Stories surface about Ian and the rest turning up at various places either performing or opening supermarkets (?) not sure the validity of these, maybe imagined or true. Stick any here that you've heard. A comment made on the interview that Redmond posted recently states that the band turned up unexpected at a school in El Paso in 1972 to perform as the drummers child went there? Not sure the name of the school but it blew them away! Ian did attend a school - Thomas Jefferson High,in 2005, Washington. "..Last year, as a junior at the brain factory that is Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, Zeke and his friend Bryce Basques formalized their shared love of "Comfortably Numb" and "Whole Lotta Love" and "25 or 6 to 4" by starting the Classic Rock Appreciation Society. The group meets every Friday, except during those weeks when paunchy, balding rock stars spring to life from the pages of the liner notes and stop by for visits: Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, in the area last month for a gig, came to the campus for a midweek chat about "one of the most awesomest bands of all time" (per Basques) and the meaning of "Aqualung." www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/13/AR2005111301291_2.html

Wow, interesting. I have heard the Stones have done plenty of impromptu performances throughout the years, but nothing as radical as showing up to a high school classic rock appreciation society.
I'd be that kid who pissed his pants when Ian surprised the class and ends up missing the whole thing dabbing a wet towel on my drawers.

Love your "flutelong" Subway picture !

sun streaking cold - Iceland sun streaking warm - Sorrento Italy from the official page; "Unnur Birna is a Reykjavik-based violinist and singer. She has performed as a session musician with countless Icelandic and international artists while recording and appearing as a solo artist as well. Unnur has joined me as an unpaid guest on a few Icelandic shows in recent years, so it is a great pleasure to return the favour and appear on one of her songs at last. This new track, Sunshine, came about in Italy, written as an ode to sunlight and happiness after fleeing the dark winter in Iceland" - Ian Anderson Sunshine (snippet) soundcloud.com/unnur-birna-bassad-ttir/sunshine

www.facebook.com/SoundStudiesProjectsA creative platform for the future of Afghan musicians and artists with respect to expressing identity, celebrating diversity and encouraging unity. www.soundstudiesprojects.comIA donated some recording equipment to this project back in January 2013 Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull gives Flutes, Tascam Recorder, Mics and More to Sound Studies Projects !!
A lovely Gift to the Students of the Rock Center and Studio, Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull has donated many magnificent items to us!
I will list them all individually and tell you why each one is so important to us:
Three (3) Beautiful Flutes and Lesson Book by Trevor Wye: We can't WAIT to begin teachng this instrument at the Center! In Afghanistan, there are already a few flautists and others who play the tula (a traditional flute). We are ready and excited to introduce everything from Classical Studies by Bach to tounge-twisting, beat-boxing riffs that musicians have developed on this instrument over the years - and leading the way was Mr. Anderson himself! With a little more internal research at the library of Sound Studies Projects, we are working to map together what is the family tree of Flute, Ney, Bansuri, Tula, and other relatives for our students to explore !!!
TASCAM DP-02 Digital Audio Recorder: HOW DID IAN KNOW ?! This is the PERFECT thing for us to go out and record everything in our path - especially as The Studio is just about up and running ! Look out everyone, a new wave of music is about to cross your paths ! And now WE can come to YOU !
Two (2) SHURE SM57 Mics and One (1) SHURE SM58 Mic: Complete with yellow tape that says "TULL" and purple tape that identifies placement, Ian told me that these mics were used during their tours in the 70s. Workng like new, a testiment to the quality of the product, they are now on their way to Kabul to be used in our Recording Studio, for our live Concert Tours throughout the region, and for the training of young sound engineers throughout Afghanistan.
And last but not least, Two Mic Clips and an XLR Mic Cable: Let these items not be overshadowed by the others... these are just a few of the very important things that mean a lot to us. In Kabul, it is very difficult to find even the simplest (not to mention good quality) of items - cables, strings, picks, mic clips - and without these we would be using Duct Tape to keep it all together. (And nobody likes sticky fingers when they're about to rip a solo).
So THANK YOU IAN, for everything, even the small things, that make our lives that much easier and fun. Your generosity will encourage our community to be more creative in our spare time, allow us to explore new sounds and cultures, and inspire us through the spirit of learning, collaboration, giving, and building towards a better overall life for ourselves and those in Kabul !

Rock legend helps to reach cash target to save woodsThis one's a couple of years old but certainly still worth a mention. " ROCK’n’roll flautist Ian Anderson’s gig on Saturday helped Wroughton reach their £30,000 target for the Kings Farm Wood Appeal. The lead singer of the British band graced the stage of the Wroughton Club in the village’s final push to save the woodland from development in a sell-out performance." www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/11083070.display/

Tull order for auction night to aid animal charityfrom The Swindon Advertiseri63.images obliterated by tinypic/2isw0zt.jpg[/IMG] ...ROCK star Ian Anderson, leader of the world renowned rock band Jethro Tull, has donated a special, signed guitar believed to be worth more than £4,000 for an auction being staged at an Oak and Furrows fundraising dinner. The guitar, an electro-acoustic Raven 1 custom made by Devon luthier Andrew Manson in 1994 will have a £3,000 reserve price on the night and will be auctioned by Philip Allwood of Moore, Allen and Innocent and BBC's Bargain Hunt programme. It was used on the writing and recording of Roots To Branches (released 1996) and on tour in the USA and Europe in 1995 and is fitted with a Fishman under-saddle transducer and pre-amp. Jethro Tull, known for hits Living in the Past, The Witch’s Promise and Sweet Dream, enjoyed huge success in the late 1960s and 1970s. The event which will be held on March 4 at the former Four Pillars Hotel at the Cotswold Water Park will include dinner, the auction, a poetry reading by Pam Ayres, poet and entertainer, and music by the Sapphires quartet and singer/songwriter Leon Day. Proceeds from the auction will go towards urgently needed funds for the wildlife rescue centre, near Cricklade, which has helped more than 4,000 animals and birds in the past year. Ian will personally sign the label on the guitar inside the instrument.... Robin Thompson, Oak and Furrows chairman of trustees, said: “We have also been promised more along with raffle prizes. "The event is expected to be the first of several over the next year or so, to boost funds which are now under great pressure.” Oak and Furrows provide care for around 60 animal patients at any one time. From fallen fledgling birds to hibernating hedgehogs and deer the charity has been a lifeline for sick and injured wild animals since 1996. To cope with their increasing demand the charity moved from their Somerford Keys base to the Blakehill Farm nature reserve in Wiltshire. The charity are always looking for donations of cat and dog food to feed an ever growing number of hedgehogs over the winter period along with newspapers to line the animals' cages. Tickets at £30 can be ordered by calling the head of fund raising for Oak and Furrows Wildlife Rescue Centre on 01793 751412. To donate to the charity visit www.justgiving.com/oakandfurrows

Thanks Patti (Non-rabbit) This looks like a great charity event indeed! My son still rescues wild eagles, hawks and owls for several organizations in Western North Carolina.
