Has anyone ever made a Christmas song you can listen to in the summer?! I don't know but it surely hasn't stopped Ian from performing his Christmas songs in the summer!

Tull's best studio album? Although it may sound obvious, I would have to say Thick as a Brick. It is a complete work, fully realized, a true "progressive rock" album from an era when excellent progressive rock albums were regularly churned out (this has become more evident in hindsight). The playing is masterful. Very few bands can sustain interest over the course of 20 minutes (I defer to the "standard" length of an album side). To do it over the course of two album sides is even more impressive.
Aqualung is very nearly its equal. It has endured. It still sounds great despite being played to death on classic rock radio over the years (decades!)
Benefit is a great rock album that contains two of Tull's best songs ever (With You There to Help Me and To Cry You a Song). Actually, each of these albums has been at the summit of my own personal "Tull's best studio album" list. Thick as a Brick currently sits at the top.

I put Benefit sixth, followed by Passion Play seventh. Musically, I place Passion Play in the top five, the singing and music may actually be Tull's best, but conceptually and lyrically I hold the album in disregard, hence its relatively low rank in my personal Tull pantheon. For reasons I discussed on the old board, I felt Passion Play was a mean-spirited and cynical joke by Ian on his audience.

A Passion Play is brilliant musically, but it just seems like a bit of a comedown after Thick as a Brick. Or is it unfair to compare the two?
Also, I deduct points for the silly Hare Who Lost His Spectacles interlude. Sorry, it sounds like forced whimsy.
Why is no one mentioning Minstrel in the Gallery? Not at the very top for me personally but it's very good.

Has any band, ever, done anything like the Aqualung thru Minstrel streak? No!

For me it's: Passion Play Minstrel Warchild 20 Years Heavy Horses
20 Years is there 'cos I remember, as a teenager, anticipating its release and then being for a few weeks in musical paradise listening to the unreleased tracks -- Chateau d'Isaster in particular.

Stand Up is probably my favorite album overall, followed by Heavy Horses. Minstrel in the Gallery, Catfish Rising, and The Broadsword and the Beast are other personal favorites.

I never had to choose before, but at the moment it would be Minstrel in the Gallery, Crest of a Knave, Stormwatch, A Passion Play, and Thick as a Brick.
Although Songs From the Wood and Catfish Rising would be close runner ups.
Hell, all of them would be close runner ups.

Tough to pick just 5. Oh yeah, if anyone picks the Christmas Album they need to be permanently banned from this board. Banning would be too good. Permanent ridicule and derision would be better and a slightly worse form of punishment ;D It has its merits. Also featured on a Planet Rock special with commentary from Ian recently. Also, where is Aqualung Live?

For the '60's Stand Up For the '70's Thick As A Brick If it was down to just one: Minstrel In The Gallery For the '80's The Broadsword And The Beast The doctor to my disease = '90's Catfish Rising
Think round corners, I say.

The top 5 Tull albums are: A Passion Play Thick as a Brick Minstrel in the Gallery War Child Aqualung
The following albums 'bubble under' the top 5;
Benefit, SFTW, HH, Crest, Stormwatch, Rock island and Under Wraps
then:
Stand Up, Too Old, Roots, Broadsword, Dot Com and 'A'
then:
This Was, Catfish Rising
compilations, live and Xmas albums have been skipped.

This is the classic answer difficult to give for every Fan,i believe. Best studio Album,mmmhh..we can to judge an Album from a pure technical point of view and from the heart. I can't live without Catfish Rising. :)The reason is because, for me it it a sort of connection between the "traditionals",and the "modern"J.T.

Difficult one. It really depends on how I'm feeling etc. and I tend to play Tull albums in rotation. Could be a choice between any of them including:
Benefit A Passion Play Thick As A Brick Crest Of A Knave Heavy Horses
Divinities (if you include IA's solo work)
Today it would be TAAB - tomorrow, who knows.

A Passion Play, of course, followed closely by Benefit, snapping at it's heels.

Minstrel In The Gallery is indeed a fine album with one of the classic line-ups. Look forward to reading your posts and thoughts on Tull. Cheers Maddog

Zooming thru this I am a little surprised to see I have not responded. Anyway, I DO like dis.
1 TAAB 2 SFTW 3 Christmas album 4 Stormwatch 5 Stand Up/Roots/Dot Com
Actually if I could remove individual records from the 20 years set, side 4, that other sides of Tull one would be in 5. Also I am sure if I had it, that acoustic Tull one would be in 5, or higher. That one is worth it for a fiend for, on the right day, my favorite Tull track, that acoustic reading of Jack A Lynn. On most days my favorite track is Solstice Bells or the last 17 minutes of Brick. But, it could be anyone, so insatiable are my needs, jam my gob full of it.

Cheers Maddog, thanks for welcome. Just stumbled accross this fine site last week, some very interesting stuff aboard.
Tull my fav band for 35 years now, think its a shame theres no more new albums in last 11 years excluding Xmas jobbie, but at least we still get to see them play live in UK quite frequently.
