Watched 20 minutes of the opening ceremony in our staff canteen before starting work last night - magnificent.
Hope to catch the repeats today and tomorrow. I was only thinking that the Sex Pistols should have reformed, when a 15 second clip of "God Save The Queen" was played during the preamble.
Now if only "Heavy Horses" had been featured . . . . .

Some good comments doing the rounds about the politics of the opening extravaganza. "Where was the giant Thatcher closing down the mines?" and i48.images obliterated by tinypic/2guy0sm.jpg[/IMG]

Losing countries? Is that what she's all pissed off about? Isn't it supposed to be good to be queen?

If our international guests are left with the impression that Britain is contemplative and daft, self-deprecating and clever, organised and whimsical, controlled and rebellious - then the ceremony has done its job.Mark Easton, BBC Home editor www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-19026812Yeah - Rock On UK

08/02/2012 Geopolitics made simple A cheeky free commuter newspaper in Australia has come up with a novel, and slightly controversial, way to figure out which Korea is which. You may wonder why this is necessary. You may have forgotten that the women's soccer match between the Koreas was delayed last Wednesday for an hour when North Korea protested over someone mixing up its flags with the South. And getting its name wrong. The new mX newspaper, which is the Australia equivalent of the Metro chain, distinguished between the two countries on its medal tally list as Nice Korea and Naughty Korea. Not everyone finds this wildly funny (and we haven't even heard from Dear Leader Kim Jong-un). Blog commenter Mynameisjef carped: "You Aussies think this is funny. A newspaper mocking two nations..." For the record, the Star lists the possibly nuclear-armed closed northern dictatorship on the Korean peninsula as PRK in the medal standings. And Nice Korea was the one had two teams which threw a women's badminton doubles game. thestar.blogs.com/london2012/2012/08/geopolitics-made-simple.html

Canada will soon be third or fourth in the medal standings, once they start the canoe building races and the staring dejectedly over seas of wheat at the horizon on the prairies races.

Don't forget, us oldsters need to add all the little breakoff Soviet republics to the Russia score...I think today that puts the old USSR at or near the top.....better living thru biology, anyone? The Chinese athelete bios are scary...if the kids have talent they take them to sports camp/medal farms where they practice, practice, practice when they aren't crying for their annual ten minute visits with the families....sports!

morrissey has been sounding off about the surge the of british nationalism at the games having echoes of nazi germany in the 1930s. yes we're all chuffed, but its like a really pleasant surprise that team GB is doing so well, cos we are so used to being stuffed at sport! its like the weather, we're so grateful for every nice summer day we get. so i say its nothing like national socialism, its just a country which is forgetting its ills for a brief period and enjoying success for a change.

I can't stand Morrissey in fact it gives me an idea for a new thread;
Musicians Who Put You Right Off Their Music When They Open Their Gobs
To compare the enthusiasim to the 1939 Olympics is insulting.
Has he got a record coming out?

It wasn't that long ago he was wrapping himself in the Union Flag. The politics of envy from a pseudo intellectual imho

Wonderful ;D You know, I'm just waiting in anticipation for the moron(s)/cretin(s)/fool(s) who will probably pipe up and say that GB & NI should apologise to the rest of the world for having a successful Olympic Games.
