Martin Barre of Jethro Tull performs at Factory Underground LINK By Kaitlyn Krasselt Updated 2:26 pm, Wednesday, October 19, 2016 NORWALK — Last week Martin Barre slept in his car outside the city of New London. After more than 40 years in the music business, a Grammy award, and what is considered one of the top rock guitar solos of all time, even the former Jethro Tull guitarist couldn’t get a hotel room during peak leaf peeping season. Not that he seemed to mind.
“That’s rock and roll,” Barre laughed. “Life on the road.” Barre was on his way to to play in Old Saybrook with The Martin Barre Band before making two stops in Massachusetts and finally landing in Norwalk Monday night, much to the joy of Jethro Tull fans who turned up for the sold out show at Factory Underground.
It was the band’s first and only — at least for this tour — acoustic show in the U.S., and included a medley of Jethro Tull hits and Martin Barre Band originals. For Barre, paying homage to the band that made him famous and maintaining his own identity outside of the British rock group is a fine line he’s willing to walk.
“I want to be my own thing,” Barre said. “I’ve got the knowledge, and the history that I’ve got musically with Jethro Tull and I’d never turn my back on it, but it’s important that we play a lot off the solo album ... it goes down just as well as the Tull stuff. I don’t want to be a tribute band so it’s a difficult situation because I want to have a parallel career as well.”
Barre was the lead guitarist for Jethro Tull from 1969 to the band’s dissolution in 2014. His signature solo on the 1971 hit “Aqualung” was rated the 25th best solo ever in the U.S. and 20th best solo ever in the U.K., and in 2007 Guitar World magazine rated it one of the 100 Greatest Guitar Solos of all time. He earned a Grammy for his playing on the album “Crest of a Knave” in 1988.
Barre showcased that intricate, melodic guitar playing for which he’s known Monday night, offering up U.S. geography and history questions between songs, and never missing a beat while joking with the dedicated Tull fans, many of whom had seen him play in the 1970s. And, though he’s a veteran musician, Barre said he was nervous to play the intimate acoustic show, a far cry from the electric shows they normally play.
“We’ve done a few in England and they are really good fun because it’s much more chatty, more intimate, we throw in competitions and quizzes ... I really like doing it and it’s a very personal experience,” Barre said. “I think it’s a nice contrast because the electric show is more about dynamics and excitement. The other side of the coin is we can play some very delicate, pretty music and it will sound really good.” In addition to his work with Jethro Tull, Barre has played with many other artists including Paul McCartney, Phil Collins, Gary Moore, Jo Bonamassa and Chris Thompson and shared a stage with legends like Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.
Barre, who turns 70 next month, welcomed the birth his second grandson the same morning he woke up in his car last week. After four decades in music, few would have blamed him for calling it quits when Tull did. Instead, he released a new album — “Back to Steel” — in 2015, and booked dozens of shows around the world. “Toward the end of Tull’s career there was just no passion in the band and that became normal.
When I started my own band I realized all those elements that just haven’t been there,” Barre said. “Jethro Tull finished five years ago and really I just had to start from absolute zero and I was just determined to get the Martin Barre Band established world wide ... I just want some of that back. That feeling is just part of me, my music and my life really, and I wasn’t ready to stop playing.
I’ve got a great band, and musically it’s better than Jethro Tull ever was and the material we’re playing is just great. You just have to start from zero and work hard and I’m motivated to do it.”

I am a big fan of Martin Barre and I think his recent album was excellent. I found this quote in his interview above interesting though and wondered what other Tull fans thought about it
"I’ve got a great band, and musically it’s better than Jethro Tull ever was".

I found this quote in his interview above interesting though and wondered what other Tull fans thought about it "I’ve got a great band, and musically it’s better than Jethro Tull ever was". This doesn't bother me at all. If I spent 43 years in a band that was controlled by someone who wrote 98% of the music and lyrics, I would enjoy the chance to create the music and make decisions based on my own talent. Martin is very talented.
The questions since 2012 have gotten under Martin's skin at times as to why he is no longer in Jethro Tull. Whether Ian should have given Martin more notice as to his new direction is basically irrelevant. I've heard both groups LIVE and feel extremely blessed to have another chance to see Martin in March 2017.
When advertisements say JETHRO TULL performed by Ian Anderson or Martin Barre around the world, GREAT. Martin has confidence in his band and the music they play. If he feels it is better now than before, GREAT !!! It's all TULL to me... Let's ROCK !!!

