My take is a mixture of all that's been said especially the point about judging from a crappy youtube video re Martin. Personally though and without hearing Martin's recent concerts in the flesh I had misgivings about the set up. Mind you I'm reminded of a saying from an old timer; "The views that matter the most are from those generous enough to come and see you"
Ryan's stage persona is that of Gerald B and in that he is not seen as "replacing" Ian as such, his time on stage is more theatrical and telling the story.
I wonder how it would look/sound on other songs which don't have that "mask"?
More to the point though is the fact that two veterans of the music world, Ian and Martin, are still making choices, still firing all their own personal cylinders and giving Tull fans something to mull over in the wee small hours.
Ian has an admirable, almost benevolent attitude towards young musicians which I've always admired. They have to be up to the mark though to get the apprenticeship.
The continuing works of Ian, Martin (together as a possible acoustic gig as said earlier) and the rest is something to be grateful for no matter who they've chosen to pair up with at that particular time. I was a drop out way back in the day not over a choice of musician but over the direction one of the albums went ...I was young...I was foolish....and I came back ;D

The "assistant singer" does not work for me. Not a show for me. To each his own. Wanna fight? No. But . . . . the theatrical part of a Tull show has always been in evidence - rabbits, telephone calls, roadies in white coats with cardboard guitars, cod pieces, etc., so Ryan's inclusion is in many ways a continuation of the "Tull theatre".

Hey there buddy, welcome to this side of the fence. I dunno, are you sure you have heard Martin since he started playing with that guy who looks like he is in the Cheiftains playing the wind instruments?. Most impressive. I am always looking forward to what Martin Barre does. The additional guitarist is not needed. The other musicians have their own purpose in this group. I enjoy a variety of style. I live on both sides of an imaginary fence. My one beef with this tour is in the rigid fashion design. Ian and everyone else have the same look each night. I understand the theatrical intent, but hopefully 2013 will bring some new clothes to wear.

FASHION ;D Look out! My one beef with this tour is in the rigid fashion design. Ian and everyone else have the same look each night. I understand the theatrical intent, but hopefully 2013 will bring some new clothes to wear. I was having this thought the other day. Change by a new year is a good idea. A less stale look. I took German in High School but did not speak it very well. All I need is Florian's guitar to translate and it all makes sense.

It would have been great to have seen Florian play at a Greg Lake show. Perhaps Ian and Greg will make some more appearances at each other shows with Florian to play with them. Now all we need is a duel between Florian and Martin to fire up the whole Jethro Tull community until we all tear each other apart. I've always loved 21st Century Schizoid Man, but this live version is incredible!

That sh*t still rocks years later. A duel? Hmmmm? p.s. Welcome to the Tull Forum with lots of fun people to party with. ;D You Rock!

Some of the Ryan singing on the latest clips from Spain are amazing....he was already good...but there are parts of Brick that he now really sings with uncanny Ian-ness. He wasn't effin' around on the break...he was improving.

I found this link with videos from 2007 of Flo's Blues Project and more: www.myvideo.de/watch/2077929/Blues_Project_Florian_OpahleCheck out Florian Opahle's vocals![/quote] Florian is so talented. I just watched a few of these videos. He is so personable and I love that smile. You can just see how much he loves what he is doing. He has and will learn much from Ian and others. I believe there is no stopping him. His journey will continue for many years.

A guitar duel Martin vs Florian would be something great! Maybe one day be possible Forum exclusive from Forum member Oldwebby: Ha! It’s already happened… Well, maybe not a duel, but… I’ve been sorting through my old photos looking for pix for Vol 2 of our A New Day book. I found this low-quality one taken with my pocket camera in Amsterdam in June 2003. The JT boys played a song with support act Masha. Her guitarist was Flo, who presumably had permission to hand his homework in late that week... Post it on the forum if wished. Cheers, Martin

Guitarist under the spell of the legend"This is the experience of a Bavarian on a tour of Jethro Tull" www.tz-online.de/aktuelles/stars/erlebt-bayer-tour-jethro-tull-2905960.html Munich - A young man from Rosenheim is a guitarist with Jethro Tull on Tour: Florian Opahle (30). We spoke with the musician about the generational spiraling meeting.Side by side: Florian Opahle at a gig with Ian Anderson Jethro Tull legend Ian Anderson (65) performing in Circus Krone as a 40-minute classic Thick As A Brick live, it is not his congenial eternity partner Martin Barre (66) on guitar, but a young lad beside him from Rosenheim: Florian Opahle (30). We spoke with the musician about the generational spiraling meetingMr. Opahle, what a feeling it is actually to replace a legend like Martin Barre?Opahle: I did not replace him. I play for years at Ian Anderson's solo projects. The tour is going so well under his name. How exactly do you have to keep in "Thick As A Brick" to Martin Barre's original?Opahle: There are of course many parts that have to sound exactly because they are part of the composition. From the outset, Ian Anderson has given me a lot of freedom. There is absolute freedom especially in the solos. How did you ever come in contact with Ian Anderson?Opahle: I was on tour with the artist Masha, who was booked as support for Jethro Tull. After three weeks on the road I played two songs for Ian Anderson to the question of whether I could make it to me until the next day. These were Eurology and Living In the Past I have rehearsed over night, the next night we played them as a couple in the backstage area. Then he asked me if I wanted to participate in the upcoming tour. I still, frankly, do not even believe it. Then, suddenly, the plane tickets were in the mailbox. So once you get a chance in life. Are you able to play all Jethro Tull pieces yet?Opahle: The back catalog includes 30 albums. That's a lot of material. But the style suits me. There are some very challenging tracks here. Since my classical training has helped. And note should be fixed as a studio musician anyway. As such, you have already worked with many very different artists.Opahle: Yes. Greg Lake was there, Bill Evans, Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues and Al Di Meola. The spectrum ranges from jazz to pop. But my heart beats for rock, especially when progressive rock. Although I also like to cut it out quick, three chords, but prog and fusion are already mine. Interview: Antonio SeidemannIan Anderson's Thick As A Brick concert on 15 May 20 clock in Circus Krone (Marsstraße 43), maps to 50 to 60 euros at the box office.Florian Opahle: His road to the big stageFlorian Opahle was born in '83 in Rosenheim. At five years old, he started to learn classical guitar. He had lessons till he was 20. The guitarist became a respected studio musician, who worked with the likes of Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson and Chris Thompson. After different jobs in Peter Maffays and Leslie Mandokis Red-Rock-Studios, Florian Opahle was on tour with Masha. That is where he met Ian Anderson.
