The title of the thread might be snappy and the question might mean something else on a One Direction fan page however to us "seasoned" listeners both of vintage and taste it will hopefully be a long, lingering look at what would we would now consider to be our favourite songs of all time.
Black Is The Colour
A traditional ballad that has been interpreted and performed by numerous artists over the last several years.
There is some controversy over where the original ballad originated. There is an early Appalachian folk version, but as in so many Appalachian songs, it probably crossed the ocean from Scotland in the early days of settling North America.
One of the most poignant line is "I go to the Clyde" - proof its Scottish roots.
John Jacob Niles, a Kentuckian folk singer and composer adapted the song in the 1940's, composing a new tune for it as he didn't like the original, calling it "downright terrible"
Hamish Imlac is noted as bringing it to recent attention in the sixties folk revival.
I contribute to a Glasgow website and I have put out the question as to the meaning of the lyrics. I read somewhere that it was about love lost through death but I'm not sure if I was getting mixed up with the song "Loch Lomond" which is thought to be about a soldier dying at war.
Most people think highly of Christy Moore's version - I'm stuck between the beautiful orchestral version of Cara Dillon's (especially the intro) although I've gone off her voice a bit - a bit too childlike. I'm not a great fan of Christy Moore either.
I've stuck in both versions here - not the most popular Moore one - I prefer this more gentle, acoustic approach.
Either way it is one of the most beautiful, haunting melodic songs and one of my favourite all time songs.
Black is the colour of my true love's hair, Her lips are like some roses fair, She's the sweetest smile, And the gentlest hands, I love the ground, Whereon she stands.
I love my love and well she knows, I love the ground, whereon she goes, I wish the day, it soon would come, When she & I could be as one.
I go to the Clyde and I mourn and weep, For satisfied, I ne'er can be, I write her a letter, just a few short lines, And suffer death, a thousand times.

Too many to contemplate fully I suppose the following are songs which get the "juices flowing" somewhat when the mood takes me. Stand by for a few odd ones - in no particular order Aqaba - June Tabor Kashmir - Led Zeppelin Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty Silvertown Blues - Mark Knopfler

My favorite song is Tool's "Prison Sex." The album it's on, Undertow, is extremely dark and intense and really resonated with me when I was younger. The group's anger when dealing with weighty subject matter came across as earnest rather than contrived. Prison Sex is one of their most powerful and disturbing numbers, as it's about the cyclical (and sickening) consequences of child abuse. Just as striking is the video they made for the song, which features a legless little doll-like creature in a stop-motion-based sequence of nightmarish events.
Other tunes among my absolute favorites include Rush's "Subdivisions" and "Limelight," Tull's "Acres Wild," Helmet's "You Borrowed," and Nirvana's "Lounge Act."

Not meant to accuse your choice of being juvinille but just to mention, in 8th grade,,my favorite song in the world was 'Taxi' by Harry Chapin. Thing is, I'm a sucker for a song with a strong story line. It was at the time the only HC song you'd hear on the radio here in Blighty. Hello honey it's me. What did you think when you heard me back on the radio? And what did the kids say when they knew it was their long-lost daddy-o? Remember how we listened to the radio And I said, "That's the place to be" And how I got the job as an FM jock the day you married me? It was two kids and I was into AM rock, but I just had to run around It's been ages since I left you babe, Let me tell you 'bout what's gone down: CHORUS I am the morning DJ at W.O.L.D. Playing all the hits for you Wherever you may be The bright good morning voice Who's heard but never seen Feeling all of 45, going on 15 The drinking I did on my last big gig Made my voice go low They said that they like the young sounds When they let me go So I drifted on down to Tulsa, Oklahoma To do me a late night talk show Now I've worked my way down home again Here to Boise, Idaho, that's how this buisness goes CHORUS I've been making extra money doing high school sock-hops I'm a big time guest MC You should hear me talking to the little children And listen to what they say to me I got a spot on the top of my head Just begging for a new toupe and a tire round my gut from sitting on my **** But it's never gonna go away Sometimes I get this crazy dream that I just take off in my car, But you can travel on ten thousand miles and still stay where you are. I been thinkin' that I should stop this jockin' and start that record store, Maybe I could settle down, if you'd take me back once more. Okay, honey I see I guess he's better than me Sure old girl, I understand You don't have to worry I'm such a happy man CHORUS

That's what Harry Chapin does......Taxi and Cat's Cradle also mini-dramas in few minutes songs...too bad he wasn't more appreciated. Billy Joel not fit to sharpen Chapin's pencil as far as I'm concerned.

This is a good chance for some of you Luddites to learn the art of posting Youtube videos - we have a tutorial somewhere. Ready For The Stormby the wonderful Dougie Maclean ,songwriter, performer and producer. Written in homage to his fisherman ancestors from the Islands. Has his own "Cropredy"- an autumnal festival called Perthshire Amber www.perthshireamber.com/ The waves crash in and the tide tide pulls out It's an angry sea but there is no doubt That the lighthouse will keep shining out to warn the lonely sailor And the lightning strikes and the wind cuts cold through the sailor's bones, to the sailor's soul Till there's nothing left that he can hold except the rolling ocean CHORUS But I am ready for the storm, yes sir, ready I am ready for the storm, I'm ready for the storm Oh give me mercy for my dreams Cause every confrontation seems To tell me what it really means to be this lonely sailor But when the sky begins to clear and the sun it melts away my fear I'll cry a silent weary tear for those that need to love me The distance it is no real friend And time will take its time And you will find that in the end it brings you me, the lonely sailor And when you take me by your side you love me warm, you love me and I should have realized I had no reason to be frightened
