www.forres-gazette.co.uk/Prog rock god's return - one of 2014's must-sees!
Looking forward to some of the best shows already announced for 2014, any rock fan would put Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson's Aberdeen and Inverness gigs on their list. Here Ian - voted prog rock god last year - talks about the new album that will feature on the tour alongside some Tull hits. And below, we pick out 10 more must-see nights across the area.THERE was never a chance veteran rock icon Ian Anderson – Jethro Tull’s singer, flautist and driving force – wouldn’t have picked up his recent prog rock god award. A couple of months from a long solo tour – taking in Aberdeen's Music Hall on May 20 and Eden Court, Inverness, on May 21 – Ian Anderson explained why you couldn’t have kept him away from Prog magazine’s awards’ ceremony. “It was a very important and very heartfelt occasion for me,” he said. “While I don’t give a toss about me being a rock god, I do about supporting the dying embers of the print media. “I wouldn’t be doing the job I am without the help of people in the media. They weren’t always kind to you – but if you’re a singer in a rock band or a politician you accept the rough comes with the smooth. “But these days many of us feel that we owe something to media – we have to pay our dues sometimes. “So when you have a glossy magazine fighting for survival, to stay on the newsagents shelves in the UK, they have something of a minority appeal – and it’s important that people like me go along to the awards ceremony – though with our tongues in in our cheeks.” Maybe a lot of people who have followed Ian’s progress over 45 years – including selling over 60 million albums with Jethro Tull so far to many solo projects – won’t know the music press inspired his music career in an early job on a newsagents’ stand. But while many musicians would be happy to settle for a slowing career with a big-name band like Tull, Ian’s energy means he likes to push his music forward. Last year the band produced a collector’s edition of the 1970 album Benefit, following on from the 40th anniversary edition of Thick As A Brick in 2012. So much for the past. But Ian’s now working on a solo album – and it’s a change of musical direction, a concept album promised for release by Easter. “It goes back to 9am on January 1, 2012 when I decided to do it after a week off for Christmas. You go in at the appointed hour with your flute, laptop, guitar, empty head and file – and start to work. “It’s amazing how once you get the first little glimmer of an idea it does come thick and fast. After three weeks I had it pretty much mapped out. “I’ve still got a few weeks to make any changes before we start rehearsals. “Recording was scheduled to go before and after Christmas, but when everyone else got 10 or so days off, I had to work on the flute and vocal bits and bobs. “A lot of research goes into a conceptual album and you have a lot of loose ends to keep tying together.” Ian defines the sound as “folk-prog-metal” and as well as those songs on the tour, there will also be a selection of Jethro Tull highlights. “I’m like a supermarket shelf, I’m forced to think of different brand names. After all these years, the Jethro Tull brand does suggest a can of Heinz beans – it’s something people rely on and know what they are going to get when they open the packet. You can’t sneak in a bit of curry powder without putting folks out. “But over the last 15 years, I’ve increasingly done more project-related work, maybe with string quartets or acoustic shows or the cathedral shows I do at Christmas. “You really have to let people understand that this is going to be a bit different. “So I use my own name for the project-related things. “And if you’re lucky enough – and I suppose brave enough – to go and confront people with a whole bunch of stuff that that they can’t possibly know, then you’ve got to make it entertaining. “It’s got to work on first inspection!” Hinting at what to expect, Ian said: “It’s not an end to the acoustic and gentler moments, but more of an emphasis on the louder aggressive flute style which marked me out from the earliest days of Jethro Tull.” Ian Anderson’s tour comes to Aberdeen Music Hall on May 20 and Eden Court, Inverness, on May 21. www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson brings his Homo Erraticus tour to Derby's Assembly RoomsLynne Brighouse talks to Ian Anderson about what inspired his latest album and forthcoming tour. IAN Anderson will be back on the road again this year, visiting Derby in May with other former members of Jethro Tull. And, like many other successful performers, he has no intentions of retiring just yet. "Why would you even consider it when you can still be out there doing what you love, testing and challenging yourself?" says the talented musician who became well known in the 1960s and 1970s for his one-legged flute playing. In recent months, Ian has been busy developing and recording his new album, which he will tour from spring onwards. It is called Homo Erraticus – Latin for the wandering man. He says: "The theme I was interested in exploring is our species' tendency to constantly globally migrate. "The movement of people around the world is a controversial topic at the moment but it can often be discussed in very inward- looking terms. "It is easily forgotten that all humankind came from the same place originally – Mesopotamia – and that meaningful migration has always taken place. We are an opportunistic species – the grass is always greener, so we go where we imagine there are better prospects. "Humans have never had a permanent homeland we have always explored. The sense of migration is always there." Ian is very proud of the heritage of the UK and, although he realises there are real issues to be addressed in terms of how many people Britain can sustain, he would like debates around population movement to be more outward-looking and less inflammatory. "I'm not a politician; I'm an artist and an entertainer, it is also my job to make people laugh and but also maybe to get angry about things at times, too," he says. Ian says the style of his new album is very close to his musical origins. He says: "I have been influenced by many genres over the years. Initially by blues and jazz – then folk music in the early part of my career. Actually church music is there somewhere too, that's what I grew up with. There is evidence of it in many of my songs and that influence is still there. "Even Indian music has had an impact. It is part of my heritage too from spending many hours eating in Indian restaurants. "As artists, we soak in all the influences we come across and Britain is a very multi-cultural place these days. I wanted the album to speak about our heritage and culture here but also embrace world music. It doesn't feel so foreign any more and we have integrated and absorbed these influences without even being aware of it at times." The 66-year-old plans to perform songs from Homo Erraticus in Derby and says there is no substitute for playing live. "You test your musical skills in a recording studio but it is incomparable with the instant feedback and emotional response of a live audience," he says. "That shared experience is thrilling. Why would I want to give that up?" WHAT: Ian Anderson WHERE: Derby Assembly Rooms WHEN: May 13 ADMISSIONS: £26 and £30. TICKETS: Call 01332 255800 or visit www.derbylive .co.uk

