Hello fellow Tullfans, I want to tell of my encounter with this amazing piece of music.
I was still at school when Living in the Past came out. I loved that from the first time I heard it. I remember we sometimes went to a cafe at lunchtime from school and it was on the jukebox.....awesome......I loved the b-side Driving Song too!!
I know now that already there were 3 brilliant Tull albums out there, but I didn't know then, remember I was still only 14 or about that.
Move forward a couple of years to 1971 and I'm not sure what made me realise that a new Jethro Tull album was about to be released, but I remember buying it and putting it on my parent's radio-gram......a mono record player which had a nice sound, but mono.......which meant the needle only picked up one channel.....
It still sounded amazing! I remember sitting there spellbound. I had never heard anything like this ever before! It was nothing like the track I had bought it for - Living in the Past.....but that didn't matter, it was different, and it was awesome.
So.....I put this new vinyl album on my dad's record player....
Aqualung.....wow!!!!! what was this?? so unusual, but it made me want more..
Cross Eyed Mary...again an instant grab, because of the unusual bass and flute intro.......what's not to like!!!
Cheap Day Return..hit me between the eyes because I love that acoustic sound, what a lovely little tune I thought.
Mother Goose - Fantastic..I remember thinking "Thats recorders he's using!!!!!!" Wayhay, 1st time I heard a recorder in rock.
Wond'ring Aloud.. Ahhhh, has to be one of the nicest songs ever........beautiful.....
Up to Me - Was so quirky and strange......but dark and heavy too....if you turned up the volume it was a tad scary.....loved it!!!!!
My God....Here we go, for me the best track on the album, I loved the flute and the choir.....amazing, I was blown away// Powerful and thought-provoking.
Hymn 43.....An out and out rocker......Slipstream..beautiful..Locomotive Breath and Wind Up best rock tracks I had heard!!!!!
The packaging itself was a work of art, the lovely texture of the gatefold sleeve, the inner painting of the banquet which is brilliant. The back cover with the biblical type text, I have always loved those written words.
The front cover of Aqualung......say no more..........