The treatment they gave to Tull songs were interesting, refreshing, but not captivating. As to his original stuff, OK, but not as demanding as Ian may have pushed him or his band to be. He is coming back here in the spring, and I will pass. Martin wasn't jailed all those years, I think he was lazy and happy to go along for the ride. Ask yourself (or better yet Martin): 1) Why all the times Ian went out on the road did Martin just sit and wait instead of doing his own thing? 2) Why with all the "atrocities" he had to endure, why did he not leave, especially when Pegg did? Martin clearly still hasn't gotten over suffering the same fate as every member of Tull had before him save Ian. It is a small man who denies his past.

Martin clearly still hasn't gotten over suffering the same fate as every member of Tull had before him save Ian. It is a small man who denies his past. I understand that point as well. If Martin had wanted to become a solo artist after others had left why wait? Probably his loyalty became a burden at times, unless he had some health concerns that caused him to be unavailable. Music as a career is the most risky thing once you make it to the level of Super Group or Guitar Legend.
Martin's past solo work in the studio was not what most TULL Fans would pay to see in large venues. Popularity with the name TULL was a necessity and Ian uses it to his advantage every night... After "A", "Broadsword", "Walk Into Light", and "Under Wraps" some felt TULL had gone 'Techno'... We'll never know if "Crest of a Knave" deserved a Grammy without Martin but if you win it, you own it.
The creativity of each member of TULL is always on display. I include all current members as well. The size of the venue or price of a ticket does not make you great. It's the music and energy you project.
I remember someone saying if Glenn Cornick, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond or John Evans had been less entertaining that Ian would have kept them longer. Regardless TULL kept changing and the music got better and better. I just feel so lucky to see either Ian or Martin playing in any size venue. Both are worth it !!!

I would have to disagree with Martin if he was commenting about the times when JT were out and about promoting a new album, especially during the years when the band were at their peak with the general music fan. His comment rather begs the question as to whether he didn't rate some of the later crop of band members. On the other hand his comment may refer to the endless round of greatest hits tours prior to TAAB2. That's a thought I suppose.

Martin Barre at the Music Hall by Lars Fischer The rocky side of Jethro Tull @ Worpswede, Germany LINK The parts he did not like, he simply omitted, explains Martin Barre. As a result, instead of the original length of two LP sides, the next song does not take ten minutes more. It is "Thick as a Brick", an epochal work by the band Jethro Tull, whose guitarist Barre was with 44 years. In 2012 he went out, since then he has been on the road with his own band, to play just what he has fun with. These are mainly the blues and rock-influenced works of his former group as well as new pieces of his solo albums, which point musically in similar directions.
The musician, who will be 70 years old on the coming Thursday, delighted with his first guest performance at the Worpswede Music Hall. He plays with his band over two hours, gives his two chorus singers Alex Hart and Becca Langsford a short performance in front and moderates the long evening "very British". Some songs have their lengths, but especially Barre's interplay with singer and guitarist Dan Crisp, which sometimes reminds you of Wishbone Ash, is a highlight. At some point, there are also a few folk elements, but the centerpiece is wonderfully timeless artrock.

Martin Barre seems to be an extraordinarily nice guy ( too nice?) who played a huge role in the musical uniqueness and overall amazingness of Jethro Tull for about 40 years...enough so that we can give him a pass for saying something as ape$h1t crazy as :' My current band is better than Tull'. There are many ways to judge a band and it is possible that by some narrow and specific criteria, not obvious to me, there is a milligram of accuracy in his statement......or maybe he just wanted to compliment his boys? Well, no matter. But next time he says something that crazy, we send the men in white coats with a butterfly net and the jackets that button in back....deal ?

Don't know Martin other than as a successful, talented guitarist who played with Tull for a very long time. If he meant it in a serious way, then the first thought that occurs is that there's still some level of bitterness about something. Also what period of time in Tull's history is he referring to when he quotes "my band is better than Tull?"
