Well off the normal tourist paths, in the under-rated city of Hamburg, there is a very cool neighborhood called: Karolinen-viertel....Good bars, good Turkish food, good people and a real working-class, no bull$h1t mix: gastarbeiters, holdout punks and hippies, german bohemians and even a smattering of old Brits from places like Wolverhampton who swear george harrison died owing them 5 quid from 1962. Other than the hellish weather, it would be a great place to live when the USA becomes fully unbearable.

"There's magic afoot in Cornwall, as those who have been there know, she'll hold your heart in her fingers and never let you go"...BBC 4 had an interesting documentary on last night called Art in Cornwall and it featured the artists of St Ives - it also had the best filming of St Ives I've ever seen - worth catching www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00wbn80/The_Art_of_Cornwall/

Beanos in Croydon. One of the best collector's record shops I've ever known. It's sadly closed down now but had an atmosphere all of its own - probably the smell of vinyl and dusty cardboard from the recoed sleeves. The shop had a collection of very knowledgable and friendly staff who were always willing to help and advise, whether buying or selling. David Lashmar was the owner who I got to know as he was a guest on a radio programme I hosted back in 2000. He knew we were after a recording by a female singer from the late 50s by the name of Yana to play for a listener. Not only did he lend us a copy of her record, but didn't charge us a penny as he knew we were a charity. Image form yanaguard.webs.com

Why oh why do theses places close down - I know why but still you would think that some imaginative and forward thinking local councils would give them some sort of tourist /curiousity status and give them a healthy rates reduction. People are fed up seeing the same type of shops on the High Street and whether your interested in art/books or music or just visiting some town for the day does it not make sense to have an interesting shop on the High Street as well as the run of the mill chains - rant over Here's another one still surviving and worth a visit - but what a visit

One of my favourite things in the brilliant book included in HE is the beautiful picture of the Sanatorium Oberwaid where Ernest T Paritt died. I lived for a time in the Bodensee in the 60's with a family who were stationed there in the charmingly named Alpenblick Strasse in the town of Kressbronn. The names on the map bring back lovely memories - Konstanz, Friedrichshafen and Lindau - where I went to school. We travelled about and went across to Switzerland. It is a stunning part of Europe Unfortunately the little yellow google man on google maps isn't allowed to "land" on the area however here are some pics and a poster of the actual sanatorium and an up- to- date picture which would have given Mr Paritt the heebie geebies if he saw it now with it's futuristic design. not only in the present but almost the same view as the one in the booklet. link if anyone fancies a sabbatical ( it's called a Medical Centre and Spa now) www.oberwaid.ch/home.html

Bodensee is one of those places that impresses Americans no end...you can have breakfast in Germany, lunch in Switzerland and nightcap in Austria with minimal effort, right ? Tried to see Tull there in between some other German dates and Zurich ( dressing room tape night) and Milan...or was it Milan thenjh Zurich? But somehow got stuck in Paris ( I know, worse fates). While my (then) (long suffering)wife and I were hitchiking around the continent with concerts sprinkled in, my wealthier friend shared a train with all the Tullies somewhere in southern germany and reported that Ian refused help toting his luggage. That trip included a huge earthquake in SF while we were gone and the wall-a-tumbling down in germany and throughout the almost instantly 'former' east Bloc.

I was too young to see concerts but I remember sleeping under a huge duvet in an Austrian Inn(we still had layers of flannelette sheets and blankets in the yookay then )one night and then sipping a coke cola served by a waiter in a swanky hotel in Zurich the next day. We tootled along the roads - over the Alps and down to one of the Italian lakes. Must do it again some day.

Old tin mine,Kernow (Cornwall for the non Cornish speakers) i57.images obliterated by tinypic/293c6q0.jpg[/IMG] The Song of the Western Men"A good sword and a trusty hand! A merry heart and true! King James's men shall understand What Cornish lads can do! And have they fixed the where and when? And shall Trelawny die? Here's twenty thousand Cornish men Will know the reason why! And shall Trelawny live? And shall Trelawny die? Here's twenty thousand Cornish men Will know the reason why! Out spake their Captain brave and bold: A merry wight was he: Though London Tower were Michael's hold, We'll set Trelawny free! 'We'll cross the Tamar, land to land: The Severn is no stay: With "one and all," and hand in hand; And who shall bid us nay? And shall Trelawny live? And shall Trelawny die? Here's twenty thousand Cornish men Will know the reason why! And when we come to London Wall, A pleasant sight to view, Come forth! come forth! ye cowards all: Here's men as good as you. 'Trelawny he's in keep and hold; Trelawny he may die: Here's twenty thousand Cornish bold Will know the reason why
