Prog Rock Deep Cuts #43 is now available for streaming! This week, Deep Cuts returns to celebrate its debut show on the wonderful houseofprog.com! I'll be featuring new music from Syd Arthur, a modern band who combine the pop leanings of Caravan with the decidedly more psych sounds of Gong. Also on the program, I'll have brand new music from Kavus Torabi (Cardiacs, Gong, Guapo) and his sensationally sensational 8 piece, bassoon-laden monster Knifeworld and their new record The Unraveling. You can also expect an airing of the full-length interview with Adele Schmidt and Jose Zegarra Holder - directors of the Romantic Warriors film series (progdocs.com) which I previewed on Youtube a few weeks ago. To make it even more enticing, I'll be throwing in some choice Canterbury tracks from such excellent groups as Caravan, Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North, and The Wrong Object. I bet you're excited! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-43/

Hello everyone! Prog Rock Deep Cuts #44 is now available for streaming! On this week's Deep Cuts, I've got a plethora of progressive goods! First off, I'll have some brand new Renaissance - an excellent 1970s symphonic / folk band. The new record, Symphony of Light, features the entire 2012 touring band, including the late, great Michael Dunford. The album, their first in nearly a decade, also boasts an excellent guest spot from Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) on Flute! Additionally, I'll also have a brand new remix from Gentle Giant and Steven Wilson, 1974's The Power and the Glory. The album has been remixed in glorious 5.1 and stereo, revealing some hidden detail and nuance thought to be lost forever in the mastertape! You can also expect some newly released live music from Steve Hillage, guitarist of the legendary psych / prog band Gong, medieval proggers Gryphon and their excellent Red Queen to Gryphon Three, along with choice cuts from Knifeworld, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Supersister, King Crimson, Can, and so much more! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-44/

Hello everyone! Prog Rock Deep Cuts #45 is now available for Streaming! On this week's Deep Cuts, I've got a more eclectic array of progressive music than you can shake an out-of-tune mellotron at! First off, I'll have some classic music from 1970's Dutch masters Supersister and their tremendous debut effort Present from Nancy. Renown in the heyday of progressive music for both their high musicianship and their irreverent sense of humor, Supersister combine Canterbury influenced, fuzz bass infused jazz rock with an almost Zappa-esque knack for taking a simple pop song and turning it on its head. In addition to this, I'll also be playing music from indie-pop jazzers Pixel as well as music from Univers Zero in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the seminal Heresie record. Lastly, I'll top it off with some choice cuts from Doctor Nerve, an American group set to appear at this year's RIO Festival who sound something like Eric Dolphy crossed with thrash metal as well as some Gong, echolyn, King Crimson, Zappa, and more! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-45/

Hey Ian B.,....does anyone ever mention the influence of The Grateful Dead 1972 tour on first wave Euro-Prog giants like Gong, Hawkwind, Can etc? I know the Dead aren't prog...but I also know their undefiniable, free-form, wild-ass jams all over Europe that year rocked the worlds of those Euro-proggers.

Hello everyone, Prog Rock Deep Cuts #47 is now available for streaming! If you love progressive rock, you won't want to miss this week's Deep Cuts! On this week's show, I'll be featuring some brand new, hot-off-the-press, MoeTar! Their second release, Entropy of the Century, demonstrates a modern progressive rock band at the height of their powers. Led by the angelic voice of Moorea Dickason, MoeTar combine an almost pop songwriting style with instrumental and technical fireworks at opportune moments. Also on the program, I'll be joined by Helaine Burch, head of public relations for the ProgDay festival, for a short interview. You can read more information about this year's ProgDay at progday.net. You can also expect some music from 70's Krautrock legends CAN and their seminal Future Days record. In addition to this, I'll also have some music from classic, mellotron-soaked folkers Strawbs, RIO legends Henry Cow, live Frank Zappa, rare live Jethro Tull from 1980, Argentinean avant-jazzers Bubu, and more! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-47/

