Looking forward to his new output. Have to say big thanks to him (cept I don't know him personally of course!).... cause I read online a piece where he extolled the vitues of a wee amp he really liked - one he said was amazing (sound) and that you could 'carry onto a plane as hand luggage!' I bought the 18 watt valve amp in question - he was right - it sounds absolutly marvellous! It has a power 'soak' and can run flat-out ace valve amp sounds at either 18w or 5w or 1 watt! - it even gives a DI to recording gear (emulated speaker sound) with no need for a speaker - thus meaning you can reord a full-on valve amp 'silently' - very useful for my home recs - not disturbing the Lady Pamela asleep in the house while I have a late night session recording! Thanks Martin!

Was at Clipstore, Leeds, two days this week - mastering and sorting the artwork for my own band's latest album - when I spotted on one of the menus on the computer screens, in front of me, a certain 'name'! It seems Clipstore had handled the production of a Martin Barre 'mini' CD last year - apparently 'live' and some sort of 'demos' - not for sale, I was told. I do hope then, if 'live' recs have been made of his current output, that they might be available to purchase one day - would look forward to that!

Maybe it only just went up there, but recommend everybody go by Martins's page when you get a chance, he has bits from those tracks up there, and as I suspected it sounds good. Now to equate it with any Tull record, that record would assuredly be the Christmas Album. Maybe not great news to everybody, but don't worry, as we saw/heard in his shows from the north, he definitely brings the hammer along for the live shows, sure thought what last I heard sounded real good. Anyway, in these days of extraordinary musical riches, often for free, this sounds to be one this pauper would certainly part with his WONGA to procure a copy. Way to go Martin, such a respectful take on that which has been his heart and soul and life's work.

He's been true to his word about recording IA compositions in a sympathetic manner and one word sums it up for me - exquisite. www.martinbarre.com/player/index.cfm

Progressive rock, Rock Music — July 31, 2013 at 9:50 am ‘I’m happier with the people I’m working with’: Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre set to release rare solo effortby Nick DeRiso somethingelsereviews.com/2013/07/31/im-happier-with-the-people-im-working-with-jethro-tulls-martin-barre-set-to-release-rare-solo-effort/Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre will release his first album in a decade, and his first since Ian Anderson decided to produce a sequel to the band’s classic Thick as a Brick as a solo project. Away with Words, due on September 28, 2013 via RSK’s Edifying Records, will feature new Barre originals as well as updates of songs from Tull’s late-1970s recordings. Barre is offering samples of new tracks to be included on Away with Words via his web site at martinbarre.com. The reworked Tull songs include “From a Deadbeat to an Old Greaser,” from 1976′s Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll: Too Young to Die!, “Fire at Midnight” from 1977′s Songs from the Wood; “Moths” from 1978′s Heavy Horses; and “Home” from 1979′s Stormwatch Barre has been active on the road recently as well, touring with his group New Day and participating in an all-star concert billed as the Legends of Rock featuring original Fleetwood Mac members Mick Fleetwood and Jeremy Spencer, Asia’s John Wetton, a trio of members of Supertramp and Yes’ Jon Anderson, among others. Barre joined Jethro Tull in 1969, as the group rounded into form. His distinctive guitar work can be heard on a number of their signature tunes, including “Locomotive Breath,” “Cross-Eyed Mary” and “Aqualung.” The guitarist, along with drummer Doane Perry, would become one of the few constants in a group that’s seen ever-shifting lineups around Anderson. Neither, however, was invited to participate in Anderson’s new follow up to the 1972 magnum opus they created together. Though obviously stung by Anderson’s move to release Thick As a Brick 2 without him, Barre was upbeat in an interview with Goldmine: “I’m very positive about everything right now,” he said. “I’m happier with the people I’m working with. I don’t have a problem with what’s happening. It will all level out.” Anderson, meanwhile, has presented this time apart as a chance for Barre to receive some long-overdue notice as a solo artist. “It’s nice to have a bit of a life of your own, and be recognized as an individual, rather than just as that bloke who plays guitar in Jethro Tull,” Anderson said in an exclusive SER Sitdown. “It’s important to me, let alone him, that he’s recognized as an individual by name for his work over the years and his contributions to the sound of Jethro Tull. It’s good that he’s doing these things. I look forward to hearing the fruits of his efforts in the months to come.”

I wonder if Jonathan Noyce got 'Leveled Out' after his last minute cancellation to Barcelona? Jim I think Martin was very upset with John, I also believe that Alan Bray is a great guitar bass player, do not think is a problem for Martin, last year John Noyce leave to Martin several concerts at the last minute. John is not a person to trust, he plays where is better paid...

Album sounds very interesting! Personally I am pleasantly relieved that it's not really the out'n'out Tull covers album that some people were hoping for. Martin appears to have taken those IA compositions that he feels he can do justice to (which we've alluded to before on the Forum about them being his legacy as well as IA's) and has also included some of his own compositions. Whether he's noted the remarks made a year or so ago about the MB Band not just turning into a tribute band is an argument which is likely to continue for some time. It's one release I'm looking forward to listening to and also hoping that it is going to sell well and be successful.

