teamrock.com/review/2013-11-27/wild-turkey-battle-hymn-turkeyWild Turkey: Battle Hymn/TurkeyALBUM REVIEW Reviews / 27 Nov 2013 / by PH Two shots from Glenn Cornick’s post-Tull band.Maybe, in hindsight, it wasn’t the best career move, quitting Jethro Tull after playing bass on their first three hit albums. But Glenn Cornick admits he was “thrown out”, so had little choice but to lick his wounds and persevere with a new band. Listening to these two albums from the early 1970s, now officially available on CD for the first time in 15 years, it’s doubtful they gave Ian Anderson any sleepless nights. Battle Hymn is the more accessible of the pair, but if Cornick had a musical vision for the band, it has been lost over the years. At odds with rhythm guitarist Jon Blackmore’s folk roots, any power Wild Turkey might have unleashed is undermined by the weak vocals of Gary Pickford-Hughes. And those lyrics... ‘Yesterday’s tomorrow is tomorrow’s yesterday!’ There is none of Tull’s freewheeling diversity; an Allman Brothers element surfaces on the unfortunately-named second album Turkey. There are some amiable detours (the melodic Tomorrow’s Friend) but not enough to elevate Wild Turkey from the plethora of prog bands exploding all over the UK music scene at the time. When it comes to albums by ex-Jethro Tull members, my advice: stick to Blodwyn Pig.

if i had to choose between Blodwyn Pig & Wild Turkey i agree the pig wins over the turkey ! - however, turkey were ok, very much of their time (e.g. the lyrics, as noted already) - GP-H as singer worked with Rick Wakemen on King Arthur & Journey - am sure i read an interview years ago with Jon Lord from d purple that gph was considered as a replacement for ian gillan back in the 70's which would have been a good fit, so I don't know that i would say his voice was weak, but it's all personal opinion ! - apart from the 2 70's albums (battle hymn & turkey - plus a 7" single), they reformed mid 90's & then approx 10 years after that, both times releasing an album & doing a few dates with ghp & glenn in both bands (final time with mr bunker drumming) - there were some archive live releases (marquee & final gig which had bernie marsden on guitar)plus an album with out-takes for a 3rd 70's album & gph issued a solo album around the time of the final turkey album - anyone that met glenn will have great memories - he said what was on his mind & didn't hold back ! - some of the emails i received had me laughing so much, he is a BIG miss in so many ways

But then if they'd made one further album it could have turned out to be a massive best seller and elevated them to super stadium performers which I would think was their ambition. As for Glenn's emails to me - an experience. I must find them and re-read them again

knowyourbassplayer.com/2020/08/20/glenn-cornick-jethro-tull/Glenn Cornick (Jethro Tull, Wild Turkey, Paris) He forged an indelible identity on one of the most innovative and influential rock ensembles of any generation: Jethro Tull. The first in a long line of bassists who worked under the auspices of Ian Anderson; Glenn Douglas Bernard Cornick anchored Tull’s most enduring early collections: This Was (1968), Stand Up (1969), and Benefit (1970). Judging from the photographs that have been published over the years, Glenn utilized a wide array of basses, ranging from a battered graffiti laden reverse neck ’62 Fender Jazz to various Gibson instruments (Thunderbird, EB-3), to cite a few. Regardless of his tools, Glenn’s phrasing, tone, and approach afforded him instant recognition as his lines were simultaneously supportive and melodic. The rhythm section of Glenn and drummer Clive Bunker were the driving force beneath Tull’s signature meld of blues, jazz and progressive –hese cats could swing and rock at the same time. Once again, despite critical acclaim and extensive touring, Cornick’s ensembled folded after two releases. What a great track and it makes me even more sad that I didn't get to see Wild Turkey. The nearest I did get was in 1973 when I waited for ages outside the Sands Centre in Carlisle shown below only for the doors to stay shut because, unknown to me was that the concert had been cancelled due to poor ticket sales