Hello everyone! Prog Rock Deep Cuts #51 is now available for streaming! On this week's Deep Cuts, I've got so much great music I don't know what to do with it! First up, I'll be featuring brand new music from NYC-based "ethereal" chamber proggers The Cellar and Point and their brand new debut record entitled, ambit. This is excellent, unpredictable chamber rock with lots of classical instrumentation - vibraphone, violin, acoustic guitar, but also with a pronounced modern, electronic edginess. The Cellar and Point, have a definite avant-garde influence here, and have a rare ability to be both challenging and cutting edge, yet lyrical and melodic simultaneously. In a word, beautiful. Also on the program, I'll have some classic music from Krautrock pioneers Neu! (pronounced noy) and their self-entitled debut record. With endless repetitive grooves that build, develop, and mutate across time, space, and consciousness, Neu!'s debut recording is an essential piece of history to the experimental rock connoisseur! All this and more! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-51/

Hello everyone! Prog Rock Deep Cuts #52 is now available for streaming! On this week's Deep Cuts, I'll be featuring some recent music from Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores. Trippy, melodic, heavy, retro, and modern all at once, Alec K. Redfearn's Sister Death is a 70's infused psychedelic folk journey that combines hypnotic rhythms with acidic, distorted electric guitar. Added to the sonic soup, we have Redfearn's Alice Cooper inspired vocal delivery, augmented by angelic female vocals and the unmistakable sound of the Hammond B-3 organ. Mix that in with the accordion and magic ensues! Also on the program, I'll be featuring a sizable offering from 1970's Krautrockers Ash Ra Tempel and their mind-bending self-titled debut. Recorded and released in 1971, Ash Ra Tempel offers a trip to the cosmos in their unique take on symphonic and destructive rock music. Imagine swirling synths, repetitive drumbeats, and the distinct sound of the wah and you might have an idea of the intergalactic exploration I'm about to lead you on. Prepare thyself. www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-52/

Thanks Patti Hi Patti, Glad you like my special effects - compiled and mixed them myself (with the help of some internet samples!!) The name of the rabbit record is Grand Opening and Closing by Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. The style is kind of an avant garde metal with growly, shouty vocals (not unlike Captain Beefheart). The music is definitely inspired by mid 70's King Crimson as much as it pulls from the modern metal scene. Totally not for everyone, but totally great in my opinion. Thanks for listening!

Hello everyone, Deep Cuts #55 is now available for streaming! Join me for a special interview with composer Joee Conroy from the Kentucky-based Chamber prog group, Ut Gret! Ut Gret are a highly creative modern progressive rock band with roots dating back to the 70s, with influences including Fred Frith (Henry Cow), King Crimson, Pentangle, Gong and others! On this special interview, I converse with Joee in a very personal and informal manner, discussing such topics as Joee's influences, the dedication it takes to maintain a modern progressive rock band, and Joee's experiences with the legendary Giorgio Gomelsky, band manager and concert promoter known for his work with The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Magma, Gong, and Soft Machine. Also on the program, I'll have some new music from Belgian chamber rock group, Aranis and their new record, Made in Belgium II, some brand new live Necromonkey recorded on their recent Eastern US tour, as well music from Discipline, Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores, The Knells, and Frogg Cafe. www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-55/

Hello everyone! Deep Cuts #56 is now available for streaming! On this week's Deep Cuts, I bring you another varied and thrilling collection of progressive music from throughout the ages! First up, I'll be featuring new music from Texas based instrumental proggers Stop Motion Orchestra and their debut recording Instant Everything! Though I wouldn't necessarily call it instant, the new record does seem to have a little bit of everything. Jazz influences, electronic influences, and folk influences all walk hand in hand with wacky time signatures, offbeat rhythms, sax solos, and even a bit of car chase music! You won't want to miss this. Also on program, I'll have new music from Belgian Chamber proggers Aranis and their recent Made in Belgium II album, as well as recent live music from Detroit symphonic legends Discipline, new live Necromonkey, Panzerpappa, The Cellar and Point, Magma, Mats / Morgan, Frogg Cafe and more! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-56/

