Found out that the opposite of "compression" is "expansion" and one doesn't need specialized "expansion" software to do it. While compression in software usually shows as a "+" number to dial in, expansion is not a negative setting, but a setting between 1.0 and 0.0. The effect seems to apply exponentially in degree as one drops below 1.0, so that one should explore fine grades of options below 1.0, such as 0.97, 0.95, 0.92, 0.87, etc. 0.85 can be far too much effect.
Definition: Compression usually means reducing the range of volume dynamics of the music, which can involve quieting down the loudest peaks and increasing the volume of the quietest parts. Expansion applies the opposite effect, which, if the music was over-compressed originally, can give the music back some of the "live" feel, by increasing the volume dynamics. However, compression can be a very destructive process, and expansion can't be expected to totally reverse a compression process done earlier.
The better the software, the more options provided over how this entire process is applied.
