While Tull are far and away my favorite band, I also love Marillion, particularly the Steve Hogarth era. Does anyone else here like them? "Afraid of Sunlight" is one of my favorite albums, and their latest, "Sounds That Can't Be Made," is already threatening to take its place atop my list of Marillion releases.

I'm a fan of the Fish era particulary the first album 'script for a jesters tear' - I also saw Fish as a solo artist and as I recall he had a superb guitarist with him who's name I can't remember!! I know I have a bunch of MP3s that I yank out and listen to every so often. I'm pretty sure there's a double CD album I have in my collection. With Market Square Heroes on it. It's awesome and a great listen.

Can't say that I am a huge fan to be honest, but I do remember Fish being on the same bill as Jethro Tull at the 1993 Tarlair Festival.
It was a cracking day out up there on the Moray Firth!

I will always remember seeing Marillion for the first time at Nostell Priory where a chap called Ian Anderson gave them a break in the musical industry after they sent Ian a demo tape. Marillion where very good that day and went down very well with the crowd. The only other time I saw Fish and the boys was at The Milton Keynes Bowl where they where the headline band. Great memories.

Great memories. Think you'll have to organise a Milton Keynes Bowl reunion event - so many Tull fans went there and never met up ! I like Marillion but never to the extent of getting any albums prefering to get a cassette copy of a couple of their lp's. Apart from JT, I always preferred Big Country and Runrig - two astonishing bands imo.

Thanks for your opinions, everyone! They make for very interesting reading. It would have been cool to see Fish era Marillion with Tull in the 1980s! And...Jack in the Green, I agree about the song "Power." What a powerful track! (groans at own use of bad pun!) David

I only listened to 1 Marillion album "Script For A Jester's Tear". I was impressed and distressed because it sounded like a Genesis cover band.

Well, the first Marillion singer, Fish, is a huge fan of Gabriel era Genesis (apparently). He led the band for its first four albums (when they had their biggest commercial success in the UK and Europe, admittedly). But from their fifth album onward, Fish was replaced by Steve Hogarth. The band have made 12 albums with Hogarth and this is the era that really excites me. I like the Fish stuff, but it just doesn't move me like the Hogarth era. Trust me, they no longer sound like a "Genesis cover band," to use your quote! Very few people seem to like both eras equally. You usually find "Fish people" and "Hogarth people!" I'm a Hogarth man! I only saw the band once, in 1997, but I am a huge fan and, like I said earlier in this thread, their latest album is AMAZING! David

Although I kinda miss Fish.

Love Marillion, great band. I like both the Fish and the Hogarth era line-up's, but I suppose it's the Fish era stuff that is the classic Marillion. Hogarth is a fine singer, technically better than Fish but Fish's voice is more distinctive in my opinon, even though Fish was very influenced by Peter Hamill/Peter Gabriel. 'Afraid Of Sunlight' is the best Hogarth Marillion album for me, it's superb. Some of the albums since then have been a bit bland, and I don't like the way that the Hogarth Marillion try so hard to be Radiohead, and it is pretty clear that Hogarth really wishes they hadn't kept the Marillion name when he joined, he said that in an interview, but without that name and the Fish era Marillion legacy, the 'new' line-up (Not new now obvously) would be selling very few albums and appearing at a working men's club in your area. Having said that, the track 'Gaza' on the new album is, well, pretty awesome.

Never cared for Marillion. Fish sounds like Peter Gabriel mated with Peter Hammill of VdGG, and not doing a fair approximation of either. But then I can't stand much prog from the 80s, including Tull.

Probably my fav album ever is Clutching at Straws - it is a masterpiece and like most I was a Fish fan.......however I was given Best of Both Worlds as a gift - a double cd - one cd from Fish era and the other the H era - after a year I'd only ever listened to the Fish CD but then I started listening to the H one - now I only ever listen to H - he has developed Marillion into a different beast and I can't get enough - and yes, even now Clutching at Straws is my favourite and I miss Fish and many of his tracks soar to the top of my list, but Marillion with H is something I've grown into and can't let go - I think they are a remarkable band and have gotten better - they deserve a much bigger audience

Although I'm not a Marillion fan as such I'm quite appreciative of their music and with their connection to the Tull "chronicles" I certainly wouldn't dismiss them out of hand. What I do admire about them however is the way they've produced albums using the financial backing of their wide fan base which has enabled them to continue to make albums. It's an idea that IA has never attempted although Mick Abrahams used the scheme many years ago, for an album through A New Day, with much success. jethrotull.proboards.com/thread/2110/lies

I am a MARILLION fan. Saw them in Rome, in 2007.
Fish-era was a rebirth for prog-rock music, in a way only a Genesis-fan can understand. Love all 4 albums with Fish, "Misplaced Childhood" and "Script" above all.
Hogarth's direction is totally different but with great music, too. The Best studio album from 2nd Marillion period is, in my opinion, THIS STRANGE ENGINE.
Long Life to Marillion & Jethro Tull!

For a long time I only listened to the first album, and only in the last couple of years got into Clutching At Straws, which I reckon is their best album - it is a genuinely superb.
Never got into the Hogarth era stuff, never liked Genesis (sorry Genesis fans)
This track is a belter.

I was never a fan although I do have some memorabilia given to me by Fish, promo discs etc Myself and me ex hubbie had the pleasure of knowing Fish and his then wife, Tammy ( of the video Kayleigh) on a personal level. They lived not far from us and my ex - himself a musician had known Fish from the early days of gigs in Edinburgh and had bumped into him again many years later. Fish took us ( and some of the rest of Marillion) to see Pink Floyd in or around 1988 ( I think) at Wembley and we went by limo from his house to the venue. That's a great memory We had VIP passes and it was funny in the bar after the concert seeing who was a PF fan. I stood next to David Gower the cricketer chatting about the concert! Fish was/is a generous and lovely bloke. We went back to his house and partied and we kept on the mutual Xmas card list for a while afterwards. i64.images obliterated by tinypic/1zogcgl.jpg[/IMG] i65.images obliterated by tinypic/263vrq0.jpg[/IMG]
