I found this photo on ebay the other day and thought it was worthy of posting here. It certainly made me think that (a) there aren't that many photos of "Beastie" and (b) I wonder where it is now or even if it still exists. I contacted 10cars, who provided many photographs to the German language book "Jethro Tull Over Germany" ( jethrotull.proboards.com/thread/262/books-magazines-tull?page=2 ) and he has OK'd it for me to re-post the photo below from the book. © Carsten Bergmann The question now is are there any more photos of "Beastie" still in existance ? 10cars is going to have a look to see if he has any more in his collection. Member's contributions and ideas of its whereabouts will be gratefully received.

How any Beasties were there? That second one looks a bit Darth Vaderish.

I have a black and white photograph of Ian with the Beastie on his shoulder that I took at Nostel Priory, trouble is, I haven't a clue where I've put it, I'm thinking it might be in a box under another box in my loft. Why do we put stuff in the loft

Wonderful--one of my favorite albums and tours.
I wonder where that thing must be now?

Wonderful--one of my favorite albums and tours. I wonder where that thing must be now? Sad new for all "beastie" fans. I received an email from James A. today on the subject. Hi Graham,
Sadly, this will be long gone! There was only a few items stored at a warehouse in the 1990's and when that all moved, most of that went on a big bonfire. Even if Beastie was amongst that lot (which I doubt), it is no more.
Chances are, it ended the last show with a trucking or staging company.
JamesSo in the light of the above news, any more images of "beastie" that members can locate, either in personal collections or from hours spent pouring over the back pages and dusty corners of the internet will be much appreciated.

I don't think I can blame Ian for burning the Beastie doll in a bon fire--if that is in fact what happened. After all, it was a fiend upon his back. I myself would hang it on my wall and occasionally on my shoulders to the utter dismay of my girlfriend.. Great delivery as always, Remy! The 1982 tour is by far one of my favorites! Any and all footage is welcome on my computer.

Any and all footage is welcome on my computer. I've never been able to find out the inspiration behind the design of the doll. Whether it was based on a pre-existing idea (Celtic, Nordic, eastern European etc) or if it was the feverish imagination of one IA is open to question. Myself I favour the latter

Sorry to be a killjoy and I also admit I didn't see the shows but it's hardly a great special effect is it? It looks like something the kids made up with paper mache one boring, dreich afternoon in Skye. Gael "What'll we use for hair?" James "Stick a couple of twigs on it and make sure you get the fiver off the old man"

James "Stick a couple of twigs on it and make sure you get the fiver off the old man" Love it. Yes it's not what you might call a work of art but then it was only used for a brief time during the song. There were apparently two made, probably the one that had the eyes that lit up was for the evening concerts and one for the festivals when they played during the day. I wonder how heavy it was - it is of course a lovely piece of Spinal Tap 'ism.

I think the redeemable stage prop from that tour was the cyclops kitty set on Vittesse's keyboard. Shortly before showtime it was ignited with its one cyclops eye emitting a laser light. Also what ever that thing was Pegg was wearing on his head at one of the 2 shows I saw, the one at Nostell Priory in the UK. Have seen a pic of it a time or two, the sort of thing a lady would wear to a ball in about 1570. Pretty sure, unlike Martin's monocle, that Ian Anderson did not even have to talk Pegg into it, he either did it willingly or it was his idea to begin with.

Ray, CK just for you jethrotull.proboards.com/thread/1344?page=1Love our Graham. I have a generally excellent memory for unimportant minutae and I would nearly bet, though that thing appears to have 2 eyes, that it was a singular green laser light coming from kitty. The band members probably remember because it meant showtime though they probably had some other alarm. It was very definitely a Tull prop.

James "Stick a couple of twigs on it and make sure you get the fiver off the old man" It may be hardly a special effect, but your story has made it even much more special The whole idea of running around stage with a huge handmade doll (with your fairy tale likeness) that has it's legs wrapped around your neck is just too crazy. Of all the extravagances of rock acts throughout the year, I think that at least this one deserves an honorable mention every once in a while.

That's a bit wierd and wacky. The first time I heard I/A use the word 'Beastie' was to a school friend of mine who was a little rotund. That must be nearly fifty years ago now. She never forgot or forgave him.

She never forgot or forgave him. I'm not surprised. Oh the politically incorrect 1960's and 70's! When I moved down to London from Glasgow I was called all sorts of names by fellow work colleagues and Jock was the very least of them. Most of the time I laughed politely ( more fool me) but at times it did wear thin.

Was the term "Beastie" used in England and elsewhere? I know in Scotland it was used to describe any insects or rodents.
"Oh look there's a wee beastie on the floor!"
or
" Ach Ian - there's a right big beastie on yer shooder"
"Wee sleekit timerin beastie.... Rabbie Burns
This is my 9999 post D'ye see that duck? ....Duck!!
