This chap was performing his hoola hoop skills at the foot of the Abbey steps and I've just noticed the bruises on his thighs. It's more dangerous than it looks.

Sorry guys... but I really never understood this Goth thing... Why this obsession with death? Well, maybe I just don't understand it... (one of my permanent conditions...) It's not that I don't think about the concept of death, but to dress up like this seems to me to be an invitation to negativity... To me it's like surrounding myself with paintings of burning zeppelins, skull ashtrays, or even Jesus Christ hanging on a cross... I simply don't feel comfortable with something like that...

Sorry guys... but I really never understood this Goth thing... Why this obsession with death? It's art. It's also about history, imagination, group occasion and much more that I'm sure John will fill in. We are all interested in 'darkness' I grew up with the Catholic faith thrown at all angles ( the old version - the latin, the dark church etc etc) and now I thank it for my love of candles, imagery, art and a likeness for patchouli ( a bit like incense)...AND Tull.. I might not have 'got' Ian's slant on religion as well if I hadn't been indoctrinated from birth. Incidentally, my mother age 89 still embraces the faith and she has a crucifix above her bed.

It's not an obsession with death as such, more a need to be different than anyone else and to express it in a style no one else can match. The same way as we as JT/IA/MB fans go to concerts wearing t shirts/caps/jackets bearing the group's name. The goth look is not a "fashion" I'd like to dress up in but I'd certainly defend anyone's right to wear it and, after all, it's perfectly harmless and brings a lot of pleasure and happiness to those involved and it's a good day out at the seaside.

This thread always struck me as much more "steampunk" than "goth" honestly. Goth in the USA is more of a dark and morbid kind of style, while steampunk is the anachronistic technology mixed with historical dress and settings. Of course steampunk is an rpg genre as well, so (as always) my views can be shaped by Dungeons & Dragons on this. --Ron--

In recent years, the weekend has attracted other alternative subcultures, including Victorian vampires, rockers, punks and members of the steampunk subgenre. Some regulars consider it is no longer a purely "Goth" weekend. But who's complaining? Not me

So it's a little like Halloween, maybe... Come to think of it... I personally like Halloween... of course it's not Halloween... I'm really not critical about this Goth thing... and now I understand that it not Goth? (...by the way... how can anybody claim to understand something when they place a question mark behind the sentence that claims to understand it? ) So it's Steempunk then? Somebody once said that when it comes to Halloween, you don't have to believe in Halloween in order to have fun with it... The same goes for Christmas... I guess I was just a little curious... Interesting though...

The goth look is not a "fashion" I'd like to dress up in but I'd certainly defend anyone's right to wear it and, after all, it's perfectly harmless and brings a lot of pleasure and happiness to those involved and it's a good day out at the seaside. David Bowie once said that he really liked what he referred to as: "The other people." People who were not like him... The freedom to be who you want to be, or the one you believe to be, preferably the one you really are... (If something like that really exist...) accompanied by the freedom to speak your mind, I find to be very important... but if some of these people want to be different, why do they join a group of people that basically look alike? I'm not saying that it's not okay to have fun with these things, but I remember that Gary Zukav, the author of The seat of the soul, once said that he spend a lot of time trying to be like The Marlboro man, if you remember the commercial... The problem with that was that he just wasn't like that... and according to him it took him a lot of time to break free of this imagined understanding of who he was, and a long, long, time to find out who he really was... So under the surface of having fun with the concept of Goth, punk, steam punk, or in Gary Zukav's case, the macho image of The Marlboro man, there may actually be someone in real and sometimes even dangerous trouble... Another thing is that I really never understood why anyone wants to be different from anybody else... I personally don't want to be different, but I do want to be the best that I can be... If this eventually leads me in a position where I find myself to be different, well, that something else, and I think that, that's okay... but to try to be different for the sake of being different, seems to be quite meaningless to me... I want to hang a picture on the wall because I like that particular picture... not because I want to distance myself from anybody else... This has nothing to do with anybody else... If all of humanity had the same pictures on the wall as I do, I would still have the same pictures hanging on the wall... not because they also have it hanging the wall, but because I personally like it, and because I personally want it to be hanging on the wall... I also believe that it can be a diversion from who you really are... It's so easy to put on a uniform that were created by someone else, and lose sight of the one you really are... and in some cases it can actually kill you... If you put on the uniform of The Marlboro man, you may find yourself in very dangerous situations... Climbing mountains, or driving fast and furiously on the roads of the world, endangering innocent children sitting on the backseats of family cars... It can also seriously limit ones options... If I wanted to be different for the sake of being different, it's getting very hard to chose a direction that a majority of people also like... I am now limited to doing things that are different from them, even if I really like what they do... suddenly I can't listen to The Bee Gees, because Saturday Night Fever has just been released in the cinemas of the world, and too many people are going absolutely crazy, simply because they like it so much... To be frank... I could live with that, but what if 70 % of the world's population were going crazy for the music of Jethro Tull? For the sake of being different, I would have to burn my records, and distance myself from what I deep down really love...

Sounds like child abuse to me... but I think you're right... Good things can spring from something like that... Still scaring children with the eternal fires of hell, should be outlawed, and treated as a crime... Too many children are suffering because of the dark religions of the world... Do you thing that it has effected you permanently in a negative way? I presume that this has poisoned most of your childhood... Is that taking it a bit too far?

Not something I would hang on my wall, but that's just me and my affection for Feng Shui... By the way... I don't think that people are wrong in any way if they hang something like this on their wall, or if they have skull ashtrays... It's just that I personally wouldn't have it in my home... but I think it's sad to hear that children are treated badly, even if they are treated badly by someone who probably did it with the best of intensions... Children can't protect themselves from something like that... I have taken care of so many children, and I am a fearless "crusader" when it comes to protecting them...

No. Most kids were brought up in a strict religious home and school in the 50's and 60's. No, but I've got a touch of eczema at the moment but I'll probably pour some almond oil on it instead of holy water (that doesn't work)

I applaud anyone who protects children from abuse. This GOTH thing is a cultural phenomena. Many places use historic occasions to create tourism and entertainment. Sometimes it's very over the top!
With Halloween (TULL-o-ween) becoming more popular over the years, some places go all out in the Fall. This type of masquerade adds much to the thrill of being young and excitement just like Christmas. There are some very conservative people who feel Santa Claus is an evil distraction to their celebration. No matter to me because I celebrate for fun and family which includes many traditions.
With Whitby Goth Weekend being a bi-annual event, I see so much joy and amazement on everyone's face. Part is the music which can be even more of what makes this so cool...
