My thoughts on Martin's comment was that it was probably made "off the cuff". The part that I found interesting though was that he said "musically it is better than Jethro Tull ever was". I could understand if he feels his new band is a more close, friendly team or that is was more fun to play his new music rather than "Bouree", "Aqualung" or "Locomotive Breath for the umpteen thousandth time.
I think Martin's and his band are producing some really good stuff and I am looking forward to seeing them live in a few months time. I am not a musician so not really fit to make a technical decision on which band produced the best music from a musician perspective. However as a fan that has listened to Tull music for forty something years, I still prefer the sound of the music that Ian Anderson, Martin Barre and many others produced as Jethro Tull. Martin was obviously a key contributor to that sound.

To be honest, I don't think Martin's band could be "musically better than Jethro Tull ever was" but I think you're right that Martin's playing music that is "more fun to play". Martin does say on the 'Living in the past' DVD that some Tull stuff he "never liked playing" so now he's playing the songs he does like playing and that's why he's a happy man. I wonder which were the songs he "never liked"?

I know for a fact he never liked 'Stitch in Time'.......no, really. So crazy - YOU!.......yes, really. Bernie
There's a beast upon my shoulder and a fiend upon my back. Feel his burning breath a heaving, smoke oozing from his stack. And he moves beneath the covers or he lies below the bed. He's the beast upon your shoulder. He's the price upon your head.
He's the lonely fear of dying, and for some, of living too. He's your private nightmare pricking. He'd just love to turn the screw. So stand as one defiant yes, and let your voices swell. Stare that beastie in the face and really give him hell.

www.pressconnects.com/story/entertainment/2017/01/03/readers-share-entertainment-memories/96129588/Readers share entertainment memories from 201611:47 p.m. EST January 3, 2017 Also, an equally impressive show was an encore of last year’s performance by the Martin Barre Band, this time at The Dock in Ithaca. Adding more songs from his latest CD, “Back to Steel” and also putting a twist on a few more Jethro Tull favorites, Martin, at age 70, played masterfully with the enthusiasm of a 20-year-old, with his solid band behind him.
Martin Barre, former guitarist for Jethro Tull, performed at the Dock in Ithaca. (Photo: Photo by Dan Harendza) A highlight was an unexpected, extended cover of Gov’t Mule’s “Thorazine Shuffle.” I’ve heard they will be back here in the Binghamton area again this year — hope that’s true. If so, Tull fans, don’t miss it.
