A Message to everyone on the forum from the chaps in Cold FlameWith Cold Flame currently in rehearsal for some JT tribute shows in 2012, it is high time we celebrated by starting a brand new thread on what has become an excellent forum dedicated to Jethro Tull in all its increasingly varied forms. Whilst understanding that there might be those of you on this forum who turn their noses up at pale imitators do consider this. The only reason that Cold Flame play Tull stuff at all is because, whilst Tull material is extremely challenging music to perform live, its such great timeless music and so much fun to play that the end result makes it all worthwhile. Additionally any chance to meet up with fellow Tull fans and wax lyrical or critical about Jethro Tull is a real bonus in itself. So do read on and hopefully we will meet some time fairly soon...probably your place...time to dust down those knee boots again !!! Best wishes to all fellow Tull fans and friends....Patrick and co. A short history on how Cold Flame became an occasional Tull tribute band..from 1998 onwards... Whilst Cold Flame have been around since 1984 it was not until 1998 that any serious consideration was given to performing Tull music as an actual tribute show though some of the early Tull blues tunes like ‘We used to know’ and ‘Some day the sun wont shine for you’ had been performed for some time sans flute. The decision to play more Tull was without doubt influenced by the arrival of flautist Peter Cheetham. Whilst continuing to write, record and perform original material as well as rock and blues standards, Cold Flame set about performing some full scale Jethro Tull tribute shows on a regular basis in some of the premier music venues in the midlands and north of England in which Peter became the focal point. The modicum of success of these shows allowed the band to focus on Jethro Tull tribute shows as a small but vibrant part of the band’s gig calendar and over the years this has been reflected by an increased interest in the band from the media, music promoters and audiences alike. Even when Peter took a sabbatical for a couple of years, the band was able to recruit Derbyshire musician Ben Dalglish who continued the Tull connection with his flute and whistle playing to the fore. When Ben left to pursue other interests, Peter returned and the Flame were able to continue performing as an occasional tribute band specialising in Jethro Tull. Yet it is the enthusiasm and encouragement shown by punters that has been the deciding factor in encouraging Cold Flame to develop this part of their repertoire and this appeal has seen the band performing Tull music in both indoor and outdoor shows in Italy, Austria as well as around the UK. In turn this has led to radio coverage and CD sales in mainland Europe, USA, South America and Australasia. During the last few years the connection with Jethro Tull has been cemented with support slots to both Mick Abrahams Blodwyn Pig and Glen Cornick’s Wild Turkey whilst the band have played with Tull drummers Clive Bunker and Paul Burgess and more recently guest violinist Anna Phoebe who joined the band on stage at The Weyfest Festival in Surrey, England. This must have left a lasting, positive memory for Ms Phoebe who was kind enough to talk about the band in glowing colours during an interview with Classic Rock magazine in 2010. Today the five piece Cold Flame, still fronted by flautist and multi instrumentalist Peter, are recognized as the premier Jethro Tull tribute act in the Midlands and North of England. During 2012 Cold Flame will be presenting a new two hour plus celebration of classic rock, blues and acoustic material spanning the decades from Jethro Tull’s bluesy beginnings in 1968 right through to the present day demonstrating the wonderful music legacy that Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull have given to the world. www.youtube.com/user/coldflametullband66 Cold Flame official website – www.coldflame.com

I have a request for all you guys out there...As the band are currently looking at a number of options as to where to perform in 2012 any venue suggestions that spring to mind where an ageing flute led rock band might just cut the mustard do let us know either on this forum or at info@cold-flame.co.uk
Thanks and please be gentle with us...Pat and co.

Re..suggestions as to where to play...
Appreciate the ideas coming through regarding venues..Okay so just to let you know that we have contacted the venues so far suggested and await news on them.. Tavistock Wharf and Blackwood Miners Institute...not sure what venue to pick in County Durham yet...please do keep those ideas/comments coming through as your collective input really does matter. Obviously by giving such venues a persuasive nod it can help to determine a positive result ie a gig. By the way anyone care to let me know how to add attachments to this thread because I am buggered if I can work it out.Cheers in anticipation.
Be seeing you..Patrick and co.

Thanks Bunkerfan for asking me to review err...my own gig.Oops not neccessarily the easiest or most appropriate thing to do for obvious reasons.Perhaps therefore it is easier to put the gig into some sort of context.
The Jolly Tar is a well established and popular restaurant cum live music venue a few miles from Nantwich deep in the Cheshire countryside. The venue plays host to a variety of quality acoustic and electric acts mainly plucked from the north of England music scene. Cold Flame have played the venue several times over the last four/five years presenting audiences with both original band music as well as Jethro Tull tunes. At the suggestion of manager Ray, we took the decision last year to perform semi Tull tribute gigs in which the band nucleus was joined by guest flautist Mark Parkinson who plays with the band from time to time. The gig last friday was one such event as neither Peter our resident flautist nor new keys player Joe were available.
Cold Flame line up - 23/3/12
Pat Rowbottom - vocals, bass guitar, recorder. Rob Barnes - vocals, acoustic & electric guitars. Phil Marke - drums, percussion, whistle. Mark Parkinson - flute.
Setlist - see earlier post.A couple of the pieces played at the gig were new to Mark but we had enough time pre gig to go through these pieces to both make Mark and ourselves feel a tad more confident.
The gig itself...it is not for me to comment really on the merits of our playing though the feedback received after the gig was good. However there are a couple of things that should be mentioned. Most importantly the venue was only half full and though the gig might well have been affected by Sports Relief this could not fully explain why the turn out was dissapointing.Even the punters who did turn up voiced their surprise and it certainly somehow created an odd feeling that continued through the near two hour performance and created a very polite response from the audience. Yet surprise surprise when I checked feedback after the gig the comments were really very positive and not just from non rabbits and fluffy ducks. I guess you just get gigs like that sometimes where people just sit there and tap their feet but dont really let themselves go.Maybe we ask for too much and at least you could hear a pin drop during the acoustic numbers.
Anyone who was there reading this do feel free to comment.Just remember though its all just a little bit of fun. Be seeing you.... Patrick.