www.stereoboard.com/Ian Anderson Releases New Record 'Homo Erraticus' To Coincide With Tour Friday, 31 January 2014, written by Jon SticklerLegendary prog pioneer Ian Anderson has announced the release of his new studio album 'Homo Erraticus'.
The record will be out on April 14, coinciding with Ian's 2014 tour, via his own label imprint Calliandra Records in conjunction with Kscope.
In 1972 Jethro Tull released iconic concept album 'Thick As A Brick', based on a poem by child prodigy Gerald Bostock; in 2012, as fans wondered what happened to Bostock, Ian Anderson explored the different paths his life might have taken in 'Thick As A Brick 2'. With 'Homo Erraticus' enfant prodigy Gerald is back for real.
Following a 40 years’ political career, Bostock reunited with Anderson taking the role of tour manager on a string of shows. ‘Homo Erraticus’ marks his return to songwriting, and it’s based on an unpublished manuscript by amateur historian Ernest T. Parritt (1865-1928).
The album release will be followed by an extensive UK tour, where 'Homo Erraticus' will be performed in its entirety followed by a selection of Tull classics updated with video and theatrics.

I have found the downside to Scott Hammond's game. He is a bit too pleasant of aspect for Tull photo's. This was a difficult skill to master for Clive Bunker and Martin Barre, being convivial type dudes by nature, Martin ended up getting it all the way down though, just about to a science. With everything else under the sun being re released and re mastered I would love to just getting a dvd of both Ian arranging the various group photos down the years, (I know the first of those released that is an official representation that is off the cuff, will be just that, the first time it has happened.) I long suspected it and became certain of it when, I think it was Barrie, who mentioned that boxes would arrive at the houses prior to tour of Ian's intended appearance for each guy. Here's your's Martin. LOL! Try this monocle. Also I would love a DVD of them, or Ian, getting the laughter together on both WYTTHM and Up To Me.Closeups, nosehairs, the whole shot.

I reckon Scott needs a stretch at Tull Towers where he can do an extensive course in " The Stern Glance of a Showman" for promos and stage presence. Wouldn't it be great if there existed such a thing as pics of Martin's face when handed the gentleman's smoking jacket, the trousers made of granny's left over curtains and yet another monocle.

I've just been checking on The Sage Gateshead to see how the ticket sales are going for Ian's concert on May 16th and there's only 65 seats left so I'm hoping for a sell-out on the night. I was a bit surprised by the promo photograph used to advertise the concert, it certainly doesn't look like a guy who leaps about the stage playing the flute, it looks more like he's going to give a talk on poetry.

I think he's setting the mood. It's going to be a dark album. We'd better not joke about it anymore.
I think Ernest T Parritt was a bit of shady character - Nostradamus meets Fat Tony.

This is what I feared, that eventually we'd see indicators that there's not much kazoo. In that case, I'll cross my fingers in hope of reverb on the bass tom.
