Hi maroonbeard and welcome to the ForumCross-eyed Mary is indeed a special song among a special bunch of songs. Totally unique from anything I had ever heard before. I like how you described it as a sister song to Aqualung and the similiarities. Love your site - I was looking for song reviews re Broadsword and the Beast Welcome and look forward to your posts - thoughts on TAAB2"? I use 'Cross Eyed Mary' as my morning alarm call. It's perfect because first of all it says 'Mary' so I ignore that as I think it's for someone else. Then the flute starts to gently wake me up, followed by "Who would be a poor man, a beggarman, a thief". Now I'm fully awake and play this song in my head for the rest of the morning.........Perfect. Anyone else wake up to Tull?

Great website....looks like yet another way for me to make use of paid time...they owe me today...a developmentally disabled guy BIT ME. But anyway...the review calls Tull your all time favorite....so you are beyond welcome here.

Crosseyed Mary was one of Tull's best live songs too. I remember how Ian would stand alone in a strobe light playing that tension-building flute introduction. And I love how Ian and Martin exchange that little riff on flute and electric guitar at the end of the song. Beautiful and powerful.

The beginning could well be Ian's finest moment on flute. Truly one of the best beginnings to any song by any band.
