETHRO Tull is a British rock group, formed in Luton, Bedfordshire, in December 1967.Initially playing blues rock, the band soon developed its sound to incorporate elements of British folk music and hard rock to forge a progressive rock signature. The band, led by vocalist / flutist / guitarist Ian Anderson, first achieved commercial success in 1969, with the folk-tinged blues album Stand Up, which reached No. 1 in the UK charts, and they toured regularly in the UK and the US. With sales of more than 60 million albums worldwide, and 11 gold and five platinum albums among them, the band has been described by Rolling Stone magazine as "one of the most commercially successful and eccentric progressive rock bands". We had a chat to Ian Anderson ahead of their Bluesfest 2017 show. What can we expect from your Bluesfest show in 2017?The Best of Jethro Tull, a selection of landmark songs from 1968 through to 2016 with an emphasis on the material from the 1970s. It is a multi-act festival so no sound check - just a wing and a prayer and with the benefit of knowing what a festival crowd want. Not an intellectual challenge but a well-paced set of generally "up" repertoire to keep things moving. Different to folk rock and electronic rock, progressive rock is not the same as it was in 1969 when the band reached notoriety, do you think progressive rock still exists today? If so, how much has it changed?Yes, it still exists. Indeed, like the resurgence of vinyl, there is a growing, if slightly retro trend to more musical and lyrical complexity. The newer prog bands usually have a much younger audience: Teens and early twenties, which balances nicely with the older Classic Rock and Progressive Rock crowd more familiar with our music. So we find that, in places like Latin America, Spain and Italy for example, that the our audiences these days span two or even three generations. Churches seem to be an important place in your music career. Has your experience with God, religion and churches as places of music changed over the years?I am quite at home in the Christian church as a performer. As a worshipper, no. I am a pragmatic soul. I tend to think in terms of possibilities and even probabilities as regard the spiritual world rather than essential faith and prayer. But I am a huge supporter of Christianity and its places of worship. To be a good paleontologist, you don't necessarily have to have sharp pointy teeth and a long scaly tail. Will you have any new music you may want to perform for us next year?During our tours in Australia and NZ we will perform two or three newer pieces dating from 2012 through to 2016. Depends on how long the aging bladders out there need for a pee-break. We even include a short drum solo for those capable of running out for just a quick squirt. Service with a smile. Jethro Tull will be performing at Bluesfest 2017, Tyagarah, on Easter Sunday, April 16.

au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/entertainment/a/33432078/jethro-tulls-anchorman-on-50-years-of-rocking-the-flute/Simon Collins - The West Australian on December 7, 2016, 6:32 am Jethro Tull veteran looks to futureWhile a self-confessed party pooper and old fuddy-duddy, Jethro Tull honcho Ian Anderson can take some responsibility for inspiring Anchorman’s jazz-flute exponent Ron Burgundy. The 69-year-old flautist, guitarist and singer denies the charge, citing late White House press secretary Tony Snow as the source for Will Ferrell’s comic creation. “Tony was an arch Republican but a hell of a nice guy,” Anderson says from his home in England’s West Country. The prog-rock veteran is doing interviews before jumping on a train to London “to get a couple of head joints fitted to my favourite flute” in preparation for Jethro Tull’s European tour. While the band performed classic early 70s concept albums Aqualung and Thick as a Brick this year, Anderson and Co will dish up more of a greatest hits show on next year’s Australian tour. The visit includes gigs at the Perth Concert Hall and the Byron Bay Bluesfest. Anderson is no fan of festivals, where bands are “wheeled in an hour before you’re due to go on stage” without a sound check. “It’s all about the brief little moment when you’re actually on stage playing,” he says. “The rest of it is, for me, entirely disagreeable. I’m not a festival person. I hate the noise. I can’t abide being backstage with all that din of other rock bands strutting their stuff and road crews and people drinking, shouting and talking — it’s not my atmosphere. “I’m an old fuddy-duddy.” While his band was named after the English agriculturalist who pioneered the horse-drawn seed drill and he enjoys “a nice fountain pen or mechanical wristwatch or a classic weapon, like the Browning P35 — it just sits in your hand like it was made for you”, Anderson is no Luddite. He has embraced digital music technology and his record player has gathered dust in “some far off room in the house that I haven’t visited in 15 years”. While the last Jethro Tull recordings were issued in 2003, Anderson releases music under his own name. The most recent Ian Anderson album is 2014’s Homo Erraticus, a musing on mass migration that references Gerald Bostock, the protagonist of Thick as a Brick and 2012’s sequel. Anderson says Homo Erraticus is not Thick as a Brick 3. However, he is in the process of recording a live album based around the Jethro Tull rock opera, which transports the agricultural inventor to the present day. Given what he did with horse- powered equipment, what might Tull have made of biochemistry, crop science and genetic modification? That may sound like esoteric fodder for rock’n’roll but Anderson is tapping into his anxiety about a planet hurtling towards a population of 12 billion by the end of the century. “At the moment, we can’t feed seven billion people,” he says. “The population of our planet has more than doubled in my lifetime.” Which brings us to the milestones of 2017. Anderson turns 70 in August, while Jethro Tull racks up half a century of flute-driven, bluesy prog-rock. “I’m not an anniversary or birthday kind of guy,” he says. “It’s not that I ignore it but I don’t really feel the need to celebrate it, mainly because other people do. “For me, it’s another day at work. I shall doubtless be playing a concert on my 70th birthday anyway — party pooper that I am.” Jethro Tull by Ian Anderson play Perth Concert Hall on April 11. Tickets from Ticketek.