Thanks for the review Patrick it sounds like it was a good night. Pity about the venue only being "half full" but if the audience enjoyed your music then it was all worthwhile. Cheers

Hey Steelmonkey - you mean Daryl Way a key member of the original Curved Air from the start who played some violin parts on the Heavy Horses album in 1978. Daryl is the one with the interesting boots far right in the pic.Check out www.curvedair.com/daryl for a case history Daryl is not part of the current Curved Air touring line up though he has played on most of the band's albums and tours since the beginning. The current as of the last few months, violinist with Curved Air is a guy called Paul Sax. How was Kit Morgan - seems to have been left on the sidelines, as far as Tull history is concerned, which is not deserved as he's a good player.

Thanks guys for approving nods regarding the Cold Flame shots from the Curved Air show on April 28th. Thanks to internet networking and the CF crew we have now assembled a useful collection of pics - the best of which will end up on the Cold Flame website www.coldflame.com as soon as possible which probably means at least 2/3 weeks. I have an admission to make to bunkerfan regarding posting these pics on the forum.I had help from one of our crew otherwise it would still not have happened.Luddite that I am !!! And now to answer maddogfagin's question on Kit Morgan. Firstly Kit is a really good player for sure and his performance in Sale was top rate with some searing solos in a variety of styles that blended perfectly with the rest of the band. He looks good on stage and is a natural showman. Off stage I found him very affable and easy going. Yes we did talk about Tull a bit and in fact he probably asked as many things as I asked him. Much of the discussion centred around the current Tull/Ian Anderson Band situation and there were certainly a few things that he was surprised to learn about most notably stuff around Martin's non involvement in TAAB2. We did talk about his involvement in Ian's solo gigs from a few years back - all interesting stuff but don't ask me to say any more ha !! Cheers for now..Patrick and co x

As for Cold Flame performances, well worth investigating the possibility of some sort of Forum "day out" featuring the band and a mini meet up sometime in the future. Graham/MD

Cold Flame Tull Tribute News - May 2012 Fresh from recent concerts including a support slot with Curved Air, Cold Flame are set to return to the tribute trail within the next two weeks. The five piece band featuring singer/flautist Pete Cheetham are currently rehearsing a brand new stage show in preperation for full scale Jethro Tull tribute shows over the next few months which will feature both classic and rare Tull/Ian Anderson material. As always there will be some Pythonesque moments included with the music which is intended, at least on a good night, to capture some of the spirit of Tull in all its many forms. Several dates have already been confirmed but this is as good an opportunity as any to ask Forum users to add their considerable support and good will both in terms of coming along to one of the gigs if you have a couple of hours to spare, as well as sending us further suggestions on potential venues that might suit the band anywhere in the UK. The chaps look forward to meeting up with friends old and new in the not too distant future as without your good selves things would just not be the same. Cold Flame Tull tribute dates so far confirmed include the following with more to be added...more details at www.coldflame.com Fri June 1 The Forum, Darlington, County Durham. Fri July 13 The Yardbirds Club, Grimsby, North Lincolnshire. Sat Sept 22 The Rockhouse, Eccles, Greater Manchester. Fri Sept 28 The Jolly Tar, Wardle, Nantwich,Cheshire. Sat Jan 26 2013 Moses Gate Bolton Lancashire Thur May 23 2013 Robin 2, Bilston, Wolverhampton. Be seeing you...Pat and co x

The JT Forum wayzgoose* to see Cold Flame is a must for 2013 [A wayzgoose was at one time an entertainment given by a master printer to his workmen each year on or about St Bartholomew's Day (24 August). It marked the traditional end of summer and the start of the season of working by candlelight. Later, the word came to refer to an annual outing and dinner for the staff of a printing works or the printers on a newspaper.]

Hi Forum users,
Hope that some of you at least will take the suggestion made by Graham to come along and have a day out with the band at one of our Tull shows.Sounds like a cunning plan. After all, some of the guys in the band can discuss and wax lyrical about Tull past, present and future probably as much as any user on this site...so looking forward to chats with Forum users this Friday in Darlington.
Best wishes from all the band...P. X
ps...The jury is out on whether Ian's support for Fray Bentos pies has caused the govt to rethink its latest warm pie strategy.
