From bookdrum.com - link"Arch-Druid in his full Judicial Costume" etching from Charles Knight, Old England: A Pictorial Museum (1845) Thanks for sharing, culture is knowledge. Celtic Christmas OriginsSearch for the roots of today's Christmas traditions and you will find your way back to the ancient Celtic festival of Alban Arthuan, held during the Winter Solstice on December 21. One of the principle reasons for the rapid propagation of Christianity throughout Europe during the first millennium was the willingness of Christian leaders to incorporate the rituals, beliefs and customs of other religions. Few of the ancient displaced religions were more assimilated than the Druids, Wiccans and Pagans. www.blackhillscelticevents.org/Events/CelticXmas.htm"Convey culture to everyone, regardless of his race, religion or categories." Very true Remy and also a nod to the Nordic influence too. Nordic influences on the festive seasonwww.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-30411490"They would prepare food, brew alcohol and visit friends and relatives in the festival known as Yule, a term possibly derived from the Old Norse word "jól". Winter starts tomorrow, Monday 22 December at 00h 3m, peninsular official time (Spain...), as calculated by the National Astronomical Observatory. This station will last 88 days and 23 hours and end on March 20, 2015 with the beginning of spring... In classical antiquity, the temples were arranged with the gateway to the East, so that, with the sunrise, the light rays illuminate the statue of the god guarded the back of the sanctuary. With the advent of Christianity, the early church continued this tradition, even after the Council of Nicaea established that the head was which should aim at sunrise; thus, when beginning its ascent, sunlight entering through illuminating the altar apse, a picture of the Messiah, light source announcing the new day; why the East has been considered since ancient image of Christ, "the true light that enlightens every man that cometh into the world." However, in many churches and medieval cathedrals is not exactly true, and the head is displaced a few degrees to the east, as with Mallora Cathedral, whose head inexplicably pointing to the southeast. interesting information on this link: www.signoslapidarios.org/inicio/localizacion-castilla-y-leon/163-soria/ucero/san-bartolome-de-ucero/240-la-alineacion-del-solsticio-de-invierno(Google translator works well with this page) Light show in La Seu Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca. Solstice Bells was played on radio 2 this morning on the 'Good Morning Sunday' programme. A great way to start the day! It's been played on Planet Rock and BBC 6 Music as well It seems to have been featured more this year than previous years - maybe it should have been re-issued as a Christmas single perhaps ?