Hello everyone! Deep Cuts #57 is now available for streaming! On this week's Deep Cuts, weirdness, wildness, and wonderment abound! First up, I'll be featuring the new album from the new lineup of classic Canterbury / space / otherworldly proggers, the legendary Gong! The new record is a tremendously funky, fun addition to the Gong legend with some of the most mind-bending and truly progressive ROCK I've heard all year. Of course, the classic voice of Daevid Allen leads the charge, but musically this new, younger Gong band adds a fresh energy and anarchy to the proceedings that recalls more Camembert Electrique than the Radio Gnome Trilogy. Hear it here, hear hear! Additionally, I'll be featuring the reissue of Lick My Decals Off, Baby - the seminal recording from Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, as part of the newly released Sun Zoom Spark 4 disc boxed set. I'll top it off with music from Zamla Mammaz Manna, Gentle Giant, Anna Phoebe, Syd Arthur, Martin Barre, Peter Hammill, and much more! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/deep-cuts-57/

Hello everyone, Deep Cuts #58 is now available for streaming! This week's show is all about DEPTH. Even though the show is called Prog Rock DEEP Cuts, rarely do I have the opportunity to give you an in-depth examination of an artist and due to this, tonight's show is all about getting to know three brilliant - yet quite different artists - a little bit better. This week's show is all about Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa, and Guapo. I knew you wouldn't mind. www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-58/

Hello everyone! Deep Cuts #61 is now available for streaming! Deep Cuts returns this week to spin your head once more with the greatest forgotten tracks of the past and the unheard tracks of the future! My good buddy, Mike Lieto joins us again this week for a series that has turned into The Hobbit trilogy of radio shows! Although I hesitate to call this Part 3 of The Best of 2014, as usual a large portion of this week's show will be devoted to music released in recent months. First off, I'll have some recent music from American group Secret Chiefs 3 and their latest offering, Ishraqiyun - Perichoresis. With a style rooted in Eastern folk timbres and modes, the sound on this record is earthy and dark, but with a surprising energy and electronic edge. Pretty compelling stuff! In addition to this, you will also hear a selection from Martin Barre (Jethro Tull), Indonesian fusion wonders, simakDialog, some rare live Cardiacs from 1987, Kate Bush's The Dreaming, Yes, Genesis, and so much more! Phew. Join us!! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/prog-rock-deep-cuts-61/

Hello everyone! It's been a long time since I posted, but Deep Cuts is still going strong! You can listen to the most recent show (#22) here. It features (among other things), a modern group called Blood Ceremony. Think Benefit-era Tull meets Sabbath meets Fairport, with flute. No joke! www.mixcloud.com/progrockdeepcuts/progrock-deep-cuts-episode-22/Also, if you would like to receive my Press Releases, drop me a line at progrockdeepcuts@gmail.com and I'll add you to the mailing list! Ian www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/the-second-chicago-doomed-and-stoned-festival-gets-lit-with-three-heavyweight-headliners/Content?oid=70494248The second Chicago Doomed and Stoned Festival gets lit with three heavyweight headliners By Monica Kendrick For its second year, the first with new partners Empire Productions, the two-day Chicago Doomed and Stoned Festival has scored some big names: on Friday the headliners are Florida heavy legends Torche, warming up for the July arrival of their new album, Admission; on Saturday, they’re occult-rock primogenitors Coven, who formed in Chicago in the late 60s, and eerie flute-wielding Canadian witch rockers Blood Ceremony. Led by front woman Alia O’Brien, Blood Ceremony work their penchant for folk-magic aesthetics and their obvious Jethro Tull influence into a distinctively sparse, primitive fairyland sound. In January the group released a melancholy new single, “Lolly Willows” on Rise Above (the B side is a cover of the Who’s “Heaven and Hell”), a tight, compact song within which O’Brien fluidly transitions between tranced-out oracle and soul-hunting banshee. Make sure to come early and invest the time to savor all 15 bands, because this is also a great showcase for up-and-comers: to my ears the standouts are Louisiana’s stormy, trippy Forming the Void, twisted Vegas-based apocalyptic doom creepers Demon Lung, local thrash- and punk-influenced riffmeisters Uncouth, and Asheville’s superheavy Americana-inflected mountain-man sludgelords Bask, but there’s not a weak link in the chain.