I know with TAAB2 none of the record stores left in Newcastle had it on the official day of release.

Progressive rock, Rock Music, Uncategorized — September 28, 2013 at 10:31 am Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre – Away with Words (2013)by Nick DeRiso There is much to recommend here for Martin Barre’s stalwart Jethro Tull fans, including sensitive new takes on eight lesser-known Tull tracks. He even takes up the flute. It seems, before he moves into a still-vibrant future, Jethro Tull’s long-time guitarist aims to reclaim his corner of the band’s legacy. Largely acoustic, and ageless in its simple beauty, Away with Words — due this week from RSK’s Edifying Records– begins in a telling way: Barre pairs the sun-filled original “First Light” with Jethro Tull’s “Moths” from 1978′s Heavy Horses. And so it goes, for most of Barre’s new album: “One Brown Mouse,” also from Jethro Tull’s Heavy Horses, flows into “Fat Cat.” “Snapshot” morphs into “Paparazzi” from 1984′s Under Wraps.”Spare a Thought” becomes “From A Dead Beat To An Old Greaser” from 1976′s Too Old to Rock ‘n’ Roll: Too Young to Die! “Fire at Midnight” from 1977′s Songs from the Wood leads directly into “From the Ashes.” The effect is to make clear his legacy, even as Barre forges — with a remarkable delicacy, considering some of the monstrous solo asides he’s taken on the electric guitar at Tull shows over the years — ahead on his own. To be sure, Away with Words is more of an appetizer than multi-course meal for those looking for something determinedly new. The imaginative “All Bars Hold” is a tasty, if ever so brief, glimpse into the magic of his stand-alone work; “Sundown,” with its remarkable double-tracked guitars, opens with a classicist’s flourish before Barre begins constructing a thrilling finale. There’s no small amount of catharsis in his scalding turn — finally! — on the electric guitar. But, just like that, Away with Words is over. Along the way, both “Pussy Willow,” from Jethro Tull’s 1982 effort The Broadsword and the Beast, and “Protect And Survive” from 1980′s A are given complete, but never too careful, readings. Meanwhile, former Tull bassist Jonathan Noyce is on board, and the Celtic-infused “Lament of the Spalpeen/Martin’s Jig/Hymn” finds Barre taking up former bandmate Ian Anderson’s instrument of choice — as definitive a move as there could be for those wondering what’s ahead for a musical partnership in Jethro Tull that has stretched back to 1969. If it is, in fact, all over (and all signs, both here and in the Anderson camp seem to be pointing that way), then Away with Words serves as both a stirring valedictory and a too-often tantilizingly brief introduction into the next phase of this criminally overlooked figure’s musical journey. Along with founder Ian Anderson, Martin Barre’s stonking guitar riffs have driven a string of hit albums (and occasionally singles) scored by rock legends Jethro Tull for more than 40 years. Barre replaced orginal lead guitarist Mick Abrahams after Tull’s debut album This Was, immediately scoring a big hit single with Living In The Past and a number one album, Stand Up, from which the band took off into the stratosphere, touring heavily in America as well as Europe, notching more hit albums including Benefit, Aqualung, Thick As A Brick and Passion Play. But it’s not the numbers at a gig but the quality of the music that matters to Martin, who is looking forward to bringing his six-piece outfit to Hebden Bridge Trades Club on Sunday, October 6. Martin is promising a high-energy show mixing Tull classics with blues standards and Barre-penned rock originals. “We’ll be playing some of the early Tull stuff like Teacher and Minstrel In The Gallery, some blues standards and some rock things, a really edgy gig, a lot of fun stuff and high energy. “Some of the Tull material, I haven’t played it for 30 years so it sounds really fresh and I really liked the blues but it was always performed in a really boring way,” he said. Barre always found the work of players like Gary Moore more interesting and might be an indicator of his own approach. With Ian Anderson touring the States under his own name with a solo follow-up to Thick As A Brick, Tull’s status is a bit uncertain. “The book’s open but it may not ever happen again,” says Martin. Old mates Fairport Convention have told him of the Trades’ qualities. It’s smaller than the Isle of Wight gig in 1970, but that’s irrelevant to Martin. “Isle of Wight was the biggest in numbers I’ve played but in my mind it doesn’t matter how many people you play to. Some of my best memories are playing really small venues where the atmosphere has been really good,” he said. - Tull Tales: Formed in 1967, Martin Barre joined the band a year later in time to play on their number one album Stand Up. In 1970, Tull starred at the Isle of Wight Festival, before an audience the Guinness Book of Records estimates at 600,000 or possibly 700,000. As well as hit albums, they have notched top 20 hit singles including Sweet Dream and The Witch’s Promise.
